Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together Head Teacher Mr D Mc Garrigle Welcome to Addison Primary School. I am privileged and proud to be Head Teacher of a school where everyone works in partnership to ensure all our pupils reach their full potential. We share a vision for each child to be challenged; have the best opportunities; be happy and achieve so that everyone will achieve their full potential. We hope children will enjoy their time at Addison and develop the self-confidence and independence necessary to succeed now as well as in later life. We will help pupils to learn the skills and attitudes to enable them to take on the new and exciting challenges of secondary school and to become responsible, aware citizens. I hope that you enjoy reading about the curricular experiences we offer and share our belief, that in order to be happy, achieve and succeed, our pupils need an inspiring curriculum. This booklet offers an overview of the organisation and key events that will occur throughout the year. For curriculum information please refer to the school website. Deputy Head Teacher Miss S Plummeridge I am the Deputy Head Teacher responsible for Inclusion across the school, School Direct (training to become a qualified teacher) and Newly Qualified Teachers. To enable your child to thrive, I believe that educating your child requires a partnership between parents and school. We want everyone in our school to feel involved, included and supported. We see all children as individuals with different interests, talents and capabilities. The recognition of this is found in the rich curriculum and varied activities within the school. We seek to ensure that our systems enable us to communicate effectively with each other about your child’s education and welfare. In this way we aim to build a successful 3

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together partnership with you, so that together we can ensure that your child achieves his/her potential. If your child needs extra help the class teacher and I may speak to you about a strategy to support your child. This may be for your child to participate in a targeted intervention programme over a term or so, so they can catch up with their peers. Above all, we want everyone to be happy at Addison Primary School, learn and to achieve to the best of their ability. Assistant Head Teacher (Safeguarding Lead) Mrs A Thompson-Smith I am the Assistant Head Teacher responsible for making sure all of our children feel safe both whilst in school and out of school. In addition, I am also responsible for the Extended Day at Addison: Breakfast Club, Play Centre and After School clubs plus ensuring that the trips are safely organised by the Teachers. Ofsted defines Safeguarding as, ‘Protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to ensure all children have the best outcomes’ At Addison all staff and visitors need to be aware of the systems that support safeguarding:  All staff have training on Safeguarding; noticing the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect and identify children who might be in need of help or protection  Visitors are given a leaflet on Keeping Children Safe at Addison  Any concerns about a child are reported immediately to the Safeguarding Lead and our guidelines and procedures are followed Assistant Head Teacher Miss N Dirir I am the Assistant Head Teacher and my role ensures that Teaching & Learning across the school is consistently of an excellent standard. I support and guide teachers in preparing learning opportunities that cultivate our pupils’ understanding and equally challenges their thinking. We use ongoing assessments for learning and termly assessments to tailor our teaching to best meet the needs of our children. This is achieved by using the outcomes from the assessments to inform our planning. Our curriculum celebrates our diverse and multi-cultural school community. We strive to establish opportunities for progression in the skills and knowledge gained by our pupils. 4

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together Addisons ethos is firmly rooted in our values and we always encourage our pupils to apply them to their learning and their interactions with others. We teach our pupils to take responsibility for their decisions and to learn from their mistakes in order to ensure they grow as individuals. We understand that some children require further support with their behavioural needs and as such, we have developed a Well-being team that works alongside teachers, pupils and parents so that all children learn in a safe, secure and happy environment. Knowing how to work as an individual or as part of a group. Values-based Philosophy We are a values-based school and we seek to promote an educational philosophy based on valuing self, others and the environment through, the consideration of an ethical values vocabulary (principles that guide behaviour), as the basis of good educational practice. This approach encourages adults to model values and to give time for reflective practices that empowers individuals to be effective learners and good citizens. There are 22 values at Addison. We focus on one value every month over a 2-year cycle. Each value has 3 reflection points which enables us to share and understand a common values vocabulary. 2020/21 Value September Responsibility October Nurture November Respect December Generosity January 2021 Cooperation February Honesty March Friendship April Tolerance May Loyalty June Perseverance July Peace In addition to the ‘Value of the Month’ we also have five core values. We refer to these in our everyday interactions and as a reminder of how to be a good person and contribute to school life. The core values are: 7

Stages of learning  Foundation stage  Phase 1  Phase 2 14

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together Children are organised into phases. Our phases help us create the feeling of three small schools within one bigger school. Foundation Stage - Nursery & Reception Children in our Nursery and Reception form our Foundation Stage. Learning focuses on the Early Years Foundation Stage, following the interests of children. Emphasis is placed on learning through play with a focus on Reading, Phonics, Writing and Maths. Phase One - Year Groups 1, 2 & 3 Children in Year Groups 1, 2 and 3 form our Phase 1. Learning is based on the National Curriculum. Teaching steadily becomes more formal, moving away from learning through play. Emphasis is placed on Reading, Phonics and Writing together with Mathematics. Children continue to learn in topics related to the curriculum. Phase Two - Year Groups 4, 5 & 6 Children in Year Groups 4, 5 & 6 form our Phase 2. Learning is based on the National Curriculum. Emphasis is placed on Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Children continue to learn in topics associated with the curriculum. At the end of Year 6 (end of Key-Stage 2), children are formally tested (SATs). Class organisation There are typically two classes of up to 30 children in every year group. Each class is staffed with a qualified teacher. We have a number of Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) and teaching Assistants (TA’s) that complement the class teachers. We also have Learning Support Assistants (LSA) who provide focused 1:1 support for pupils with additional needs. One class in each year group is named as a colour with the other class named as a corresponding gemstone. Classes are referred to as colours or gems. Curriculum 15

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together For your childs curriculum please see the school website and click on their class or year group. After-School Collection Reception and Nursery – parents come into the school via Addison Gardens entrance. This allows our youngest pupils to remain in class until an adult comes to collect. Y1 – Y6 - children line up in the main playground at the designated meeting point. Different rules apply:  Year 6 children are able to walk home and leave the premises alone  Years 4-5 are able to walk home alone if agreed in advance with a written letter  Years 1- 3 should be collected by a known and responsible adult. If class teachers are uncertain they will always 'hold onto' child and check with a senior member of staff - this is to ensure your childs safety please be understanding and patient All children need to shake the teachers hand before they leave school. Please make sure that you inform school if there is a possibility you will be late when collecting your child. Late collection Teachers take uncollected children to School Office. Office 3.45pm Administrators make the phone calls home. 4.00pm-4.30pm Administrators continue to try contacting families, Office and SLT and alert a member of the Senior Leadership Team. It is at this time that a decision may be made to make contact with Social Services. We are flexible and supportive if a parent arrives late. However, if arriving late is a regular occurrence then we may ask you to attend school to discuss the matter. End of day punctuality by parents is an expectation. 16

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together Safeguarding Children Child Protection The Assistant Head Teacher (AHT), Mrs A. Thompson-Smith, is the Designated Person for Child Protection with the Head Teacher (HT) taking the responsibility in her absence. In the absence of the AHT or HT, other members of the SLT will assume responsibility We have a legal duty of care for pupils to ensure their health, safety and well-being. The school is a reporting agent - we pass on concerns about children’s well-being to partners in Children’s Services and the Police as appropriate. Inclusion The Deputy Head Teacher (DHT), Ms S. Plummeridge, has responsibility for pastoral provision and Inclusion throughout the school. She leads a team of adults in providing focused support for those pupils that need further support with forming friendships and following school expectations. We have a designated space at lunchtimes where children can go and learn about how to be a good friend and how to interact positively with others. This area is led by our Well-being leaders, Miss P. Sheppard. Behaviour All children are able to behave very well and to be very polite. This is a fact and is what we expect at Addison. Some children need to see other ways of behaving than those that they are used to or are allowed to display at home. However, generally, Addison pupils want to behave well and show good behaviour. This helps them to be successful in school, in the community and later in life. It is our duty to actively manage behaviour and to praise pupils who are behaving well as well as challenge inappropriate patterns of behaviour. We have a very powerful positive behaviour management system in the school. All staff are required to keep to the same system of consequences and rewards. Honesty At Addison, we have an approach where children are expected to be honest straight away and have a smaller consequence approach for children who are honest and accept responsibility for their actions. It is important that all staff have the same approach and consistently promote honesty. 17

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together Equality All children are treated equally with regards to consequences and rewards. All children are treated equally; every day is a new day and a fresh start. Everyone has a fair chance and the opportunity to learn from all of their behaviour with our support and guidance. Assessment At our school assessment means continually evaluating children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, establishing what children can do and what their next learning steps should be. Assessment is at the heart of the learning process. It provides valuable evidence to guide and improve teaching and learning. Alongside this it offers an opportunity for children to demonstrate and review their progress. It is an integral part of our relentlessly ambitious, high expectations culture. We are committed to: Using assessment, day-to-day, in the classroom to raise children’s achievement and their aspirations. We believe that pupils will improve most if they understand the aim of their learning, where they are in relation to this aim and how they can achieve the aim (or close the gap in their knowledge). Providing children with clear, precise and easily comprehensible feedback, in oral and written forms, that will support their learning. We will always expect children to engage with this feedback and frequently we will ask them to respond to it. The quality and value of teachers’ feedback will be evaluated by how great an impact it has on pupils’ future progress. Involving children at all times in an ongoing self-improvement process and assisting them to understand that the continual quest to improve oneself is a crucial life skill. Assessment feedback should inspire ever greater effort and a belief that, through commitment, hard work and practise more can be achieved. Using assessment to draw upon a wide range of evidence that establishes a full picture of what a child can do. Assessment outcome: In order to be secondary ready, children need to meet the required end of Key Stage 2 expectations; this is broken down into key outcomes for each curriculum year. We use the National Curriculum objectives to assess outcomes for children at the end of each curriculum year – for example: 18

Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together  Emerging -A child achieving only a few the objectives of the curriculum in their year group.  Developing - A child achieving half or so of the objectives of the curriculum in their year group.  Secure - A child that has achieved most of the objectives of the curriculum in their year group.  Working at Greater Depth - A child that has achieved most of the objectives of the curriculum in their year group and are now exploring them at a greater depth with a greater level of challenge to expand their understanding. Assessment Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - Nursery & Reception Children in Nursery and Reception will continue to be assessed against the Prime and Specific areas of Learning in the EYFS profile.  Assessments will be based on observation of daily activities and events. At the end of Reception for each Early Learning Goal, teachers will assess whether a child is meeting the level of development expected at the end of the Reception year: o Emerging, not yet reached the expected level of development o Expected o Exceeding, beyond the expected level of development for their age Reporting to Parents We report to parents via parent consultation each term. These discussions centre around the children academic and social development. We will compile a report to parents twice a year - Mid-Year (February) and at the end of the year (July). Reports explain each child’s progress and attainment. Discussions at parent teacher consultation meetings in the Autumn and Spring terms are based on the assessment system in place for each age group. It is crucial that parents attend the consultation evening - Children’s learning will be enhanced if the partnership between parent and school is strong and based on open communication. 19
