DONORS CALL TO ACTION The St. Petersburg community demonstrated tremendous support during the 2014 MLK Day of Service Award event. With a budget of $200,00, local organizations, the MLK staff, and Advisory Committee members were able to achieve the following goals on MLK Day of Service Monday, January 20, 2014. 65 organizations were awarded funding 2003 individuals volunteered for a total of 15,652 volunteer hours $64,137 were received in both cash and In-kind donations 15,830 local community citizens were impacted during the Day of Service The MLK Advisory Committee and staff are projecting greater community participation for the 2015 MLK Day of Service Award event. Therefore we are asking local businesses to become donors and help sponsor a service project or donate directly to the MLK Day of Ser- vice Award, (to donate to MLK Day of Service Award please visit www.spcollege.edu/ MLKService and click “Become a Sponsor”). EDUCATION SPAC Delta Sigma Theta Sorority “Delta Academy” service project provided grade appropriate books youth ages 10 to 14 years old. Each Youth participated in different reading sessions during the event and were allowed take their books home at the end of the event. The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, “ Dr. MLK King Book Club and Brunch hosted a Book Club for 25 girls from Campbell Park and Melrose Elementary Schools. The project promoted reading literacy and a love for learning, reading and achieving their educational goals. 7
NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECT ETA RHO Educational Services, Inc. service project purchased and delivered personal hygiene items to disadvantaged families of the Wildwood Neighborhood in St Petersburg Fl. L.I.F.E Organization sponsored a community fair that included re- sources to educate on health topics , HIV testing , condoms ,food, tax consultation. Fresenius medical group performed blood pressure test and games for the children. 8
HEALTH Sistahs Surviving Breast Cancer, a pro- gram of Mt. Zion Human Services, Inc. hosted a health fair that featured breast cancer education for low-income residents living in the St. Petersburg, Fl. Mid-town area. Sickle Cell Disease Association of America conducted a blood drive for Individuals in need of blood products. 9
ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY Pinellas Ex Offender Re Entry Coalition conducted workshops that covered two specific categories: Education and Economic Opportunity. The work- shops focused on employment, empower- ment, and dream. The project’s theme was “Believing and imaging your future (vision) are squarely rooted in the spirit of economic uplift and opportunity”. The Deuces Live service project hosted a retail cart vendor event. The project focused on two goals: increasing the amount of retail offerings on 22nd Street South and providing both under-employed and unemployed individuals entrepreneurial opportunity. 10
CLEAN ENERGY / ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP African American Heritage Association-Jordan Park Head Start Victory Garden ad- dressed three areas: education, health, and environmental stewardship. It provided an opportunity for inter-generational interaction between children, teens and adults on a common gardening project. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. -Zeta Upsilon Omega (ZUO) chapter held its service project at the Starling School and Daycare in St. Petersburg, FL. ZUO partnered with the Eta Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of this project was to instill a sense of pride in the students knowing they are in a safe, healthy environment away from home by the beautifying the school grounds. Xeriscape type plants were added throughout the property and two playgrounds were mulched. 11
2014 MLK SIGNATURE PROJECTS Bethel A.M.E. Human Services and Education Foundation, Inc. signature project provided homeless services in the following ar- eas: medical examinations, vision and hearing screening to pre- school and school age youth. The project also served prepared breakfast each Sunday and distributed food items to the local homeless population. Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association weeRead youth literacy project held several book signing sessions and gave youth an opportunity to meet the author of the book that they re- ceived. The Gathering of Women hosted a two part project: Man Camp that mentored young African-American males on pro-social interaction, appro- priate problem-solving and decision making skills, plus sponsored a college tour for males and female high school students to Bethune-Cookman University. 12
