The minaret is 45.6m and inside the tower contains an inscription carved on cornice which marks the year the minaret was built, 1127 along with the name of architect – Bako. At one point of time, there was a story of a Shah who wanted to kill his wife. He ordered her execution by pushing her down the tower. Fortunately, as she supposedly fell to her death, her dress parachuted her gently to the ground. 83 kztg2.indd 83 1/13/2016 10:32:24 AM

Historic Site Ensemble of Khoja-Gaukushon One of the largest architectural ensemble including a mosque, a minaret and a madrassah, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It got its name due to the slaughter HIGHLIGHT of bulls’. house which was once in this site. ‘Gaukushon’ is translated as ‘killing The initiator of the Khoja was Djuybarsk Sheikh Khoja Sayyid reflecting the name of the mosque and the ensemble in whole. Location: Gaukshon Street, Bukhara Nodir Divan-begi Madrassah On the west side of Lyabi-hauz is another architectural monument, the Nodir Divan-begi Khanaka built in 1619. It is a multi-cell building with a central cupola hall, with unique niches on every corner of the building side. There are ample khudjras in the building. In the past, it was built as a caravanserai, housing traditional craft shops and jewellery. In the evening, it became a concert site with traditional music and beautiful ladies performing folk dances and singing melodious traditional songs. However, during the opening, Imamkuli-khan (1611- 1642) advised his minister on construction of the building “for the glory of Allah” by advice of Sufi sheikhs. So, Nadir Divan-Begi had to convert it into a madrassah. 84 kztg2.indd 84 1/13/2016 10:32:28 AM

Several Kokand mosques, madrassahs and caravanserais built were connected to her name. One of which is the Dakhma-i-Shakhan burial complex where Umarkhan was interred. It was a composite architectural ensemble which was typical for memorial complexes of the erghana Valley and was called khazira. The gravestones of Umarkhan, his brothers, sons and grandsons are richly decorated with carving, intricate ornaments and quotations from Koran made in Arabic characters. 90 kztg2.indd 90 1/13/2016 10:32:39 AM

Historic Sites The architectural complex included a domed construction with a portal, a commemoration mosque, and a fenced courtyard where gravestone were placed. However, since the construction of the mausoleum two centuries ago, only a splendid entrance pavilion survives. Two facetted towers flanking the façade immediately bring to mind the images of the HIGHLIGHT Bibi-khanym mosque in Samarkand as if alluding to the fact that both buildings were dedicated to great women. To the right, on one of the hexahedral tiles, the architect left the date the mausoleum was constructed – Hijra year of 1241 (1825). A legend says that kulol- ceramists from Rishtan, as well as local ganch fretwork craftsmen took part in decoration of the Modari-khan Mausoleum. The most noteworthy in the décor of the mausoleum is Modari-Khan Mausoleum an amazing decoration of the inner vault. Elsewhere, the Bolalar Bogi (Children’s Garden) is a new fairground at the crossroads of Fitrat and Sharaf Rashidov. Chakar Mosque Islam has the tradition of replacing old timeworn cult structures with new ones of the same purpose. To construct a civil building on the site of a cult, one was considered blameworthy and sacrilegious. Thus, by tradition, in the early 20th century the new mosque Chakar replaced the old dilapidated Marghilan’s mosque. It says that the mosque was built in 1911 (1329 of Hegira) and shows the names of the builders of the mosque, Usto Tukhtabek and Mir-Bobo Hajji of Hojent. The exquisite interior decoration of the building, especially the paintings of the plafonds, is a remarkable example of extraordinary skills of the erghana Valley craftsmen and makes Chakar Mosque a popular tourist attraction. 92 kztg2.indd 92 1/13/2016 10:32:43 AM

Historic Sites HIGHLIGHT Rishtan Ceramic Centre As far back as the beginning of the Common Era, caravan tracks connected this little town with the Great Silk Road arteries which ran through the ancient erghana Valley towns Kuva and Akhsykent. At the end of the 14th century, Rishtan masters began making semi-faience from the local clays-– silicate kashina pottery. Covered with white glaze with patterns painted in light blue and turquoise, this pottery was called chini (‘Chinese’). In the 19th century Rishtan masters would still make chini ceramics, which was in great demand. According to ancient beliefs, blue, the colour of water and sky symbolized happiness. The main secret of Rishtan masters is the very complicated and laborious process of making the potash ishkor glaze made from the ash of the herbs kirk bugin and choroynak which grow in the environs of the town. In 1900 Rishtan ceramics were among the exhibits at the World’s Fair in Paris where connoisseurs compared them to the best examples of European majolica. Some of Rishtan ceramics of those times enriched museum collections in many countries. Presently, there work in Rishtan about 50 master ceramists. Each of them has a shop where he works and sells his products. Mukimiy Museum The Mukimiy Museum is located in the madrassah of Mien Khazrat, an architectural monument erected in respect of Mien Akhad hailing from Peshavar (Pakistan). He is famous for his knowledge in theology and has been called to serve in the palace of the Kokand’s Khan. The madrassah’s main entrance has a domed darvozahona with carved gate whereas the southern part of the courtyard there is the multicolumned mosque and small minaret. The eastern and western courtyards are surrounded with khudjras (student rooms). The outstanding poet Aminkhudja Mukimiy lived and taught in this madrassah for many years. The museum exposition consists of three parts: Mukimiy’s khudjra, works of Mukimiy and the literature environment of Kokand in the second half of I century. 93 kztg2.indd 93 1/13/2016 10:32:44 AM

Historic Sites HIGHLIGHT Juma Mosque In the capital of the Kokand khanate, there were 230 neighbourhood mosques and 18 Friday mosques. The construction of Jami Mosque, the biggest in the city, was completed in 1818 but its erection was initiated long before – in the 18 th century when the ruler of Kokand, Alim- khan commissioned to construct the Jami complex – a madrassah to accommodate 100 hujras (cells for students) and a magnificent mosque. Only in 1817 by order of Umar-khan the erection of the mosque was resumed. Before the first brick was laid, Umar-khan addressed the audience three times with a question: “Is there among you a person who has never sinned?” But there was silence in response, and regarding himself a sinless person, he personally laid the first brick into the wall of the mosque, whereupon he got a nickname ‘Jannat makon’ – “worthy of paradise, God’s minion”. This is due to the fact that tradition dictates that this operation should be entrusted to a virtuous and godly man. This main Friday mosque of Kokand is a khanaka – winter premises on three sides surrounded with avian. The vault of avian is supported by 98 columns made of hard karagach wood, sometimes called ‘stone wood’. Ten similar columns are placed inside the khanaka. All of them decorated with gorgeous fretwork, are crowned with stalactite heads and are set on marble bases. In 1852, under Khudoyar-khan, a 22-metre-high minaret made of baked bricks with winding stairs in the minaret was constructed next to the mosque. The minaret’s form resembles a truncated cone with a hexahedral lantern on the top. Five times a day, azanchi (muezzin) would climb these steps to the top of the minaret to call upon the faithful for praying. Five years later after the minaret was constructed Khudoyar-khan invited the best craftsmen and painters to restore the Friday mosque. In order to finance the works, he ordered to use the two-year profit from vakf – the area intended for maintenance of the mosque and madrassah. Only in 1982, the mosque was thoroughly restored. The deteriorating bases of wooden columns were replaced and the unique paintings of aivan and interior were restored to their initial appearance. Today, the mosque is given back to the religious people and every Friday the citizens come here to pray, just as in the olden days. Historic Sites HIGHLIGHT Narbuta-bey Madrassah According to eyewitness accounts in the 19 th century, there were once up to 40 madrassahs in Kokand. Unfortunately, only a few survived to the present day with the city’s largest being the Narbuta-bey Madrassah, built under Khan Narbuta in 1796 and completed in 1799. Kokand-khan defeated the ruler of Bukhara and took many captives including craftsmen from Bukhara such as architect Mukhammad Salikh Usto Kasim. The craftsmen were then forced to take part in the construction of the madrassah. The most remarkable thing about the Narbuta- bey Madrassah is that it has practically no décor which gives the construction an unforgettable impression of austerity of its architecture. Presently, the Narbuta-bey Madrassah again functions as a religious institution where 80 students from all over the erghana Valley study Koran, hadiths and the Arabic language. 95 kztg2.indd 95 1/13/2016 10:32:45 AM

Historic Sites HIGHLIGHT Jami Complex, Andijan Currently consisting of a madrassah, a mosque and a minaret, the 2000 year-old historical city of 1.5 hectares managed to survive the destruction resulting from natural disasters. A remarkable example of decorative and applied art of the erghana Valley is a highly artistic fretwork on the entrance door of the madrassah which features a deep three-planed vegetal design bordered with geometrical patterns. Presently, the building has been restored and houses the exposition of literature and art of Andijan Regional Museum of History. 96 kztg2.indd 96 1/13/2016 10:32:46 AM

Historic Sites At the turn of the 19 or 20 centuries in the th th western part of Jami complex, there was a Friday mosque erected with huge dimensions- an example would be the main façade which had twenty-six arch openings. So far, the Andijan Jami Mosque has been considered the largest mosque in the erghana Valley. Even the minaret is the highest in the Ferghana HIGHLIGHT Valley with a height of 32 metres dominating the surrounding construction. The Friday Jami mosque has recently opened its door for Muslim believers of Andijan. 97 kztg2.indd 97 1/13/2016 10:32:46 AM
