8 | ABOUT KLANG VALLEY Klang Valley – An Introduction lang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, which is associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining Ktowns in the late 19th century. Situated in the centre of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling and Klang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineated by Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca to the west. Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartland of Malaysia’s industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home to a great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers from Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing region in the country with many more rapidly growing new towns and yet more is believed to develop in the near future. Development of the region took place mainly in the East-West direction (between Gombak and Port Klang) but the urban areas surrounding Kuala Lumpur have since grown south towards the border with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang. Now, with the emergence of Klang Valley 2 Region, covering two areas in the south of Selangor—the districts of Sepang and Kuala Langat, this new region will generate economic development, strengthen the intra and inter-regional economic network and distribute its benefi ts to the surrounding areas. These districts have been directly aff ected by the implementation of mega projects, such as Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and the Federal Administration Centre in Putrajaya, hence becoming the new areas for the expansion of the present Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Region, Klang Valley. Sepang District, shaped like the stem of a ‘keris’ as seen from the air, is the youngest district for the state of Selangor. It borders the districts of Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Petaling, as well as Bandar Baru Nilai in Negeri Sembilan. The road network in Sepang comprises the Elite Highway on the west, the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway on the east, and the B20 Highway in between, as well as the Express Rail Link and new roads such as the South Klang Valley Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya-Cyberjaya Highway, Putrajaya Urban Motorway and the new B15 Highway. The district of Kuala Langat has become a strategic investment area following the intense development of Putrajaya and KLIA, and good road network linking it to Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Port Klang, Putrajaya and KLIA. Kuala Langat is located in the south-western part of Selangor and bordered by the districts of Klang to the north and Sepang to the east.

10 || SIGHTSEEING TOURS Special Focus: Takun Hill Takun Hill Takun Hill, or also known as Bukit Takun in Malay, is perhaps the only place where you will fi nd pinnacles in Peninsular Malaysia, without having to go to Mulu Caves in Sarawak. It is located about 20 km from Kuala Lumpur and is most conveniently accessible by car from Jalan Kuching, passing Selayang before reaching the jungle area. Alternatively, you can also take a train to Rawang and from Rawang Komuter Station, take a taxi to Perangsang Templer Golf Club in Templer Park where Takun Hill stands next to the golf club. Once you reach there, you may encounter the problem of getting to the base of the hill as you need to go through the security gate. As this is a closed gated area, there are possibilities where you might be stopped from entering the area to proceed to the base. It all depends on the mood of the guard on duty whether they allow you to use the route. Or, you may try to convince them to let you through by leaving your driving licence or by registering yourself. This 300-metre monolith, sitting atop a forested hill with granite forming the base and limestone higher up, is a popular rock climbing site in Selangor. The hill off ers about thirty climbing routes.
SIGHTSEEING TOURS || 11 Special Focus: Takun Hill To view the razor-sharp, 30-metre high limestone pinnacles, you have to climb a w the razor sharp 30 metre high limestone pinnacles you have to climb vertical wall and trek on top of a limestone hill. The easterly facing face has sheer and fl at cliff s while the westerly facing face has more gradual slopes, with more trees and sharp pinnacle-like edges like the ones found in Mulu Caves. There is a number of climbing opportunities en route to the top. You have to rely on your climbing gear and your skills in order to reach the hilltop. Scaling the hill is relatively easy at the beginning but is getting harder and more dangerous in some higher areas as you need to set up a rappel for safety purpose and it should only be done with experienced guides and special equipment. The rocks are sharp and pointed and a fall on them will cause deep cuts. Other than that, you need to endure continuous mosquito bites and uninvited leeches sucking your blood. Long trousers and sleeved shirt are good enough, at least until the base of Takun Hill. Some overgrown paths cause the trail to become not obvious. Thus, you should look for white arrows that are painted on the rock which show you the direction to go. You should take note that the trekking route down the side of the hill does not lead back to the ‘granite-based’ route where you would most likely have started.
12 || SIGHTSEEING TOURS Nature: Hills – Klang Gates Quartz Ridge Klang Gates Quartz Ridge Klang Gates Quartz Ridge, also known as Bukit Tabur, or locally known as Bukit Melawati for being located in Taman Melawati residential area, is one of Malaysia’s most precious natural monuments built almost entirely of quartz, measuring 16 kilometres long and 200 metres wide. This crystal quartz outcrop is noticeable en route from Zoo Negara to Karak Highway using the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). Many may be mistaken by the many greyish outcrops that look like limestone rocks, which in fact is quartz. There are many reasons why geologists and biologists marvel at it. No other quartz outcrops in the country and perhaps even the world can match its massive length and breadth. This botanical treasure nurtures some 265 plant species, including small coniferous-like trees, shrubs, creepers, orchids and moss. Besides plants, the ridge is also home to various types of mammals (including the rare mountain serow), birds, insects and other wildlife. Scaling the Klang Gates Ridge can be tricky and dangerous especially for the beginners. There are vertical drops, steep slopes, dangerous cliff s and challenging terrains you have to overcome. The whole journey which
SIGHTSEEING TOURS || 13 Nature: Hills – Klang Gates Quartz Ridge takes three hours needs you to clamber on a narrow, rocky path that undulates over exposed craggy patches, scrub vegetation and some green mossy plateaus. However, all your hard work will be rewarded throughout the journey. Along the way, you get an astonishing vista of the Klang Gates Dam and surrounding mountains, as well as the blue-roofed International Islamic University Malaysia in Gombak and Genting Highlands on the far end. The best part of the hike awaiting you is the panoramic views of the Kuala Lumpur city atop the ridge. There are many reasons why the Klang Gates Ridge deserves to be declared a World Heritage Site. Besides its rich biological diversity of fl ora and fauna, including the presence of a rare animal, the serow, it is built almost entirely of quartz and stretches for over 16 kilometres, making it very unique. Another reason why it is unique is that it displays four types of quartz formation. Much of it is opaque white or tainted with grey, and lined with minute needles of clear hexagonal quartz crystals in some places. Now, urban development and deforestation pose a major threat to the Klang Gates Ridge, especially the foothills at the ridge due to the city’s growing population and rising demand for land. Presently, its inaccessibility is ensuring its continued existence. That is why conservationists and scientists have every reason to fear for the future of the Klang Gates Ridge if it is not porperly managed to avoid further deterioration. In fact, the ridge should be gazetted as a wildlife reserve as it is home to a rare animal, the serow. According to the survey carried out by National Parks and Wildlife Department in 1985, the tracks of fi ve serows were found, but no one will know how many exist today.
14 || SIGHTSEEING TOURS Nature: Hills – Broga Hill Courtesy of Jay Mobilik Broga Hill Located in Broga, a unique small town that sits on the border of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, is Broga Hill which is also known as Bukit Lalang. It is said that the name ‘Broga’ is derived from Buragas, a legendary beast that lived in the jungle. Broga Hill is lush green hills that surround the town of Broga and is part of the Titiwangsa Range, hence making it a famous hiking place for novice hikers and scenic spot for photography. With the height of about 300 m, the hill is so unique that one quarter of its top is covered with only green tall weeds known as ‘lalang’ (in Malay). On top of Broga Hill, you can see massive beautiful grassland with backdrops of mountains a la The Sound of Music scenery. Compared to Bukit Tabur (Klang Gates Quartz Ridge), climbing Broga Hill is much easier and not as dangerous as Bukit Tabur. The only obstacles are passing through a few landslides and crossing a small wooden bridge. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the fi rst peak. There are about three peaks, each off ering slightly diff erent views. To reach the highest peak from the fi rst peak, it will take about one hour. Although the whole journey does not take a long time, you may be surprised by the breaktaking views, which give you the feel of being at a quite high area above sea level.
SIGHTSEEING TOURS || 15 Nature: Hills – Bukit Putih / Gasing Hill Bukit Putih Despite being located in the immediate vicinity of urban areas, Bukit Putih or ‘Ah Pak San’ (in Chinese) has a surprising number of wildlife living there, including birds, squirrels and monkeys. The trails that wind around off er some moderately challenging ascents and descents at some parts. It would simply take up most of the day to traverse all the trails, passing through diff erent ‘stations’ or checkpoints around the hill. The outer edges of the hill are mostly made up of rubber trees but further in, old secondary or primary forest. One of the trails will lead you to a small but scenic waterfall located down below following a steep descent. Along the way, you can spot banded leaf langurs (Presbytis femoralis) perching among treetops. This less common species of primate lives in primary rainforests and can tolerate logged forests and plantations. Locals that live nearby Bukit Putih usually jog around the hill, have picnics and go for a swim at the waterfall on the weekends. They have even, on their own initiative, formed an organisation to preserve and maintain the trails and jungle. Credit should be given for their initiative and eff ort. As such, hikers from outside have no problem fi nding their ways while hiking in Bukit Putih as the trails are well-marked with labels and bands to show the correct directions. Gasing Hill Gasing Hill is the only remaining forest reserve found in Petaling Jaya with an area of 36 hectares. There are forest trails, resting areas and a viewing tower for nature lovers. Once a rubber plantation, this secondary jungle has more than 100 species of birds and more than 32 species of plants, ranging from tropical timber to wild fl owers and ferns. Long tail macaques can also be found in this green lung. There are many trails that are suitable for jogging and trekking. On top of that, the conditions of the series of little hills found here resemble the one found in our tropical jungles. Although the short stretches may not have the length or height as the real hills, you need not travel far and spend too much of time to experience the real fun of mountain trekking. This is the secret of Gasing Hill’s popularity among those who know and love jungle trekking.
