AUTHOR'S INTRODUCTION The thirteen tunes in this book, composed by Michael Rosen, fit neatly into the classic jazz style, taking cues from the big band and small ensemble music of the 1950's and 1960's. Most of the songs are in the \"AABA\" format, and nearly all are 32 bars long. The various rhythms, accents and melodic ideas are meant to familiarize developing players with many of the common elements of the classic jazz style. Dynamics and articulation indications such as slurring, tonguing and various accents have been included, and correspond to the versions provided on the online tracks, in particular to those of the saxophone, recorded by the author. To what degree these are replicated is at the discretion of teacher and the player, although the slurring and tonguing indications are strongly recommended, as these play a crucial part in playing the style correctly. Accurately following the articulation suggestions and dynamics will make for a longer practice period but be well worth the time spent. Likewise, tempos - indicated above the first line of each song - correspond precisely to the online backing track versions. Some tempos may be too lively for some players, in particular during the practice period prior to mastering a given song. It is therefore suggested to first listen to the complete backing track with the recorded saxophone to get an idea of the general sound and approach prior to practicing it and ideally working up to the suggested tempo, with the ultimate goal of playing each tune together with the saxless track or together with the complete rhythm section plus saxophone track. Enjoy! Michael Rosen 5

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author would like to thank Seby Burgio, Morris Pleasure and Marcus Williams for their kind collaboration and superb playing on the backing tracks as well as the many fine teachers with whom I have had the pleasure of studying, particularly Jim Odgren, Greg Badolato and George Garzone. 6
