Myers, KI Archivist (email: [email protected]) In the last issue of Shalom KI, I wrote about family trees lives and deaths in America, seemingly shedding years as they as an avenue to create, understand, and pass down one’s family crossed the Atlantic. history. The fact that indicated DNA matches, by themselves, cannot create the desired history, we must rely on research. So how do KI’s archival records rate? I find most valuable There are plenty of documents and databases available. (and unique for the period) KI’s Religious School Registry The problem is that some are less reliable than others are; which dates from the mid-1870s because its pages include not and only some are easily accessible. Some researchers are only the child’s name and age, but the enrolling parent’s name too anxious to identify a match or connection. and address. KI marriage records did not include the bride’s and groom’s parents until the 1890s. However, prior to that, Because there are many first cousins named after the same Rabbi Hirsch’s KI Marriage Journal from 1866–1888 included grandparents, they will likely share birthdays that are within where they were born and where they currently lived. Though a few years of each other. Thus, records that includes two many from that period were born and raised in Philadelphia, generations (such as a marriage or death record, which includes there were many who were born in Germany and, to a lesser parents’ names) add a degree of assurance that the right person extent, in other European environs. is being identified. The originals, having been found that some Social Security records are less accurate than handwritten, may have transcription errors, though I have found the U.S. Military veterans’ death records. One must take, with a surname spelling errors in the printed annual KI Yearbooks of grain of salt, the birth dates etched on gravestones — they were the early 20th century. Despite this, these are valuable because obviously based on what survivors thought. Personally, I have of the inclusion of addresses, deaths, and other events. When found that the birth records of German towns from which my Joe Davidson and I were researching the material for the great-grandparents came differed from records of their later Veterans Memorial Book a few years ago, we discovered that some of the World War I dates of death listed on the plaques (See Archives on P. 23)
