The house was in disrepair when General John D. Rather and family of Decatur, Alabama, moved into it in 1864. General Rather’s daughter, Ella, married James T. Kirk. It is this family whose name, along with “Locust Hill,” has been given to the house. 2. Nathan Home, Sheffield: William L. Chambers, general manager of the Sheffield Land Company, had this late Victorian home built. In 1908, Mr. Chambers sold the house to Judge J.H. Nathan. Judge Nathan was the clerk at the first land sales of Sheffield lots in 1883 and was prominent in the affairs of Sheffield until his death. 3.
