NATURE : HILLS - BROGA HILL Sightseeing Tours Located in Broga, a unique small town that sits on the border of Selangor and Negeri Broga Hill Sembilan, is Broga Hill which is also known as Bukit Lalang. It is said that the name ‘Broga’ is derived from Buragas, a legendary beast that lived in the jungle. Broga Hill is lush green hills that surround the town of Broga and is part of the Titiwangsa Range, hence making it a famous hiking place for novice hikers and scenic spot for photography. With the height of about 300 m, the hill is so unique that one quarter of its top is covered with only green tall weeds known as ‘lalang’ (in Malay). On top of Broga Hill, you can see massive beautiful grassland with backdrops of mountains a la The Sound of Music scenery. Compared to Bukit Tabur (Klang Gates Quartz Ridge), climbing Broga Hill is much easier and not as dangerous as Bukit Tabur. The only obstacles are passing through a few landslides and crossing a small wooden bridge. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the first peak. There are about three peaks, each offering slightly different views. To reach the highest peak from the first peak, it will take about one hour. Although the whole journey does not take a long time, you may be surprised by the breaktaking views, which give you the feel of being at a quite high area above sea level. 72 Courtesy of Jay Mobilik

NATURE : HILLS - BUKIT PUTIH / GASING HILL Bukit Putih Despite being located in the immediate vicinity of urban areas, Bukit Putih or ‘Ah Pak Sightseeing Tours San’ (in Chinese) has a surprising number of wildlife living there, including birds, squirrels and monkeys. The trails that wind around offer some moderately challenging ascents and descents at some parts. It would simply take up most of the day to traverse all the trails, passing through different ‘stations’ or checkpoints around the hill. The outer edges of the hill are mostly made up of rubber trees but further in, old secondary or primary forest. One of the trails will lead you to a small but scenic waterfall located down below following a steep descent. Along the way, you can spot banded leaf langurs (Presbytis femoralis) perching among treetops. This less common species of primate lives in primary rainforests and can tolerate logged forests and plantations. Locals that live nearby Bukit Putih usually jog around the hill, have picnics and go for a swim at the waterfall on the weekends. They have even, on their own initiative, formed an organisation to preserve and maintain the trails and jungle. Credit should be given for their initiative and effort. As such, hikers from outside have no problem finding their ways while hiking in Bukit Putih as the trails are well-marked with labels and bands to show the correct directions. Gasing Hill Gasing Hill is the only remaining forest reserve found in Petaling Jaya with an area of 36 hectares. There are forest trails, resting areas and a viewing tower for nature lovers. Once a rubber plantation, this secondary jungle has more than 100 species of birds and more than 32 species of plants, ranging from tropical timber to wild flowers and ferns. Long tail macaques can also be found in this green lung. There are many trails that are suitable for jogging and trekking. On top of that, the conditions of the series of little hills found here resemble the one found in our tropical jungles. Although the short stretches may not have the length or height as the real hills, you need not travel far and spend too much of time to experience the real fun of mountain trekking. This is the secret of Gasing Hill’s popularity among those who know and love jungle trekking. 73
