Being 30 years old, the rubbers were very hard with virtually no flexibility and a real nightmare to fit into my now newly repaired airbox. There were a couple of solutions offered on the internet forums, one of which was dousing with Winter Green oil (I’ve absolutely no idea what this is or where to get it) but I’d also heard of an idea where you take a small plastic bag drop in the rubber and spray loads of silicon spray into the bag and seal it up for 24 hours. The new genuine chain slider arrived from Greece and I had to take the swingarm out to fit it, then complete with new chain and sprockets from B&C Express the rear-end was finished off and Nancy was looking a real bobby dazzler. When it came to chain and sprockets, I decided to run stock gearing, as Paul Firth had put one tooth on the rear and one off the front and when I rode his bike at Snetterton I felt it was over revving at the end of the straights; so I reckoned 116 / classic motorcycle mechanics

Classic class! What is it about certain cubic capacities and their penchant for becoming classics? Bertie Simmonds takes a gander at the 900cc class. They may indicate the power produced by the engine, its think back over the last 40 years or so of the best classic weight, the number of valves opening and closing in the motorcycles, you’ll realise that most of the 900cc machines that popped up along the way have been brilliant. bike’s engine, rake, trail, wheelbase and – most importantly – its Think about that first Kawasaki Z1: some bill it as the first real cubic capacity. superbike, not the CB750. Then go all European and think about Sometimes just the mention of a number can send thrills down Ducati’s seminal 900SS, a machine which lived on for decades in our spines. Just saying ‘250’ to a certain age group of bikers can many, various forms. Then move into the 1980s with Kawasaki’s mean either halcyon days of learner-legal two-strokes pre-1982 GPz900R – a sportsbike which rewrote the rules – before hitting like Suzuki’s X7, Yamaha’s RD250LC, or – later – the banshee- the 1990s and watching Triumph being reborn on a staple diet of howl of the full-on, fully-faired race-replicas like the Kawasaki 900cc triples, some of which are bona fide classics today. Each time an epochal 900 came out, it was often followed by The thought of a ‘500’ always makes me think of two-stroke GP something of similar capacity but which – perhaps – wasn’t quite racers (rather than the four-stroke twins I commuted on) while, for so good. In the 1990s the FireBlade was followed by Kawasaki’s many, the thought of a ‘750’ takes us back either to the original ZX-9R B, which was heavier and stodgier. It wasn’t playing the superbike, the Honda CB750, or perhaps to the late 1980s and same game. And when you look at the prices of Hinckley’s first early 1990s where 750cc four-stroke fours were ‘the’ sportsbike Speed Triples rising, it’s strange to realise the same motor was in class to have. Some may even think of the Kawasaki Z750 twin: a number of other models, but they being much frumpier in style, but it’s each to their own in this game. time hasn’t been as kind. There is another class which has spawned some amazing classic So, what’s our pick of the best of the 900s of the last machines and some howlers: the 900cc class. And it came in yellow, too. Big aesthetic changes came in 1999 with the Pierre Terblanche update, which divided opinions, even if the bike underneath was largely the same. The model was eventually replaced by the SS1000DS in 2003. Ultimately it’s the easiest way into Ducati ownership and while the ‘early’ MkII 900SS from the late-80s, early 90s are hitting £4000+ now, there are also still some nice ones around for a tad over £1500. If rumours are to be believed, back in the late 1980s, the new recruits at Triumph in Bedworth in the Midlands were poring over the GPz’s engine architecture in a bid to come up with something reliable for a range of new British bikes. They played safe with a range of modular triples and fours, and we would argue some of the triples are becoming classics. In 1991/1992, no-one really thought they would be that good – but they were solidly reliable and plenty exciting: especially when the 885cc 12-valve triple was plonked in something attractive like the first Triumph Trident 900s of 1991-on or the first Speed Triples of 1994-1996.
