Until August 31, 1963, North Borneo was granted autonomous status by the British, and changed its name to \"Sabah\" at the same time, but it did not obtain formal independence from the law. Its defense, foreign affairs, finance, internal affairs and other affairs are still in charge by the government of United Kingdom. On September 16, 1963, Sabah, Sarawak, the Malaya Union and Singapore formed a federal state and established Malaysia. Prior to the establishment of Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore were British Autonomous States. According to the founding agreement, Sabah has administrative autonomy to a certain extent, such as the autonomy of immigration policies. Sabah is one of the 13 states of Malaysia and the second largest state in Malaysia, followed by Sarawak in the southwest. The capital city of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, located in the northeastern part of Kalimantan Island. Other major towns include Sandakan, Tawau, Keningau, Beaufort, Kudat, Semporna, Lahad Datu, Tuaran, Papar Siapdan, Tenom, Ranau, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and so on. SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Sabah Beaches The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park is located between 3 and 8 km off Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. It comprises of 5 islands which are Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug. The Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal is the ferry terminal to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, since it is only a short boat ride away from the city. SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Eco Tourism Hiking Danum Valley Conservation Area Danum Valley Conservation Area is an undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest. Being remote from human habitation and almost alien to modern civilization makes the Danum Valley Conservation Area a naturalists’ paradise. It is so untouched and beautiful beyond imagination. The area has been recognized as one of the world’s most complex ecosystem as this forest serves as a natural home for endangered wildlife species such as banteng, Asian elephant, clouded leopard, orang utan, proboscis monkey, as well as a vast range of Sabah’s lowland fauna. The park offers activities such as jungle treks, river swimming, bird watching, night jungle tours and excursions to nearby logging sites and timber mills. Mount Kinabalu (Kota Kinabalu) Mount Kinabalu (Gunung Kinabalu in Malay) is the highest peak in Borneo and the highest peak in Malaysia. Mount Kinabalu derives its name from the Kadazan word, ‘Aki Nabalu’, meaning ‘the revered place of the dead’. The highest point is Low's Peak which is 4,095.2 meters above sea level and it grows at a speed of 0.5 cm per year. Mount Silam (Lahad Datu) SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Mount Silam is one of the highest mountains in Lahad Datu with a height of 884 meters. This protected forest reserve is rich with variety and unique of endemic flora and fauna. It is a perfect place for plants and animal enthusiasts. There are two trails to the summit, the easy but longer Kalung-Kalungan Trail and the shorter but difficult Kayangan Trail. The view at the top is magnificent but it is often windy and cooling up there. If you plan to hike Mount Silam, remember to wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring raincoat, water and food as there is no shelter and water station along way. The entrance is located behind the heaven of Tower (Menara Kayangan). After the trekking journey to Mount Silam, you can also climb up to the tower and reward yourself with the beautiful view of Darvel Bay. Maliau Basin Conservation Area (Sandakan) Maliau Basin also known as the “Sabah’s Lost World” is located around the center of Sabah in the Sandakan Division. It was designated as a conservation area by the Sabah Foundation in 1981. It is an uplifted plateau which has eroded in the middle and giving it a saucer-like shape. Maliau Basin has an astounding forest structure. The tropical rainforest which grows in the basin was not affected by the terrain but changes composition with altituden, which makes Maliau Basin so special. In 1997, Maliau Basin Conservation Area was upgraded by the Sabah state government to a Class 1 Protection Forest Reserve; providing legal status as a protected area. It is one of the few undisturbed primitive wilderness forests on the planet and excellent site for jungle trekking and bird watching. The highlight of the adventure is to trek the majestic seven tiers Maliau Falls. Keen visitors must obtain a permission to enter the Maliau Basin in advance from Yayasan Sabah. Also bear in mind that Maliau Basin is a remote, atavistic and isolated area with limited access, communications and safety facilities. Crocker Range Park located in the west coast of Sabah, is the largest state terrestrial Park comprising an area about twice the size of Singapore. The Park spans across 8 districts and Sabah Parks manages this Park since 1984 to protect its ecosystem of forest. The Park is also an important water catchment area as the sources of 12 major rivers. These rivers supply clean drinking water to the people in west coast and interior of Sabah. 79
SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH In June 2014, Crocker Range Park was recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by the International Coordinating Council for Biosphere Reserve (CRBR), a programme under UNESCO. It is an ideal place for meetings, camping, jungle trekking and outdoor educational activities. Among the attractions to be found in the Crocker Range Park are the Rafflesia sites, trekking courses, birding activity and camping ground. Tawau Hills Park (Tawau) Tawau Hills Park is a 28,000 hectares recreational and national park, located at the east coast of Sabah, about 20 KM away from Tawau town. It is home to numerous plant and animal species, and was gazetted as a park in 1979 to protect water catchment resources for Tawau Town and the Semporna Peninsula. The Tawau River flows through the middle of the park and forms many natural deepwater pools and waterfalls. There are chalets, hostels and restaurants in the park and also aature trails lead to waterfalls and hotsprings. The popular activities are jungle trekking to the Gelas Hill Waterfall, or Sulphur Hot Spring. You can spot wildlife along the way such as clouded leopard, hornbills, pheasants, giant tree squirrel. Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (Kota Kinabalu) Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is made up of two parts; the zoological and the botanical side. The main objective of the park is to become a family-oriented park and the emphasis is put on the Children’s Zoo. Among the many residents of the zoo are the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Sumatran rhinoceros, Orang Utan, Prosboscis monkey, Malayan Tiger as well as a few species of deer. The botanical park side also offers visitors the opportunity to go jungle trekking along the botanical trail; the paved trail is about 1.4 kilometers long. The aviary is a more lively section where you will hear myriads of sounds of the mynahs greeting visitors who come to the park. At the aviary, there are many species of birds like the hornbill, pigeons, parrots, eagles, egrets and many more. Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary (Sandakan) The Lower kinabatangan area is a zoo safari and night safari all rolled into one. The kinabatangan wildlife sanctuary is a great place for variety of animals and flora, some endemic to Borneo and some endemic to the area itself. Tourists will normally make the 80

It is the largest wildlife reserve in Malaysia created in the year 1984 and covered with lowland dipterocarp forest.. It has been declared as a Wildlife Reserve primarily on account of the large number of animals inhabiting its forests, some of which are highly endangered. The sea of Semporna lies inside the Coral Triangle, “The Amazon of the Seas” that covers six countries, and Malaysia (North and East of Sabah) is one of them. This beautiful underwater world makes it a paradise for diving and the most attractive tourist destination. In year 2014 there were about 65,139 tourists who came to dive in Sabah. Tun Sakaran Marine Park (TSMP) Tun Sakaran Marine Park (TSMP) are situated at the entrance to Darvel Bay, off the East coast of Sabah near the town of Semporna. It takes about 45 minutes by speed boat from the jetty of this small town. TSMP consists of 8 islands (Pulau Bodgaya, Boheydulang, Tetagan, Selakan, Sebangkat, Maiga, Sibuan and Mantabuan) and two reefs (Kapikan Reef and Church Reef), is the largest marine park in sabah. These islands are surrounded with reefs and sea. Its also the largest concentration of coral reefs in Malaysia. The park is also home to the mysterious Bajau Laut people who live in lovely little stilt houses that sit above colorful coral reefs and turquoise blue waters. Pom Pom Island Pom Pom Island is one of Semporna’s many dive havens, located 45 minutes by boat from Semporna. The island has a white sand coral beach and is a significant nesting location site for green and hawksbill turtles. It also has 20 sites all reachable by fast boat within approximately 15 to 25 minutes, is an ideal place for all keen divers to explore the marine life including turtles and macro. 82
Mataking Island SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Mataking Island is a romantic island which became an ultimate destination for couples or newlyweds; you can even have your wedding hosted here! It consists of two islands, Mataking Besar and Mataking Kecil; there is a \"sand road\" between these 2 islands where you can walk over during low tide. The whole island is surrounded by house reefs, where you can easily do some fun snorkeling. From May to August, you may be lucky enough to spot Green turtles and Hawksbill turtles laying their eggs on the beaches. Kapalai Island Instead of calling Kapalai an island, it is actually a big sandbar situated on the Lighten Reef, 45-minute trip from Semporna by speedboat. It was called as a Magic Island, as the island will “disappear” during high tide, but due to land erosion, there is a narrow sandy bar only visible during low tide. There are resorts on high wooden stilts in the middle of the ocean connecting with broadways, where you may see marine lives swim underneath. It is a fantastic destination to visit and the best visit time is between April and September. Sipadan Island Sipadan Island is the only oceanic island in Malaysia and was rated as one of the top five dive sites in the world. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. It is a very small island; you can circle the whole island with only 25 minutes walk. Surrounded by crystal clear waters, the underwater world is rich with the most amazing species out there, and green hawksbill turtles are frequently seen in the waters around Sipadan. The best time to visit Sipadan is during the dry season which is from March to October. Mabul Island Mabul Island is located 15 km from Sipadan, 25 minutes from Sipadan by Speedboat. It is a small island off the south-eastern coast of Sabah in Malaysia. This island consists of flat grounds and surrounded by sandy beaches, perched on the northwest corner of a larger area of reefs. Just drop off from the end of the jetty for a dive or snorkeling, you would see variety of macro life such as flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, spike-fin gobies and frogfish. SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Turtle Island Park Turtle Island Park, also known as Pulau Penyu National Park is located at the East Coast of Sabah, 40 km north of Sandakan. It comprises of three islands, the largest Pulau Selingan and two smaller Pulau Bakkungan Kecil and Pulau Gulisan, which are protected within marine parks on both sides of Malaysian and Philippine borders. This makes the islands a safe breeding paradise for the green and hawksbill turtles, which became the most important sea turtle spawning and hatchery in the Southeast Asia. The turtles lay their eggs all year round but July and October is the peak period when the seas are calmer. The Selingan Island is the park's headquarters with visitor’s center, basic tourist facilities and a turtle hatchery. The turtle landings usually take place after dusk and visitors are allowed to watch the turtles landing at night every day. During day time, visitors may spend their time snorkeling, lazing and tanning on the beach at west side of the island. They have clean and quiet beaches and some interesting coral and marine life to offer. Pulau Tiga Park Pulau Tiga Park is located 35km away from Kota Kinabalu, can be reached within a 15 minute ride by speed boat from Kuala Penyu. The park was gazetted as a marine park in 1978, comprises of three islands; Tiga Island, Pulau Kalampunian and Pulau Kalampunian Damit (Snake Island). The park's name is derived from the largest Tiga Island, as there are three undulating humps visible from a distance when approaching the island. Opposite the largely swampy Klias Peninsula, is a group of islands with coral reefs and sandy beaches and a fascinating spot rarely visited by tourists. The islands was a designated forest reserve in 1933, claiming its fame with the first ever ‘secret’ location for the hit reality series, ‘Survivor’. Hence, many refer to Pulau Tiga as Survivor Island. Tun Mustapha Park Tun Mustapha Marine Park is a marine park located off the north coast of Sabah, an area with more than 50 islands and islets, scattered across Kudat, Pitas, Kota Marudu districts in Kudat- Banggi Priority Conservation Area. It is the largest marine protected area and the first multiple-use park in Malaysia. The park has unique biodiversity with multiple diverse habitats, ranging from mangroves, seagrass beds to coral reefs, which has created the best paradise and become the home for elusive dugongs and endangered sea turtles as well as other regular visitors such as the migratory whales. The establishment of Tun Mustapha park will boost the conservation and biodiversity of the rich natural environment and as an inspiration for marine conservation in the Coral Triangle and worldwide. 84
Langkayan Island SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH A tiny jewel-shaped island located on the northeastern coast of Sabah, Langkayan is part of the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA). The island is surrounded by beautiful blue-green waters as well as coral reefs, Langkayan Island also happens to be one of the top diving spots in Sabah. Langkayan Island has a total of 14 diving sites including the Langkayan Wreck. All diving sites are within minutes away from the island offerring a wide range of marine life such as ribbon eels and giant groupers. Between March and May, enormous whale sharks can also be seen lurking around the islands. Layang-Layang Island Known as \"Swallows Reef\", Layang-Layang Island is a man-made island that was initially constructed for the Malaysian Navy. It was then opened to public and developed further as a dive resort which is now known as \"Layang-Layang Island Resort.\" The island is extremely isolated from everywhere else that the only mode of transport to get to the island is by flight from Kota Kinabalu. Being a remote island on its own, Layang-Layang Island has some of the finest reefs, clearest views and sometimes even sightings of pelagic making the island one of the most visited spots for divers. Layang-Layang Island was even featured in the list of 10 best diving destinations in the world! Mantanani Island Mantanani Island is a combination of a group of three isolated islands located northwest of Kota Belud. These islands are approximately an hour's drive from the state capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu. A boat ride by speedboat from Kuala Abai Jetty to the islands will roughly take about 55 minutes. One of its most prominent island, \"Big Mantanani Island\" is a knife-shaped like island that has a beach which stretches up to 2.500 meters. Big Mantanani Island also promises the most diverse marine life with visibilty up to 40 meters. Many species of rays also flutter around its waters. Divers may spot blue-spotted rays and marble sting rays and a wide variety of other species of fish. Mantanani Island is also popular amongst locals due to its breathtaking scenery, serene environment and and cool breezes. Libaran Island One of the smallest islands in Sabah, Libaran Island is the ideal island for those looking for an escape from the fast paced city life. Known well for its overall simplicity, Libaran Island is the definition of \"less is more.\" With its long stretch of beaches, beautiful sunsets and crystal blue waters. But Libaran Island is still a place for those who seek some fun where visitors can enjoy activities such as night fishing or mangrove cruising. Local villagers on the island are also very accommodating and friendly with most of them being fishermen, fishnet-makers and boat makers. Bohey Dulang Island SPECIAL FEATURE : SABAH Bohey Dulang Island is mountainous island formed by remnants of volcanic eruptions. It happens to be the second largest island among the Tun Sakaran Marine Park archipelago. Offering fantastic views from its 353m peak, Bohey Dulang Island is a favorite among trekkers and birdwatchers. Located 23km away from Semporna, the island has a superficy of 313 hectares. During low tide, visitors can even walk around the whole island on its beach. Since the island are part of an extinct volcanic crater, it has formed a beautiful lagoon that extends into a long coral reef seperating Bohey Dulang and Pulau Bodgaya. The island also has a Giant Clam and Marine Invertebrate Hatchery that breeds rare species of giant clams. Dinawan Island Located roughly 25 minutes away from the Marine Sutera Jetty by speedboat, Dinawan Island is a private island located at the south of Kota Kinabalu. If you're looking to splurge on a luxuries getaway perhaps for an anniversary or honeymoon then Dinawan Island is the place for you. With a first class resort built on the island with minimal disturbance, lush tropical rainforest and and crytal clear waters surrounding it. Hence, Dinawan Island is the ideal place if you're looking to relax and unwind with with peaceful atmosphere. From the island you are even able to catch a glimpse of the famous Mount Kinabalu in the background. There are also several activities that visitors can indulge in during their stay at the island such as sea walking, snorkelling, scuba diving and other water sports. Si Amil Island Si Amil is located approximately more than an hour by speedboat from Semporna. Si Amil is also a very unique island as it is the only island with a steep hill covered in rainforest. On the other side of the island however is the home to colorful corals and sea creatures dominating the ocean floor that drops as low as 100 meter deep.
