Why Rockets ? a push forward to speed up the rocket. Why are rockets used in space instead of some other kind of engine. What is there about going to other planets or the moon that requires we use rockets? And how and why does a rocket work? A rocket is used to speed Physicists (scientists) use a more elegant way of describing up spacecraft; in other words, the situation. Momentum is defined as the product of mass and they speed up or slow down spacecraft. On Earth, in velocity. everyday life, when we try To give the rocket momentum to speed up something, like us running or moving a car, (speed), one must create we actually push against momentum in the opposite something else. When I start direction. One could just throw to walk or run I push back on the fuel out the back but one the floor, or ground, with my creates greater momentum to shoes and that action causes the rear if we exhaust the fuel the floor, or ground, to push at high speed and one does this forward on me causing me by burning the fuel. The atoms have greater speed at higher to move forward. Similarly, a car’s motor spins the wheels and temperatures. the friction between tire and ground causes the tire to push in the backward direction and the ground reacts and pushes the car Chemical rockets use up their fuel in a couple minutes and forward. You may have heard of the famous physical law first are unsuited for long voyages. NASA is working on developing stated by Isaac Newton “for every action, there is an equal and ION-ROCKETS which use electrical forces to eject ions at opposite reaction”. This means that when you push something, very high speed, hence high momentum using much less fuel. that something pushes BACK on you. In my earlier examples: Someday such high-tech rockets may allow travel to the stars. the tire pushes the ground Nature is exciting! rearward, the ground pushes the © 2020 Dr. David R. Curott, UNA Professor Emeritus car forward; your feet push back on the ground, the ground reacts and pushes you forward. If you push on the wall, it pushes back on you. What does all this have to do with rockets? In space, there is nothing to push against. So the rocket must create something to push against. A rocket burns fuel in a “combustion chamber”. This creates high pressures in the burning gas so the hot gas PUSHES neighboring gas out the rear. That rearward push causes the exhausting gas to PUSH forward on the gases in the combustion chamber rocket.; thus pushing the rocket forward. In other words, by pushing backward on something (the exiting gases) the rocket has created 10 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals March 2020

But another bun-and-beef based option is readily available, and it could stir up nostalgia for comforting family meals of years past. It’s hard to beat the savory flavor and deliciously messy trappings of sloppy Joes. As the name implies, this isn’t a meal for someone who likes to keep things neat. Part of the fun of sloppy Joes, for adults and children alike, is the chance to get a little messy at the dinner table. Here’s a recipe for classic sloppy Joes, courtesy of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Serves 4 1-pound ground beef, 93% lean or leaner 1 cup minced sweet onion 1 cup minced green bell pepper 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) unsalted tomato sauce 1/4 cup barbecue sauce 1/4 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon dry mustard 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns or 8 slider buns Heat a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onion; cook 3 to 5 minutes until golden brown. Add ground beef and bell pepper; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking beef into 1/2-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally. Stir in tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar and mustard; increase heat to medium-high. Bring to a boil; cook 5 to 10 minutes, or until sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, as desired. Divide beef mixture evenly among buns. Top with pickles, coleslaw and cheese, if desired. Close the sandwiches. Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed ground beef. Cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness. March 2020 www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals Kidsville News! 17

As they examined the photographs, it didn’t take long for them to agree on the following: 1. The original owner of the tablet of photographs was a Shoals area man named Walter R. May. 2. The tablet had been purchased on September 4, 1944. 3. Mr. May was a member of the United States military. These two lines in his address were proof: 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry, APO, NY, NY. 4. As a member of the military, Mr. May was stationed at or near Chateau-Thierry from August 30 to September 5, 1944. (They also agreed that it was unusual for Mr. May to be at that place only seven days.) But questions such as these remained: 1. Where is Chateau-Thierry located? 2. Since Mr. May indicated that he was stationed at Chateau-Thierry in 1944, that was during World War II. Was a battle fought there? 3. Since the ten photographs are actually postcards, why did Mr. May not mail them to friends or relatives? So, the local historians who had access to this interesting tablet of photographs/postcards went to work in an attempt to solve the riddles. A quick on-line investigation solved the first question easily. Chateau-Thierry is a small area of France located on the Marne River whose history dates back to at least the 12th century A.D. And there are ruins of a castle there which is thought to have been built in the early part of the eighth century. 18 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals March 2020
