Hanukkah or Chanukah? In different writings you may see the word Hanukkah or Chanukah (and other less common variations). You may wonder, which one is correct or why there are different spellings. Much of it has to do with translation. Translating a foreign language into English isn’t as easy as finding a precise English word to replace a foreign word. Letters create sounds, and in the English language, there is no sound that duplicates the Hebrew pronunciation of the word. Jews who descended from Central or Eastern Europe preferred the spelling (CH) due to its similarity to the German sound “Ach.” As the word became more commonly spoken, Americans began spelling it with an H. Thus, the different spellings. Both of which are widely used and accepted.20 Winter 2016

Each cast consist of 40 women, with a total of 36 on stage. The four remaining are called “swings” and can fill in as needed. Their shoes have wireless microphones built into the sole, so the sound of their tap dancing is amplified. The taller women stand in the center of the line with the shorter ones on the end, creating an illusion they’re all the same height. There are about 300 kicks in each show.
