Halloween & COVID-19: Have Fun While Staying Safe Choosing costumes, decorating pumpkins, and getting special treats brings joy to many children at Halloween. Some Halloween traditions may look different this year to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still plenty of ways families can have fun while avoiding the scare of being exposed to or spreading the virus. Most importantly, keep doing what you have been doing: avoiding large gatherings, keeping a distance of six feet from others, wearing cloth face coverings (think superhero!), and washing hands often. Limit exposure by keeping activities in your backyard or opting for virtual gatherings. A few other safety tips: • Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go into a stranger’s house. • Be careful crossing streets and watch for traffic! • Always have an adult with you. • Wait until you get home to eat your candy. Have an adult check your bag before you enjoy any of your treats! • Only visit houses that have their lights on. • Carry a flashlight. • Make sure your costume doesn’t obstruct your view. Also, make sure you can’t trip on the bottom of it! • Never go anywhere with someone that you don’t know. • Be polite and say “thank you”! 342 Cox Blvd. • Sheffield • 256-383-4473 • shoalsprimarycarellc.com October 2020 www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals Kidsville News! 15

Comets years. The most famous comet is Halley's Ancient Comet. It returns every 75-76 years so each generation usually has one chance peoples often to see it, thought the sometimes twice if seen appearance when very young. I saw of a comet it in 1986 and its next was an omen return will be in 2061. or foretelling How old will you be of a great then? It had been seen for event or over 2000 years but no one knew it was the same comet. Then Edmund perhaps a Halley in the 1700s suspected that the comets seen in 1531, 1607 and 1682 were the same disaster. It's only in modern times that they were seen as comet and he predicted its return in 1758. Halley did not live to see natural phenomena and not events to be feared. its return in 1758, but the comet was named for Halley who had What is a comet? What are they made of ? And why do predicted its return. The comet orbits around the Sun, coming they often have a \"TAIL\"? Comets, having a size of a couple in close and then traveling away almost to Pluto's realm before miles, are mostly ice returning. The famous writer Mark Twain and dust with some (born Samuel Clemmons) said in 1909, \"I came in with Halley's rocky material. They Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.\" Twain died on April have been referred to 21, 1910. Many comets orbit as \"dirty snowballs\". the Sun, but some have for periods Far away from the of hundreds of years. Many appear Sun, space is very unexpected, like the comet NEOWISE cold and most gases which was discovered approaching the Sun are frozen. However in March of this year. My friend, Phyllis when a comet gets Nofzinger, sent me this wonderful photo of close to the Sun, the Neowise taken by her friend in California. Sun heats it up and a Comet Neowise could barely be seen in dark skies away from the lights of cities cloud of vapor forms in July and August. Now it has circled around the Sun and is headed out of the solar system, to return in about 7000 around it and the pressure of the Sunlight actually pushes some of the dust and gas away from the Sun and the gas and dust appear to be a \"tail\" as it streams away from the Sun. Notice as the comet leaves the Sun, the tail is actually more in front than in the rear. The Rosetta Spacecraft was launched in 2004 for a ten year travel to Comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P/C-G for short). As you see in this photo taken by Rosetta, the comet was very oddly shaped; probably the result of two bodies colliding and fusing. The unmanned spacecraft orbited the comet and observed gases and dust ejected from the comet as the comet warmed up during its solar approach. In 1992, comet Shoemaker–Levy was seen crashing into the planet Jupiter. Jupiter's enormous gravity ripped the comet apart into many pieces which separately crashed producing a series of enormous explosions as they hit the atmosphere. Comets can be dangerous if they come too close. Nature is amazing! © 2020 Dr. David R. Curott, UNA Professor Emeritus 20 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals October 2020
