MATLA | COAL MANDELA DAY celebrated by PLEXIPHON Innovative Solutions On 18 July 2017, PLEXIPHON Innovative Solutions spent time with Ma’Mqwathi, a pensioner who takes care of her 13 grandchildren in Thubelihle. The family lives on very little and has basic needs. PLEXIPHON donated groceries, stationary and school shoes to this needy family in the spirit of Ubuntu. A small symbolic action in celebration of humanity taught to us by our former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. AWARDS The Long Service Awards for employees with 20 - 40 years of service was held on 20 October 2017 at Graceland, Secunda. Of the 109 employees awarded, 3 celebrated 40 years of service. His recipe for staying young and being a hard worker? No beer, no smoking and eating only your wife’s food! He loves watching soccer, with Pirates being the team he supports as well as the rugby when the Springboks are playing. Lucas Khopele with his wife, Joyce. Lucas started his mining career at Blinkpan in 1977 when the company was known as Trans Natal, as a fitter aid. In 1980 he was transferred to Matla and appointed as a fitter aid at Mine 1. Herman Schoeman, Head of Maintenance, Development at Mine 2, was invited by the Secunda Freshwater angling club to participate in a Target and Long Casting competition against other angling clubs in the Mpumalanga region. The competition took place on Saturday, 20 May 2017. A week later Herman was informed that he was chosen for the Mpumalanga team to participate in the Nationals on 10 June 2017 at Vereeniging and…their team came 2 and won the silver medal in Target Casting. nd This was also a first for Mpumalanga to achieve silver medals in all the divisions. SPORT Greatest train race Saturday, 19 August 2017 In 2017 the organizers of the race, aimed to raise R1.2m for charity. Individuals had to race along the R555 route between eMalahleni and Middelburg (Mpumalanga). The relay consisted of 5 members running a circular route in the vicinity of the Kees Taljaard Stadium in Middelburg. A number of employees from corporations, private companies, government departments, scholars etc participated in this community driven charity event. The race was open to all members of the public, interested in contributing to the wellbeing of their community and who were FIT for the challenge. Various legs of the race were 32km, 15km, 4.9km fun run and a 25km team relay event. Medals were awarded to all finishers. Zuritha du Preez and her son, Reyner, ran the 15km leg and completed the race on 19 August 2017. Izwelethu | Matla Newsletter November 2017 19
