EAEP 2020 CATALOGUE A Competency-Based Curriculum is a curriculum that emphasises the importance of developing skills and knowledge of learners and applying these to real life situations. Competency is the ability to apply appropriate knowledge and skills to successfully CBC perform a function. Therefore, this curriculum provides the opportunity for learners to develop and apply their skills and knowledge, or in other words, their competencies in their daily lives. The basic definition of a Competency-Based Curriculum is that it is Child-centred learning. Child-centred learning is an approach to teaching that places children at the centre of the learning process. Here are five important ideas in child-centred learning: 1. learning is social; learners often do activities in pairs or groups and help each other to learn; 2. learners develop a wide range of thinking skills, such as analysing, creating and evaluating; 3. the teacher is a facilitator of learning, not simply a source of knowledge; 4. the teacher plans lessons around the needs, interests and environment of the learners; 5. each lesson starts from what the learners already know and builds on this. The new system of education in Kenya has a structure of 2-6-3-3: 1. Early Years Education: • Pre-primary: a two-year programme – Pre-primary I and Pre-primary II; • Lower Primary: the first three years of primary school – Grades 1, 2 and 3; 2. Middle School Education: • Upper Primary: Grades 4, 5 and 6; • Lower Secondary: Grades 7, 8 and 9 3. Senior School, Tertiary and University: • Tertiary Education and Training: Grades 10, 11 and 12 2 The Peak in Publishing

From the time he launched himself as a pioneer African writer with Weep Not, Child (1964), there was no stopping Ngugi. Weep Not, Child was quickly followed up by The River Between (1965) and A Grain of Wheat (1967), both of which con rmed Ngugi as a writer of great ambition. The publication of Petals of Blood (1977) and the 375.00pre-publication staging of the Gikuyu version of I Will Marry When I Want (a play), swiftly led to his detention without trial by Kenya’s authorities. After detention, Ngugi issued Caaitani Mutharaba-ini, (Devil on the Cross —1982) and Matigari ma Njirungi (1986), a novel in Gikuyu. Ngugi is also a renowned playwright which such works as The Black Hermit (1968) and The Trial of Dedan Kimathi (1976), co-authored with Micere Githae Mugo. Besides novels and plays, he has also written 435.00volumes of essays and has published an anthology of short stories — C Secret Lives (1963). All Ngugi’s novels are published in the Peak Library. M Y “A Grain of Wheat is about Kenya on the verge of independence. Africans CM and Europeans alike pause, in the lull between the ghting and the new world, to see what they have gained and lost. After working brie y as a secondary 430.00school teacher, he was commissioned into the Nigerian army and remained at the Nigerian Defense Academy in Kaduna until his voluntary retirement and return to the teaching profession on the eve of the Nigerian civil war in 1965. His unpleasant encounters with the Biafran authorities are recorded in Sunset in Biafra (1973). Amadi's portrait of Nigerian society in his rst post-civil war novel, Estrangement (1986), vividly evokes the 495.00image of the total destruction of time-honoured individual and community bonds in the pre-war society. Amadi now lives in retirement near Port Harcourt, the setting of his rst novels The Concubine (1966), The Great Ponds (1969) and The Slave (1978) in which Igbo cultural ambience remains unmistakable. The Great Ponds is about a ruinous feud between the two 425.00villages of Chiolu and Aliakoro. For years, the village of Chiolu had shed in the ponds of Wagaba (alluded to in the book title) without hindrance. However, when the neighbouring village of Aliakoro starts to encroach on the pond, war breaks out between the two villages, as the people of Chiolu seek to protect their ownership of the ponds. The story traces its way back to the 520.00pre-colonial era, a time when Africans believed in the power of magic and supernatural healing possessed by the traditional healers (dibias, as used in the book) and divine intervention to appease the gods. 640.00 East African Educational Publishers 530.00Educate•Enlighten•Empower East African Educational Publishers Nairobi • Kampala • Dar es Salaam • Kigali • Lusaka • Lilongwe 650.00 455.00white teeth cover.pdf 1 8/20/19 6:25 PM 345.00 Okot p’Bitek Okot p’Bitek White Teeth White Teeth 510.00The late OKOT p’BITEK was born in 1931 in Gulu, northern Uganda. Kabira & M. Mutahi literature: oral narratives; proverbs; riddles; and a variety of songs for 435.00different occasions. The versions in this book were collected by the author from a specific Maasai community in Kajiado County of Kenya. The author listened to many of the narratives and participated in many proverb and riddle telling sessions as she grew up in her Ilbissil village of Kajiado Central Sub-county. However, she recorded most of the examples of oral literature in the early seventies with the help of her mother, who performed the role of the oral artist. Many songs were recorded from live performances. 365.00The examples ring with individuality, while also revealing a comprehensive way of life of a people. The images in the literature reveal the concrete life of the Maasai – people living closely with their livestock and engaged in constant struggle with the environment. But like all important literature, the materials here ultimately reveal a people with its moral and spiritual concerns, grappling with questions of human values and relations, struggling for a better social order. 530.00This book recommends itself to the general reader. However, the book is more than this: it includes stimulating discussions of examples, as well as review questions and exercises. The book is highly recommended to students of oral literature at secondary school level and at the university. Naomi Kipuri is a graduate of Temple University with a PhD in Anthropology.
