03 Keyboard Practical Exercise

A keyboard is one of the primary input devices used with a computer. Similar to an electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of buttons used to create letters, numbers, and symbols. The following image shows ‘104-key’ keyboard with arrows pointing to each section, including the control keys, function keys, LED indicators, wrist pad, arrow keys, and keypad.

Caps Lock Pressing on the ‘caps lock’ key allows typing in capital letters. 1. Press the ‘caps lock’ key once again to type in lower case letters. 2. A small green/white light on the keyboard indicates the status (light on – Capital letters, light off – lower case letters).

Arrow keys There are four arrow keys on a keyboard. These keys allow you to move the cursor up, down, left, and right. 1.‘up’ and ‘down’ arrow keys move the cursor up or down by one line at a time. 2.‘left’ and ‘right’ arrow keys move the cursor left or right by one letter at a time.

‘backspace key’: This key erases the letter typed before the cursor. It is usually the last key in the row of number keys. ‘delete key’: This key deletes the letter which is typed after the cursor.

Page Up/ Page Down These two keys are used to move the cursor up or down, one page at a time. Additional Information: Why is the keyboard an input device? A computer keyboard is considered as an input device because it only sends the data to the computer and does not receive any information from it. As you type on the keyboard, you are inputting the information into the computer. What are multimedia keys? Multimedia keys are those keys that allow the user to control the music on their computer. These keys add functionality, such as play, pause, stop, rewind, fast forward, skip track, eject, shuffle, and repeat.

What keys appear twice on a keyboard? On a typical keyboard, three keys appear twice. They are the ‘alt keys’, ‘ctrl keys’ and ‘shift keys’. Almost all the keys on the numeric keypad are duplicated. These keys include the divide (/), times (*), subtract (-), plus (+), period (.), numbers 0 through 9, and the ‘enter key’. The only key on the numeric keypad that does not appear twice is the ‘num lock’ key.
