This Page Brought To You By: Do you wear glasses to help you see? Making them isn’t as simple as you might think! The parts of glasses that help people see are called lenses. When you get a new pair of glasses, you visit an eye doctor who helps you develop a unique vision profile. Once the doctor has figured out what kind of lenses will be best for you, it’s time to make the glasses. People have been wearing glasses for hundreds of years, but the way we make them has changed over time. Most eyeglass lenses today are made with machines. • Lenses can be made from plastic or glass. • Lenses are either made in bulk or custom-made for the person who will be wearing them. • A lens starts half-finished. It then gets covered in a protective coating in a process called “blocking.” After blocking, the lens is reshaped to fit the needs of the person who will be wearing it. • Lenses need to be polished and carefully cleaned after they have been shaped so that a lens coating can be applied. • For plastic lenses, it is important to coat them after making them. Coating lenses makes them stronger and harder to scratch. A coated lens helps keep your vision clear no matter what. • Finished lenses are inspected to make sure they are ready to wear. After inspection, they’re carefully fitted into frames for the perfect pair of glasses. https://www.zeiss.com/vision-care/us/better-vision/understanding-vision/how-are-eyeglass-lenses-manufactured.html January 2020 www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals Kidsville News! 3

In those years, the name about your teacher and “Normal” was a signal to the public that it was a school for your classmates. the training of teachers. 3. Using a reference The attached program states that May 30, 1927, was source, write a short officially the “Class Day” for students at the school. “Class definition of these Day” was one of the two or three days at the end of the school terms: year during which various events would be held to mark the graduation of the senior class. January 2020 But let’s look at the program to see the kinds of things that occurred on this particular “Class Day”: a. The Girls’ Glee Club sang “Japanese Love Song.” The term “Glee Club” was used in those days to designate a group of students who were trained by a choral music teacher on campus. (Do you suppose that’s how the television program, Glee, got its name?) b. Sara Frances Willingham reviewed the history of the senior class from the time it entered the State Normal School as Freshmen to the day of graduation. (By checking the school’s 1927 yearbook, you will learn that Miss Willingham’s father was the president of the school at that time.) c. Mary Allen Turner appeared on stage as the “Grumbler.” What, do you suppose, was the role of the “Grumbler” on this particular day? Do you think you might be able to go on-line to learn the answer to this question? d. Vertis Dendy read the “Last Will and Testament.” This was a reading of made-up things – some serious, some funny – that each member of the senior class was supposedly leaving behind for a specific member of the next year’s class. e. The graduating class had evidently collected money from its members to present some type of permanent gift to the State Normal School, and it was officially accepted on this day by the president of the school. A really intriguing part of the day was the planting of historical ivy from the home of General Joe Wheeler. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know exactly where the ivy was planted on the campus? And wouldn’t it be exciting if the ivy is still living today? Interestingly, Pond Spring, the home of General Wheeler near Courtland, Alabama, is still open for tours and, at least once per year, plants from the property are sold to the public. “Class Day” ended with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” a song that is now sung all over America at midnight on December 31 to mark the close of one year and the opening of another. 6 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals
