Mr. Johnson chatting Insights Brian Johnson with the SCS pioneer Head of School Sharron Drury at the Lakeside Campus. As we celebrate Southwest Christian School’s 50th year, we hope that alumni (and parents of alumni) will come home to SCS to see how much—and how little— has changed. Those who remember the earliest days of our young school, when students, parents, and staff pitched in to do whatever was necessary (picking up rocks on the field, for instance!), may find a visit today to be a shock. Yet the community that is SCS in 2019 was born through the vision and work of those families who wanted to provide a great Christian education in 1969, and 79, and 89, etc. Certainly, the campuses have grown and been updated. They stand as visual reminders of the maturing of our school, as it has added exciting academic, artistic, and athletic programs to meet the needs of each generation of students. Through the generosity of generations of families, the Lord has blessed our dedicated faculty and staff with remarkable resources with which to work. From hydroponic towers to 3D printers, from the theater design shop to the extensive fitness center, SCS offers truly exceptional opportunities for budding engineers, artists, athletes and more. However, there is something more, something deeper, something timeless. We remain true to our mission to serve the Lord by providing a Christ-centered, college preparatory education that graduates young adults equipped as Christian leaders in the world. In this issue of our magazine, you’ll find evidence of that focus. SCS, though larger and more diverse than in its early stages, is still very much a small community where students are known, a place where teachers and coaches strive to connect with young people, pour into them, and point them toward the light of Christ. I hope you’ll also see how we continue to impact lives on our campuses and beyond. The students, alumni, faculty and staff, volunteers, and trustees are carrying this banner to the corners of the earth… and making a difference throughout Fort Worth as well. We strive to build and repair community. We serve others. Our artists create and explore their craft for a purpose. Our athletes and coaches give the glory to God. While we’re grateful for the hard work and talent that led to the many accolades we’ve noted, we are also eager to see how our students and alumni use their growing platforms to express their faith. We have much to celebrate this year, and I hope to see you and your family at SCS. Yet let’s not lose sight—in the glow of the fireworks over the lake or in the shadow of new facilities, in the warm embrace of friends from long ago or in the jubilation of a new achievement—of that which unites us. It is that which has bound us from the very start and is truly timeless. Brian Johnson President and Head of School 4 SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL | SCS Life

Blooms of Grace By Kimberlea Bass Head of SCS Visual Arts Department 10 SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL | SCS Life
Once again, Southwest Christian’s Visual Art Department partnered with Fort Worth Cancer Center Services to create inspiring paintings for the center’s patients. This year’s collection called “Blooms of Grace” was produced by 17 of SCS’ advanced art students, and hung in the hallways of the center throughout the school year. The goal of the paintings was to give hope, courage, and motivation to patients and caregivers who passed by the art during treatment. . In April, the paintings were put up for auction in an online event that raised over $800 for FWCCS to support cancer patients, provide care for caregivers, and empower survivors. Advanced art students will begin creating next year’s art installment once school starts back in August. Stay tuned for the theme and possible on-campus viewings. Artists featured in this year’s art display include: John Baggs, Anna Gerrish, Olivia Grassi, Sean Hannifin, Reagan Jones, Julie Jung, Ethan Metz, Addison Mints, Natalie Neale, Jillian Norman, Lucy Phillips, Elijah Simpson, Jordan Taylor, Isabella Thomas, Isabella Vargas, Cameron Wylie, and Jordan Wylie. Campus. A group of 5th and 6th grade girls met with me each week to learn how to recognize negative friendship behaviors they see in others and possibly themselves. During our time together, the girls focused on eliminating the Mean Girl in the Mirror. We also discussed how mean girls are most likely hurting in some way we cannot see, and this is what causes them to act out with bullying behaviors–hurt people hurt people. The girls were encouraged to change or reprogram their own negative self-talk and recognize that sometimes we can bully ourselves. I knew I was making an impression when one participant shared that each morning she would look in the mirror and think, “I am not good enough. I’m not pretty.” She proudly proclaimed that she replaced the thoughts with, “I am ENOUGH. I am pretty on the outside and more importantly on the inside.” As a group, we discussed how as Christians we are called to a higher standard versus the world’s standards. We brainstormed ideas on how we can reach out to others, include the unseen, and speak up in situations where we seeing bullying and other negative behaviors taking place. Additionally, we talked about the pressures of the world, how friendship drama is so confusing at times and the general grind of homework. As the girls gained confidence in themselves as a group and me as a listener, they shared fears of failure and fears of being excluded. We talked practical tips on how to talk to others, body language, and the curse of gossip. In the end, we all admitted we were not perfect, and that we have been mean at times. But thankfully we can work to improve ourselves each day with the grace of Jesus Christ. This peek into the girls’ lives gave me hope for a kinder future, more empathy in the world, and confidence in the children we are raising in our community. SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL | SCS Life 15
Craig Smith, Associate Head of School DEAR SCS Family & Friends It’s a great time to be an Eagle! Once again, we are thankful for many things at SCS. School wide enrollment continues to grow with God working through you as you share the mission and ministry of our school with friends and family. We’re not trying to be the largest Christian school on the planet, but strategic enrollment growth, including enrollment retention—both very positive in our case—are important indicators of a healthy school. Financially, SCS is operating strongly in the black and philanthropic support also continues to grow. Soon, you will hear more about a transformational project that will impact our SCS community and specifically, our Lakeside campus. Most of you reading this invest in SCS every day, and it shows. Your tuition dollars make quality Christian teaching, coaching, and mentoring available for your student(s). Philanthropic support through the Excellence Fund and other avenues makes possible the margin of excellence which tuition doesn’t cover. In an effort to keep you informed about our finances we plan to publish the school’s annual report in SCS Life once a year. However, as we adjust to our new schedule, you will be seeing financial data and other results for 2017-18 in this issue of the magazine. In our next issue, planned for the beginning of 2020, you will see our numbers for 2018-19. From then on, we plan to report data every January. Confusing enough? Hopefully, it won’t be after you see it all. Thank you for being part of SCS, and even if your life journey is well beyond the walls of our school, please stay connected and involved.
