From the Bimah Rabbi’s May We Be Healed Message May we be healed by those who attend to us. Rabbi Lance J. May their experience, knowledge, and kindness help restore our bodies and spirits. Sussman, Ph.D. May the genius of modern science work hand-in-hand with the ancient wisdom of the human heart. May the doctors, nurses, and attendants who treat us bring all their powers of person to our bedsides with focus and devotion. May the love and concern of our families assure us that life has meaning and deep purpose. May the messages of friends from near and far bring us solace, hope, and remind us of the beauty of interdependence. May our own fears dissolve in the sea of love, which washes us with the balm of loving reassurance. May the prayers of our hearts, our youth, and age give us strength to carry on. May the transcendent eternal love inherent in the universe lift our spirits and keep us strong in times of darkness. May the stars, sun, and rainbows drawn by the children in our lives help us to heal and strive to reach the tomorrows of health and happiness. May we be healed and resolve to bring healing and comfort to others in the days ahead when we are well again. May we know that the power of love is with us wherever we go and always be the north star of our lives. Amen. Rabbi Lance J. We have had a number of events throughout the summer and the fall, and this has been a great way to stay connected with KIFTY during this time at home. In addition to KIFTY-specific events in the spring, there were also many NFTY–PAR events which were a great way to connect with other synagogues and make connections across the NFTY-PAR region. We had a drive-in movie night on October 24 at KI which was very successful. It was the first in-person event for the KIFTY members since March, and it was fantastic to be able to come to KI and see everyone. You can help us in a variety of ways. Delivering meals, groceries and gift cards to KI and community members and assisting in our new HaMotzi Contact Free Drive-Thru Dinners by: • Restocking our pantry to distribute to those in need. • Cooking meals that we freeze and distribute to 150–175 individuals for our monthly Drive-Thru HaMotzi Dinners. Recipes and containers are provided. • Sponsor a dinner to feed 150 guests for $900.00 (does not include groceries) • Donate to KI’s Sharing is Caring Fund to restock the KI Pantry • Look on the KI website for updates and more information The Cheltenham School District contacted Cantor Levy and asked KI to augment their lunch distributions. We will now have periodic grocery distributions at KI for the Cheltenham School District families. We have KI members who have “adopted” a Cheltenham School District family by delivering a toaster oven to a family who only had a hot plate to cook on. Another group of KI members is purchasing a gas stove for this family. Sussman, Ph.D., D.D. how Laurie and I are related to so many. It takes [email protected] / 215.887.8702 research, not just looking at my 36,000 Ancestry Cantor, Amy E. Levy, M.S.M. DNA “close matches” or Laurie’s 19,000. [email protected] / 215.887.8704 Executive Director, Brian Rissinger An Avotaynu quote from four years ago [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 405 seems much easier for me to believe today: “Since Director of Early Childhood Education, Liz Z. Sussman, M.Ed. Ashkenazi Jews had mostly larger families and [email protected] / 215.885.2425, ext. 419 many intermarriages with cousins, the number Membership Engagement Director, Jaimie Abt Shmelzer of fifth cousins will be [less than the 20,000 [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 401 expected in the general population.] We estimate Director/Curator, Temple Judea Museum, Rita Rosen Poley at least 3,500 fifth cousins for each Ashkenazi [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 416 Jew today. With only this number, the probability Librarian, Meyers Library, Ellen Tilman is that for any two Jews, the chances of NOT [email protected] / 215.887.8700, ext. 417 having a relationship is close to zero. This also Youth Engagement Coordinator, Danielle Carlin means that not only are all Ashkenazim related, [email protected] / 215.887.8700 but they are most likely related in multiple ways.” Choir Director/Pastoral Care, Hazzan David Tilman [email protected] / 215.887.8702 I have been glad to help others begin their Organist, Andrew Senn exploration, Ellen Tilman, Joe Davidson, and Amy Rabbi Emeritus, Simeon J. If the child has more matching DNA than a by Jack A. Myers, KI Archivist (email: [email protected]) parent, it is likely that both parents are related to you. The first such example I found was between Having more unstructured time over the Howard Fineshriber and myself. He and I are past several months, because of the inaccessi- related through three different lineages. This is bility of the physical Archives, I have walked evidence that early American Jews found them- and read more. I have also spent time expand- selves facing limited marriage possibilities much ing my family tree, and through Ancestry, like their European parents. This closeness of the exchanging information with other family 19th Century American Jewish communities, members (some distant). With colder weather even within large cities, was demonstrated to me ahead, there will be even more time to explore. as we researched the ancestry of the fifty or so KI families that were recognized for having a century What have I learned? It is clear that because of affiliation. About half of them were related to European Jewish communities were often small my own family. and physically isolated, the marriage pool in which our ancestors lived was such that multiple This brings me back to the nature of my matings occurred amongst small numbers of expanding family tree, archiving the relationships, families. One clue is, family and business ties worked in parallel. The if you have taken a DNA test, if you show a nearly 40,000 names on my tree do not represent higher level of matching with someone than with one of that person’s parents.
