Congkak (Congklak) is a Malaysian C U LT U R E mancala game of Malay origin. The Congkak word congkak is thought to have derived from the old Malay word ‘congak,’ which means mental calculation, which was performed in this game. Every time a player moves, they deposit a shell into his 'storehouse' but do not deposit any into his opponent's 'storehouse.' How the game continues, depends on where the last shell of each scoop is deposited.The first round ends when a player's side is depleted of shells. In the second round, players re-distribute shells from their own 'storehouse' to their own 'rooms.' Each 'home' has seven shells put in it from left to right. If a player does not have enough shells to fill his own 'houses,' the remaining cups remain empty and are deemed 'burned.' The remaining shells are stored in his personal 'storehouse.' Excess shells won by the opponent are deposited in his own 'storehouse.' The loser begins the second round. Play continues as before, but players can avoid 'burned buildings,' for example, no shells should be dropped into these houses. Completed in 2016, this colourful construction is actually a large tunnel possessing a length of 115 meter and is considered to be the largest dragon tunnel in the world. The dragon is snaked around a beautiful landscaped garden whereby visitors will enter through the mouth and exit at the tail. According to Chinese folklore, it is believed that this will lead to good fortune and ward off evil spirits. Inside the air-conditioned space, there are 144 steps and interior walls decorated with traditional Chinese paintings that have multilingual captions. JOHOR Historical Places Istana Besar Johor Completing the initial construction in 1866, Istana Besar, or Grand Palace, was commissioned by the late Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor. Intended to serve as his permanent official residence, the building embedded with Anglo-Malay influence was lavishly decorated with European-style furniture. Currently, large collections of the royal heirlooms and artefacts are preserved at the Royal Abu Bakar Museum inside the palace. During the Japanese occupation, the enemies used it as a fortress and command centre to spy on the British Army in Singapore.
