Is it possible to escape the Halloween sugar overload? For those who want to enjoy some healthier options than candy corn and other sweet treats, the following ideas are not so frightening. Pizza Mummy Use slices of toasted sandwich bread or English muffins to make some spooktacular fare. Coat the bread with pizza sauce. Then place thin vertical slices of mozzarella cheese in a haphazard pattern to replicate the gauze look on a mummy. Two pieces of sliced black olives serve as the eyes. Blood Moon KHowever a Lunar Eclipse is perfectly safe to view since you A total eclipse of the moon will occur are viewing the Moon, not the Sun. early in the morning of November 8 and will Although the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow during the total be visible from the Shoals area (Lauderdale & Colbert counties). Although the moon will be eclipse phase, it won’t appear totally black. Some sunlight gets bent in the shadow of the Earth, it will seem very reddish going through the Earth’s atmosphere and illuminates the Moon (thus called a “blood moon”) due to it receiving some faint red very faintly. The Earth’s atmosphere filters out the blue rays (that’s light from the Earth. Except for the time of night, this eclipse is why the sky appears blue) and reddish light reflects off the Moon very similar to the eclipse seen six months ago on May 15. Weather causing it to look reddish, thus described as a “BLOOD MOON”. is always the most important factor in planning to view an eclipse. If the clouds move in; goodbye eclipse. The moon will be totally eclipsed for 1 hour 26 minutes, from 4:16 am till 5:42 am. On average, the Moon is eclipsed twice a year but you might be on the daytime side of the Earth and not see the eclipse. The next total lunar eclipse viewable from the Shoals won’t take place until March 14, 2025. That’s almost 2 ½ years from now so take advantage of this 2022 phenomena if the weather is favorable on November 8. The Earth orbits the Sun. Behind the Earth (opposite the Sun Lunar eclipses occur only during a FULL MOON because only direction) is the shadow of the Earth. The above diagram is looking then is the Moon on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun and from the Earth at the sky away from the Sun. On November 8, can possibly move into the Earth’s shadow. Historically each full 2022, the moon will be moving from lower right to upper left and moon of a month is given a nickname often indicative of the time will enter the Earth’s shadow creating a “Lunar Eclipse”. The of year. Here is a list of Full Moon names. circle labeled UMBRA is the full shadow of the Earth. If the moon is in the UMBRA, the moon is totally eclipsed. The donut labeled PENUMBRA receives some light of the Sun so any part of the moon there is partly illuminated. The moon is moving around the Earth and once a month (actually every 29.5 days) it moves behind the Earth. You might think it would move into the shadow every month but that only happens twice a year on average due to the tilt of the moon’s orbit compared to the Earth’s orbit. In the second drawing below, you can see that sometimes the moon is above the Earth’s orbit and other times below. A solar eclipse, when the Moon moves in front of the Sun, requires special precautions for safe viewing because the Sun is so bright and can burn your eyes when not properly viewed. This November eclipse is a “beaver moon”. Remember to mark it on your calendar! © 2022 Dr. David R. Curott, UNA Professor Emeritus 16 Kidsville News! www.kidsvillenews.com/shoals October 2022

Local History Written by Billy Warren Did You Know? A Chronicle Of The Civil War In The Shoals Do you know the word “chronicle”? If you look it up in a dictionary or on-line, here is what you will find: “a historical account of events arranged in the order in which they took place.” In the April 25, 1965, issue of the Florence Times and Tri-Cities Daily (now known as the Times-Daily), Mr. Louis Eckl, the Editor at that time, published a really interesting insert. (NOTE: An insert in a newspaper is a special publication of several pages on a specific project or event that is inserted into an issue of the newspaper.) Mr. Eckl’s 24-page insert (actually, a chronicle) was devoted entirely to a historical account of the American Civil War as it affected the Shoals area directly. He chose April, 1965, to publish this valuable document because that date marked exactly 100 years since the end of the Civil War after its start four years earlier in 1864. Here are a few of the entries: Local historians – in fact, anyone, including students in local schools who value the history of the Shoals area – owe a big “thank you” to Mr. Louis Eckl for researching and creating a written chronicle of the tragic four years, 1861-1865. SOMETHING TO DO: 1. Using a reference source: a. Write a brief definition of the term, “civil war.” b. In the American Civil War (1861-1865), there were two forces fighting each other. What is the name given to these two forces? c. Name the two Generals who met in Richmond, Virginia, and signed the papers to end the American Civil War. Also included in this valuable insert are separate 2. Which of the entries in Mr. Eckl’s insert that accompany articles about the effects of the Civil War locally, with this month’s column is the most interesting for you? Write at titles such as: ‘U.S. Gunboat Expedition Through least two sentences explaining why you chose it.
