Urinary System Function ● To filter blood and create urine as a waste by-product. The organs of the urinary system include the kidneys, renal pelvis, ureters, bladder and urethra. The body takes nutrients from food and converts them to energy.

Urinary System Vocab Urinary system The system that includes all organs involved in reproduction and in the formation and voidance of urine Renal capsule - A smooth transparent membrane the adheres tightly to the external aspect of the kidney, outside layer; connective tissue keeping substances inside. Adipose capsule - Fatty mass that cushions the kidney and helps attach it to the body wall. Renal cortex - The cortex of the kidney containing the glomeruli and the convoluted tubules. Renal medulla - Inner tissue layer of the kidney, contains loops of Henle and collecting tubules; contains pyramids. Medullary pyramid - Striped, or striated, appearance of triangular pyramid of segments of the medulla. Apex - The highest point, tip. Renal columns - Areas of tissue which segregate and dip inward between the pyramids, columns between renal pyramids. Renal pelvis - A structure shaped like a funnel in the outlet of the kidney into which urine is discharged before passing into the ureter. Calyx - Cup-shaped part of the renal pelvis through which urine passes from the renal tubules.

Urinary System Diseases/Disorders ● Benign prostatic hyperplasia - Enlargement of the prostate. ● Cancers or benign tumors - Abnormal growths that occur in the bladder. If the tumor is benign, it's noncancerous and won't spread to other parts of your body. This is in contrast to a tumor that's malignant, which means it's cancerous. ● Dehydration - A dangerous loss of body fluid caused by illness, sweating, or inadequate intake. ● Interstitial cystitis - Conditions involving chronic inflammation of the bladder.

Urinary System Careers ● Urology - Urologists provide medical and surgical management for disorders of the urinary tract in both men and women. ● Nephrologists - Nephrologists begin their careers in internal medicine.

Reproductive System Function ● To produce egg and sperm cells. ● To transport and sustain these cells. ● To nurture the developing offspring.

Reproductive System Vocab Artifical insemination - process of placing semen into opening of cervix using either husband or donor sperm. Bartholin's glands - Glands located on either side of the vaginal opening that secrete mucus for vaginal lubrication. Benign prostatic hypertrophy - Enlargement of the prostate causing the inability to empty the bladder completely. Breast - Either of two soft fleshy milk-secreting glandular organs on the chest of a woman. Bulbourethral gland - Secretes a clear mucus before ejaculation that neutralizes acidic urine remaining in the urethra. Cervix - The opening to the uterus. Chlamydia - A sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria of the genus Chlamydia. Circumcision - Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. Clitoris - Organ of sensitive erectile tissue anterior to the opening of the female urethra. Coitus - The act of sexual procreation between a man and a woman.

Reproductive System Diseases/Disorders ● Endometriosis - A disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. ● Uterine Fibroids - Non Cancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years. ● Gynecologic Cancer - Any cancer that starts in a woman's reproductive organs. ● HIV/AIDS - HIV causes AIDS and interferes with the body's ability to fight infections.

Reproductive System Careers ● Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Nurse - Commonly work with women struggling with infertility, couples having difficulty with conception, or women going through menopause. ● OB/GYN - Has expertise in female reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth.
