Malaysian Games & Pastime MALAYSIAN FRUITS Malaysian fruits Malaysia is a fruit-enthusiasts’ paradise. The tropical climate creates a luxuriant plant life and produces a wide and remarkable diversity of edible and succulent fruit. Located on the Malaysian Peninsula and part of the island of Borneo, Malaysia is blessed with a vibrant tropical climate where perennial heat and abundant rainfall permit a wide variety of delicious fruit to flourish. Malaysia is a home to indigenous tropical fruits, such as durian, mangosteen, cempedak, pomelo, rambutan, duku-langsat and snakefruit. While papaya, guava, ciku, soursop, mango, jackfruit, starfruit, and watermelon, were introduced over the years. Some Malaysian fruits are seasonal while others are easily available throughout the year. Seasonal fruits such as durians, mangosteens, rambutans, mangoes, langsat, and pomelo, are generally available between June and August and between November and February. The non- seasonal fruits are papaya, guava, banana, and pineapple. Tropical Fruits Are Nutritious Tropical fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, acids, fats, and fiber. They are very popular among the local people as they are not as expensive as imported fruits like apples, avocado, kiwi-fruit, and grapes. Fruits are eaten at any time of the day in Malaysia and the durian is often eaten with glutinous or plain rice in a very delicious and satisfying dish. Durian: The King of Fruit The durian is the most popular local fruit in Malaysia. It is fondly regarded as the “King of Fruit.” A durian is about the size of a football, with a thick and fibrous husk covered by sharp spines. The flesh or pulp is creamy, white, yellow, or golden yellow and has a strong 118

Durian season: June to August Mangosteen: The Queen of Fruit Commonly referred to as the “Queen of Fruit,” the mangosteen is often eaten after a hearty meal of durians. This delicate, globular fruit has a leathery, purplish-brown skin that encloses four snowy- white segments of edible flesh. Mangos teens have a sweet, pleasant taste and are rich in Vitamin C and essential minerals. Mangosteen season: June to August Cempedak An exquisite native Malaysian fruit and cousin to the Jackfruit, the cempedak is a favorite fruit in Malaysia. The cempedak exudes a distinctly strong smell when ripe. The MALAYSIAN FRUITS waxy, golden-yellow flesh is custard-like, juicy, and sweet and has a pleasant smell. It can be eaten fresh, deep-fried in oil, or processed into a refreshing juice. The seeds are edible when roasted or boiled in salty water and have a nutty flavor. Cempedak season: May to July Rambutan A very popular native fruit and a cousin to the Chinese lychee, the rambutan is named because of its hairy skin. The yellow or red rambutan is rich in vitamin C and essential minerals. The translucent flesh is soft, sweet and juicy. The rambutan is best eaten as a refreshing treat in the hot, humid weather of Malaysia. Rambutan season: June to August Papaya The papaya is popular for its sweet and succulent thick flesh, in a yellowish or pinkish-orange color. Papaya is packed with enzymes for digestion, as it is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A and calcium. The golden flesh around the seed is succulent and has a very distinctive taste. Often compared to honey, the taste of jackfruit is very sweet. The seed is edible when boiled or roasted and is very nutritious. Unripe fruit serves as a vegetable in many local dishes. The ripe fruit often ends up in soups, ice creams, and fruit salad. Jackfruit season: available all year round Duku Langsat The duku langsat is native to Malaysia. Usually eaten fresh, the fruit’s flesh is translucent and has a delicate and sweet flavour. Other than edible fruit, the duku langsat tree also has numerous medicinal values. The powdered seeds are used for ulcer treatment, whereas the bark is used for scorpion stings treatment and malaria, while the skin can be dried and burned as mosquito repellent incense. TRAVEL TIPS Travel Tips Kuala Lumpur is a magical place filled with huge skyscrapers and beautiful buildings, a thriving arts and culture scenes. It is a feast for the senses and a wonderland of sights, smells, flavors and experiences just waiting to be unearthed. With its warm weather, Kuala Lumpur is a great destination pretty much all year- round. You’re dealing with a hot and wet climate in Malaysia, so make sure that your clothing can stand up to the weather. Be prepared to get hot and sweaty if you’re walking around and always be prepared for a sudden storm (don’t worry, they don’t usually last all day, it’s more of a sudden, crazy storm followed by fine weather). When you decide what to pack for your trip, keep these tips in mind. Clothing – The heat and humidity in Kuala Lumpur can be really intense, so it’s important for you to pack lots of light and breathable clothing that will help you stay cool. Cotton is an excellent choice, as are fabrics designed to wick away moisture. There’s a significant Muslim community in Malaysia so please dress and behave in a culturally respectful way. It’s just part of being a good human and culturally respectful traveler Comfortable footwear – You’ll most likely be doing a LOT of walking so it’s important you wear sensible shoes that are very comfortable. We recommend packing a pair of sneakers or converse-style shoes as well as flats and sandals. Swimwear – Be sure to put your swimwear in your suitcase so you can take full of advantage of your hotel pool if you have one. Don’t forget to pack aqua-ear medicine, goggles; swimming cap or whatever else it is you usually like to swim with. Sunscreen – You want to bring back memories from your trip, not sunburn. Keep sunscreen on hand at all times and make sure to apply it frequently. Usually swear and water can wash away this product, so the next time you’re thinking to spend a lot of time outside keep on applying whenever you think it’s needed. Rain gear – It get can rainy in KL and you don’t want that to get in the way of your plans. Be sure to pack a raincoat, a travel sized umbrella or other waterproof gear so you’re prepared for any sort of condition during your trip or you’ll be very cold if your clothes get wet. Medicine bag – Pack a small medicine bag with all your prescription medicines and essentials, just in case you become ill late at night or can’t find a pharmacy. Power adaptors – In Malaysia, power sockets are G Type, which is the boxy one with three thick, rectangular prongs. Be sure to pack an adaptor so you can charge all your electronics. Pack light – Finally, be sure to pack light! If you love shopping, KL is a bit of a shopper’s wonderland and you’re going to need room in your suitcase for all those new purchases!
