Tea Road map to Sri LankaTea originated in Southwest China, where it was used asa medicinal drink. It was popularized as a recreational drink during theChinese Tang dynasty, and tea drinking spread to other EastAsian countries. Portuguese priests and merchants introduced it to Europeduring the 16th century. During the 17th century, drinking tea becamefashionable among Britons, who started large-scale production andcommercialization of the plant in India to bypass the Chinese monopoly.The early 1880s were a lean time in Ceylon. The colonial economy hadbeen built almost entirely on the coffee enterprise, and when theenterprise collapsed, so did the economy.

Meanwhile, up in the hills where the Kandy and Dimbula plantationdistricts meet, a reclusive Scots planter named James Taylor had beenexperimenting with a new plant, planting it along the margins of thedivisional roads on his coffee-estate, Loolecondera. The plant was tea.Soon, planters from all over the hill country were visiting Looleconderato learn how to grow and manufacture tea. Ceylon and its plantationindustry were saved.James Taylor was the first Ceylon planter to succeed with tea, but hewas not the first to try. Though records are scant, there is evidence thatthe cultivation of tea plants imported from China was attempted asearly as 1824.

Sri Lanka use the brand “Ceylon Tea” to promote Sri Lankan tea insteadof “Sri Lanka Tea”. It have reasons. The “Ceylon Tea” is the brand thatindustry had been actively promoting and investing in since the early1930s.When the country changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972 After theindependence, Abandoning “Ceylon Tea” would deliver a setback fromwhich there could be no easy recovery. And the cost of promoting andestablishing an unfamiliar new brand – ‘Sri Lanka Tea’ – would beruinous. Industry leaders managed to persuade the socialist governmentthen in power to permit the continued use of the name Ceylon to referto the country’s most famous product.
