This Page Brought To You By: The whole world relies on water to survive. Not one living organism can live without it. Have you ever wondered where the water you drink, bathe or swim in comes from? Many people get their water from a local watershed. • A watershed is a piece of land that all water must flow through before it reaches a body of water. A watershed guides all water from the surrounding land into a larger body of water, like a lake, river or ocean. Watersheds are everywhere! • Most of the water in a watershed is brought there by gravity. Water rushes downhill into a watershed from places of higher elevation. When it snows or rains, the precipitation runs off into little streams and creeks or is absorbed by the ground. This water steadily makes its way back into larger bodies of water before the whole cycle begins again. • Watersheds vary in size. Some watersheds span hundreds or thousands or even millions of miles. The world’s largest watershed is the basin of the Amazon River, which spans over 2 million square miles. • The largest watershed in America is the Mississippi River watershed. Can you believe that the Mississippi River drains over half of our country’s water and the waters that feed into it? That’s over a million square miles of land in the United States and parts of Canada! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_basin/ https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/watershed.html https://study.com/academy/lesson/watershed-lesson-for-kids-definition-facts.html/ https://www.americangeosciences.org/education/k5geosource/content/water/where-does-our-water-come-from 4 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals February 2020
