Beyond Klang Introduction - Beyond Klang Valley Valley Beyond Klang Valley, there are destinations we may visit in one and a half hours that include oceans, mountains, gorgeous jungles, and tiny villages. Genting Highlands, Bentong, Fraser, Janda Baik, and Temerloh are the major conurba- tions in the Greater Klang Valley. These are the areas best recognised for their chilly weather, large theme parks, nature, and beaches, as well as delectable cuisinesw. There are numerous sites to explore and cafes to try a variety of meals, from the coast to nature. Each restaurant has its unique specialties that you won’t find anywhere else. Each area has its own distinct culture and customs; for example, in Genting Highlands, there are large theme parks, Sky Casino, Awana Skyway, and so on. Temerloh, which is located in Pahang, is little recognised.Temerloh is a well-developed and well-organised town. It is located in Central Pahang and serves as the meeting place for Peninsula Malaysia’s East and West Coasts. Because of the quantity of patin (silver catfish) in this town beside the Pahang River, it is also known as ‘Bandar Ikan Patin’ (patin town). These are the lovely sites located beyond Klang Valley and are a must-see for both tourists and Malaysians. 103
Genting Highlands - Beyond Klang Valley Genting HighlandS Genting Highlands is an integrated resort complex in Pahang that includes hotels, casinos, shopping malls, and the newest Skyworlds Theme Park, which is perched on the 1,800-meter- high Gunung Ulu Kali mountain. Genting is located near the boundary of Selangor, about 35 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, and is accessible by motorways, roads, and the Awana Skyway cable car. On a clear day, the peak overlooks beautiful valleys of rainforest stretching towards KL, provid- ing visitors with a breathtaking vista as they enjoy the cooling weather and tranquil mountain surroundings. Many tourist attractions in the surrounding valley are also located around Gent- ing, including rustic towns, culinary hotspots, homestay retreats, wildlife sites, and more. Getting There The drive to the peak takes around an hour and covers roughly 35 kilometres. The seeming slowness is due to the curvy and steep mountain route that begins at the base of Genting Highlands. The Karak Highway has a toll, however there is free access via the trunk route from Batang Kali/Ulu Yam (from Rawang) or Gombak (old Bentong road). Every day, buses travel to Genting Highlands from several locations in and around Kuala Lumpur, either directly to Mushroom Farm Terminal (summit) or Awana SkyCentral (Gohtong Jaya). Departures from KL are available throughout the day and night, with ticket rates rang- ing from MYR5 to MYR12 depending on location. Genting Express is the official bus service to Awana SkyCentral, offering services from KL Sentral, Pudu Sentral (Puduraya), Terminal Putra LRT Gombak, Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), and One Utama Shopping Center in Petaling Jaya. There are also express buses from Singapore and other Malaysian states (check local listings). 104

Temerloh - Beyond Klang Valley TEMERLOH Temerloh is a well-developed and well-organized town. It is located in Central Pahang and serves as the meeting place for Peninsula Malaysia’s East and West Coasts because of the quantity of patin (silver catfish) in this town beside the Pahang River, it is also known as ‘Bandar Ikan Patin’ (patin town). According to Malay tradition, Temerloh was not only Batin Seridun’s final destination, but also the seat from which he dominated the area between Senyum Mountain to the west and Gebuk Hill to the east. Since its creation on July 1, 1889, Batin Seridun has chosen Temerloh as the name of one of the districts in the state of Pahang. Getting There Temerloh is easily accessible by car because it is well connected to other cities. Temerloh is connected to Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur, and other small towns in Pahang via the East Coast Expressway. This motorway will soon connect Kuala Lumpur with Terengganu. Alternatively, a historic trunk road connects Temerloh to other Pahang minor towns such as Jengka, Jeran- tut, Karak, and Maran. There are two bus terminals in Termerloh. Longer-distance services (for example, to Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan) depart from the intercity terminal, which is located directly off Jalan Ahmad Shah. Local buses depart from the bus terminal across from the market, for example, to Jerantut for Taman Negara or Kuala Gandah for the Elephant Sanctuary. Buses run every hour from 07:00 to 17:00 from Kuala Lumpur’s Pekeliling Bus Terminal, arriving at Temerloh Intercity Terminal around 2.5 hours later. Return travels follow a similar pattern. Water transport serves the residents of Sungai Semantan and Sungai Pahang. TemerlohTown and Kuala Krau both have a jetty for passengers to embark and depart. 120

A fascinating tidbit is that the Pahang state Tourism Minister also lives in this town! Isn’t it amazing? A kampung experience is a distant dream for many city people, with little chance of ever being realised. Not to worry! There is now an excellent ap- proach to live the simple life. 1 Make a Visit to Krau Wildlife Reserve Temerloh It was created in 1923 and is Malaysia’s largest wildlife reserve, covering an area of 55,159 hectares. After being gazetted again in 1965 and 1968, the area is now 62,395 hectars. It is situated near Benom Mountain in Temerloh District, Pahang, and is drained by the Krau, Lompat, and Teris rivers. The reserve’s elevation ranges from 43 metres at Kuala Lompat to 2,107 metres at the peak of Benom Mountain. The main goal of the reserve is to safeguard animals, particularly Gaur, which can be found in huge populations in places previously inhabited by aborigenes. Gaur can be seen in large numbers in the Krau River valley and in salt licks to the east and south of the reserve. Kuala Lompat has a well-known research site for study- ing monkeys, bats, and birds. The Institute of Biodiversity and the National Elephant Conservation Centre are located in the reserve’s southern section, accessible via Lanchang. Jenderak Selatan Wildlife Conservation Centre is located on the reserve’s eastern boundary with Felda Jenderak Selatan. 2 Interact with deers in Malaysia’s version of Nara Deer Park. This following site undoubtedly gives Japan’s famous Nara Park a run for its money. Since its inception in 1996, Deerland Park has served as a one-stop shop for animal and wildlife enthusiasts. Mr Abdullah, who has cared for these crea- tures for the most of their lives, owns and runs the park. The name of the park may be deceptive, as it has numerous smaller species in addition to deer. You can expect to see a wide variety of reptiles, including snakes, frogs, and exotic lizards. Guests will also be greeted by raccoons, prairie dogs, ostriches, peacocks, exotic chickens, hedgehogs, and exotic felines! 121
