April 2021 www.myaglife.com 51ChemicalCHEMICALNew Sequoia CA insecticide hits Gill’s mealybug like a ten-ton brick. It comes ®from a unique class of chemistry – the sulfoximines – and has never been used in pistachios. The different mode of action makes Sequoia CA an excellent rotation partner in full-season IPM programs with other classes of chemistry. And Sequoia CA fits perfectly into pest management programs that rely on beneficial insects. Sequoia CA can also be used to manage aphids in walnuts and pecans. To learn more, contact your pest control advisor.HIT ME ALYBUGWITH YOURBEST SHOTVisit us at corteva.us® TMTrademarks of Corteva Agriscience and its affiliated companies. April 2021 www.myaglife.com 53ChemicalCHEMICALADVERTORIALUntil recently, Navel Orangeworm IPM lacked a mating disruption option that could be applied reactively based on in-season conditions. CheckMate® NOW-F, the first sprayable pheromone specific to Navel Orangeworm offers exactly that. Instead of requiring investments well before the season’s pest pressure is known, sprayable pheromone provides PCAs and growers the flexibility to apply precisely when and where needed. The demand for a responsive, preventative treatment was clear when growers treated over 100,000 acres with CheckMate® NOW-F in 2019, its first year of registration. The number of treated acres grew in 2020 because of clear evidence that this approach improved existing IPM programs, drove down populations, and reduced damage.PCAs and growers know that prevention is the foundation of the “IPM Pyramid” for any pest. While a reactive tactic that also functions as a preventative measure may seem counterintuitive, applying sprayable pheromone at any point during the season effectively prevents a significant portion of the next generation from ever existing. Preventatively reducing NOW population density also maximizes the impacts of other in-season inputs like insecticides simply because there are fewer larvae to kill. With an average material cost of around $30 per acre per application, CheckMate® NOW-F is a great addition to the sprayable toolkit. It is uniquely designed to be tailored to your operational and pest management needs and can be applied as a tank mix with many common agrochemicals. Performance should be evaluated relative to other sprayable materials like insecticides, with these key differences in mind: • Controlled-release microencapsulated formulation is longer acting than most insecticides.• Mechanism of action does not require thorough foliar coverage, so it can be efficiently applied at lower volumes and higher speeds than insecticides. • Highly-specific active ingredient is safe for all non-target species and the minimal REI allows for easy integration into operational schedules.• Exempt from MRLs and with zero pre-harvest interval, can provide protection for all varieties and multiple shakes up until the day of harvest and beyond. To learn more about this innovative IPM approach, visit www.Suterra.com/CheckMateNOW.THREE OUNCES OF PREVENTION Leveraging Sprayable Pheromone to Improve Quality Returns in 2021Re-entry IntervalPre-harvest IntervalResidual Activity*MRLs4 to 12 hours7 to 14 daysUp to 4 to 21 daysVaries4 hoursCommon InsecticidesZeroUp to 30 daysExempt*Residual activity subject to environmental conditions for conventional insecticides and NOW-F.

Twelve millimeters, the size of a naval orangeworm (NOW), could be the difference between a bountiful harvest and devastating losses. But NOW cannot dictate your pest control program. You manage your orchard with a program that helps control both NOW and secondary insects, and delivers excellent efficacy, greater efficiency and opportunity for higher marketable yields. “When insecticide applications are timed to control multiple pests, they do their best work,” says Garrett Gilcrease, Syngenta Agronomy Service Representative. You know your orchards better than anyone. What does optimal timing and ideal formulation look like for you? Syngenta offers proven insecticides for flexible, fully customizable control of pests in almonds, walnuts and pistachios. You decide what, you decide how and you decide when. With early-season weather already causing orchard stress, it’s important to reduce the risk of additional damage by managing pests now – in a way that extends control in the weeks to come. With multiple tools at your disposal, here are three that can be used in a program customized to deliver optimum results in your tree nut orchards.AdvertorialWhen damaging pests threaten your almonds, walnuts or pistachios, Minecto Pro, Besiege and Proclaim deliver dominance over pests for less rejected nuts and higher profit potential at harvest. These insecticides work together as a powerful, dynamic trio to address challenges in the field, giving you the opportunity to customize your program for maximum profit opportunity. Contact your local retailer or Syngenta representative to create your personalized management program with proven efficacy, flexibility and control all-season-long.Overlapping PestsA broad-spectrum, foliar insecticide, Minecto Pro controls navel orangeworm, ®as well as other tree nut pests including peach twig borer and spider mites. Harnessing the power of two complementary active ingredients, cyantraniliprole and abamectin, into one convenient premix formulation, Minecto Pro protects against multiple pest populations that overlap or occur at the same time. It’s a formula flexible enough to fit into any management plan to meet the needs that your orchard demands. Dual ActionSimilarly, Besiege insecticide ®provides dual-action protection against the most difficult lepidopteran pests, including NOW. Besiege also delivers excellent efficacy against peach twig borer, codling moth, leaffooted plant bug and walnut husk fly. Ideal for application at hull split, it offers excellent knockdown and long-lasting residual.Larval ControlProclaim insecticide is the worm ®specialist for almonds, providing a unique mode of action for control against NOW larvae before they damage nuts and even as they hatch from eggs. Proclaim also offers knockdown activity against adults and suppression of mites for two-to-three weeks after application. Proclaim has minimal impact on beneficial populations. In any pest control program, be sure to rotate modes of action to manage against resistance.
