MEMBA CONTRIBUTION Here’s to some more numbers membas…… Data sourced from Weather Service SA reported that the 2016-2017 season will be remembered as the driest recorded since 1904, and has placed tremendous pressure on South Africa’s economy. South Africa has less water per person than Botswana & Namibia United Nations’ Aquastats data shows that South Africa has more renewable freshwater resources than Botswana and Namibia. In 2013, it had a total of 44.8 billion m³ of water available – a quarter of the capacity of the Kariba, Africa’s largest dam. But these resources are stretched thin when population size is taken into is much higher than population figures in Botswana and Namibia. The bigger the population the more demands it puts on resources. For every person in South Africa, the country had 822.2 m³ of freshwater available at last count – compared to 1,061 m³ per resident of Botswana. In Namibia, each resident theoretically has access to 2,505 m³ of water (This is about the volume of an Olympic size swimming pool). South African rainfall is highly seasonal and variable, with greater variability in the dry interior. With low inputs and a large population, South Africa is, in relative terms, more water scarce than neighbouring Namibia, despite the fact that Namibia has approximately half of South Africa’s average annual rainfall. National demand is projected to increase by 32% (to 17 700 million m³) by 2030 due to population growth and industrial development. Is South Africa’s water supply threatened? The drought has affected the whole country, resulting in water shortages with associated socio-economic sufferings. The KwaZulu-Natal region has been reported to be the hardest hit in this regard while the Eastern Cape has been the least affected, he said. Water resource planning systems in the department of Water and Sanitation has reported that mainly areas with little or no water resource storage facilities are affected most by the drought where water shortages are experienced. South Africa’s water storage is under pressure. South Africa’s dams were 55.4% full on 11 January 2016, although it is still some way off from the 35-year low point of 34% reached in November 1983. Research topic: How can Inanda Seminary reduce its water consumption? 1. First know how much water is consumed 2. Which activity in the school uses most water? 3. How can use of water be managed? 4. Adopting water wise theme (similar to language rule) to encourage wise use of water By Duduzile Ngidi We rise by lifting each other up
