Transport Introduction Malaysia has well developed transport networks and efficient rail links. Its international ports and airports are well connected to bus and train services, making travel to, from and around the country easy and efficient. Transportation in larger cities is good with many different means of transport. In Klang Valley, for example, there are buses, minibuses (bas-mini), taxis, pedicabs (trishaws), as well as trains. In Malaysian towns and cities various modes of transport are used, including ferry services. In cities the rail network is a good way to get around, especially the KL Monorail and transit trains.106

Hotel Listings TransportMotoring around KLThough KL’s extensive public transportation system can get you tomost places around the city, there are some places it can’t (short of along taxi ride). And if you want to spend a day at a nearby attractionsuch as the Melaka or the Genting Highlands, you might considerrenting a car.Renting a car in KL is quite easy, with many companies competingfor your business. However, some are better than others in terms ofservice, road assistance, selection of cars, etc. You’ll find contactinformation for some reputable car rental services in the upcomingpage. You will most likely need three things to rent a car in KL- a valid driver’slicense, credit card and your passport(if tourist). Some business preferyou hold an International Drivers License, though most are okay witha valid driver’s license from your home country. When you fill out theapplication form, you’ll most likely be asked to put down a securitydeposit. Remember to bring your passport, as they’ll likely want tomake a photocopy. Motoring Some basic rules of the road in Malaysia: UK system of driving; drive on the left side of the road. Don’t worry too much if you aren’t accustomed to these rules- most people adapt very quickly. Drivers are not permited to turn left at an intersection on a red light. Be very mindful of motorcyclists. There are many, and will weave between the straddle lanes of traffic. Some motorcyclists assume they have the right-of-way in all situations, so defensive driving is a must, especially in KL and other urban areas Driving while using a handphone without the aid of a ‘hands-free’ set is strictly illegal.112
Travel SmartChecklist 1st before To-Go!Tens of thousands of tourists and localians travel inbound and abroad. For most this is an incident-free experience but the best laid plans can beupset by a number of problems. Some are impossible to foresee or avoid so,by planning ahead and arming yourself with the right information, you canreduce the risks you might encounter overseas. Here are some tips beforeyour-GO!Getting started• Check that your passport are valid (your family’s too). The process of applying for a visa may take several months and some countries require at least six months of passport validity to issue a visa, so be careful.• Find out if you and/or family members need a visa and make the application as soon as possible if you do.Getting ready to go• Buy your tickets and make any necessary reservations for your trip.• Check if you need an international driving license (remember that it is valid for only one year and it cannot be renewed, you must apply for it again).• Make sure you and your pet have all the vaccines required to travel abroad. It may be required that your pet goes into quarantine.• Arrange your travel insurance and your health insurance abroad (do not forget all other family members).• Check whether your contributions towards your pension are recognized in the country you are moving to.• Make sure that you and your family get medical and dental examinations, take a copy of the results. Also take documents that prove and describe your insurance cover.• If you are renting a house, tell your landlord. Under many contracts you are required give notice several months in advance.• Sell anything that you are not taking with you (cars, furniture, property, etc.). Otherwise you can ask friends to take care of it or put it in a deposit.• If you are leaving for a long period, perhaps you should give “powers of attorney” over your financial affairs to someone while you are absent. 113

Malaysian Etiquette It may come as a surprise when a hotel staff greets you by putting a flat palm over their chest as this is the official way, commonly practiced in the hospitality industry. While the Western handshake is still commonly used in business among member of the same sex, kissing a Malaysian lady on the cheek when you have been introduced is not widely accepted. In a fact, a conservative member of the opposite sex may not even offer her hands and may simply just smile and nod in accordance. Thus you should only extend your hand only when she offers hers. Generally speaking, both sexes of Malaysians are friendly however the women tend to be more modestly dressed than their Western counterparts. Hence it is advisable to be dressed modestly at all times, particularly when going to government departments. For women, it means long sleeves and below the knee dresses. In restaurants and stores, avoid touching sales assistants and waiters to get their attention. Also do not wriggle the forefinger to beckon anyone. When pointing at something, use the thumb resting on a clenched fist and when it comes to giving or receiving objects, always use the right hand. Besides that, avoid touching people on the head as it is considered a sacred part of the body in Eastern culture. Remember to always remove your shoes when entering a place of worship be it a mosque or temple. The touching of sacred objects like the Holy Koran, images of deities or Holy Scriptures is strictly forbidden. If you are invited to a Malaysian home, again remove your shoes and often you will be offered a drink which is considered polite to take a sip from even if you are not thirsty. Lastly when it comes to the various religions found here, there are certain facts to note on such Muslims do not consume pork and alcohol while Indians who are Hindus do not consume beef as the cow is a sacred animal. There are also many Chinese who are non-beef eaters.128
