Reports show that of the 70 million stray animals in the U.S., 6.5 million of them enter shelters each year. Tags and additional measures to identify cats and dogs greatly increase the chances that lost pets will eventually be reunited with their owners. In fact, such measures can be the most important step pet owners take to ensure the recovery of lost pets. American Humane notes that only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter shelters without tags are reunited with their owners. In addition to tags, pet owners can speak to their veterinarians about microchipping, which involves the insertion of a tiny electronic capsule beneath the animal’s skin that serves a similar function as a tracking device. 8 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals August 2022
