Local History Written by Billy Warren Did You Know? A Chronicle Of The Civil War In The Shoals Do you know the word “chronicle”? If you look it up in a dictionary or on-line, here is what you will find: “a historical account of events arranged in the order in which they took place.” In the April 25, 1965, issue of the Florence Times and Tri-Cities Daily (now known as the Times-Daily), Mr. Louis Eckl, the Editor at that time, published a really interesting insert. (NOTE: An insert in a newspaper is a special publication of several pages on a specific project or event that is inserted into an issue of the newspaper.) Mr. Eckl’s 24-page insert (actually, a chronicle) was devoted entirely to a historical account of the American Civil War as it affected the Shoals area directly. He chose April, 1965, to publish this valuable document because that date marked exactly 100 years since the end of the Civil War after its start four years earlier in 1864. Here are a few of the entries: Local historians – in fact, anyone, including students in local schools who value the history of the Shoals area – owe a big “thank you” to Mr. Louis Eckl for researching and creating a written chronicle of the tragic four years, 1861-1865.
