Services, classes, and activities moved online seamlessly. While we would prefer to be together in our sanctuary for the High Holy Days, we will be together online and on Zoom, as preparations have been underway for months to make sure our services are meaningful. Last year our theme was Tikkun Olam — repairing the world. KI did not waiver from this charge even when hit with the pandemic. We continued to raise money and find ways to give to local people in need. This is ingrained in our KI members. This year while we will continue to do all of our social action and social justice work, we will focus on Tikkun HaNefesh — repairing one’s soul. It does seem like we are all in need of some of this right now. What can we do to repair our souls? For some it might mean finding some quiet time for yourself each day, for others it might mean exercising, for some volunteering, and for others it might mean becoming more engaged with your Judaism. If for you, repairing your soul means a deeper connection to Judaism, volunteering, yoga or meditation, or continuing your education, please check our website, read our weekly emails, or call our office to see how KI can help on your journey. We want to be your partner. I wish you all a happy and healthy 5781, and I hope we can be together again soon. Shanah Tovah! 8 FALL 2020

In Our Community SHALOM KI 13 Women of KI By Lynore Eisman, President, Women of KI It is nearing the High Holy Days and although we cannot be together physically, Women of KI wants you to know that we are praying with you. There is a poem, “You Hold Out Your Hand,” that speaks to me and comes directly after Avinu Malkeinu. It reflects God’s mercy as we offer our apologies for hurts we may have done to others. So, I offer my hand in sincere apology, friendship, and caring during this time of year. Many of you know that my husband, Elliot received a kidney in June after waiting for 4 ½ years. He is doing well and getting stronger every day. I hope this brings hope to you, your families, and all our futures. Elliot and I would like to thank all of you for sending your prayers and good thoughts to us through our long journey. Your caring is an important part of why being a part of KI is so special to us. Thank you! In October 2019, we had a very special program and Shabbat Service in an attempt to find a living donor for Elliot. While these events helped us spread the word about the importance of organ and tissue donation through our community, we were unable to find a living donor. A very special kind of person, a hero in our eyes, an organ donor, unfortunately, passed away at 60 years of age. By being a donor, he saved many lives, including Elliot’s, as he received his kidney. It is so important to be a “Gift of Life” donor. Please think about checking off the Gift of Life organ box on your driver’s license or ID card. You, too, can be a HERO. Our KI Mitzvah Garden has reopened this year and a wonderful new group of KI members have helped plant, weed, water, and have harvested our vegetables. You may have driven by and seen some of our beautiful tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants and string beans growing on the vine, as well as, all the beautiful flowers started last year. This year our vegetables are being donated to the local food pantries. Women of KI want to let you know that we are here for you even if we could not be together in person. Let us know how you and your family are doing; we are wishing you and your family well. Please feel free to contact me, Lynore, at 215.676.1812 or [email protected].
