INTRODUCTIONExpressly Marlborough is a unique pictorial record of life in Marlborough since August1957. In this fifth book we look at Marlborough news in January to April 1958. Laterbooks will cover the remaining months from August 1957.Made possible by permission of The Marlborough Express, this is the fifth of whatwill be a number of books of photographs reproduced from issues of “The Express”since the introduction of an electronic engraver in 1957. This technology replaced theprevious system which involved sending photographs to Wellington and waiting forthem to be sent back. The dramatically improved turnaround time allowed photographsto be taken and published in “The Express” the next day – something we take forgranted now.The Marlborough Express archive contains most of the negatives used for thosephotographs and while many have deteriorated, a large number are as good as the daythey were created some 53 years ago. In a partnership with The Marlborough Expresswe have begun the task of digitizing these images and hence preserving this heritagefor the wider community.Photographs on their own are interesting but of little use as a historical record orresearch tool. In order to make the result attractive and useful to a larger audience wehave also included the text from the original article, which in most cases includes a listof all people in the photograph. As a further research tool, each image is accompaniedby the date it appeared in “The Express”, the page number it appeared on and thenegative number the photograph was derived from. While a few of the photographs are poor quality we elected to include them and theirassociated text to make the resulting work as complete as possible. In some cases thephotograph was reconstructed from the copy in the newspaper. We trust you will forgivethese images in the interests of completeness. Each volume will be fully indexed and at intervals a composite index will bepublished. Go to www.ExpresslyMarlborough.co.nz for more information and details ofhow to obtain copies of any of these photographs. The intention is to publish further volumes at approximately three-monthly intervals. Ifyou would like to be informed when a new volume is available, visit the website whereyou will find a short electronic form you can use to give us your email address.Copies of each volume will be available at the Marlborough Express and some localbooksellers. If you live outside Blenheim and need a copy posted to you, orderingJanuary -April 1958 Expressly Marlborough in the 50’s 3
details are on the website. You will also find copies of all the books for sale onTradeMe - just search for “Expressly Marlborough”. Postage is free in New Zealand ifordered from [email protected] apologise in advance for errors. It is a complex task to bring this informationtogether and with the best will in the world transcription errors will have crept in. Theuse of (sic) after an erroneous entry implies the error is noted, but was in the publishedarticle. We have also chosen to print as much of the original photograph as possible. In manycases the photograph as printed in the paper had been heavily ‘cropped’ to includeonly a portion of the image. With the passage of time, we felt that often the remainderof the photograph was as interesting as the central feature. We hope you enjoy this continuing trip down memory lane and we look forward tobringing you many more treasures in the future. There is a probability that this will be the last book in the series, but if that shouldchange the next published book would be “Expressly Marlborough In the 50’s, Volume3 - 1958” covering May-August 1958.John Penney.4 Expressly Marlborough in the 50’s January -April 1958

LOST PROPERTY Wednesday January 8 1958, Page 6. (373)Lost or abandoned during 1957. 10 bicycles are stacked in a shed behind theBlenheim Police Station waiting for their owners to claim them. All in runningorder, several of them will probably be sold under the auctioneer’s hammer after theexpiration of 12 months in Police hands. In an average year about 100 lost bicyclesfind their way to the Police Station. Most are promptly reported missing and returnedto their owners, while a few stay at the Station several months and some are neverclaimed. Bicycles are lost under all sorts of circumstances, forgetfulness on the partof their owners being probably the main cause. It is particularly common for a personto remove a similar bicycle to their own from a bicycle stand, leaving their own, andthis type of mistake is usually simple enough for the Police to straighten out. Manyof the bicycles taken in Charge by the Police are reported by members of the public.Others which have been abandoned for three or four days on end are removed by thePolice themselves. Some of the machines which are unclaimed are in really good order.Several are fitted with gears, locks and other accessories and practically all havelights. Lost articles other than bicycles are kept for a minimum of three months beforebeing returned to the finders or, if not wanted by the finders, auctioned if of any value.January -April 1958 Expressly Marlborough in the 50’s 29
OWNERS TARDY IN COLLECTING LOST PROPERTY Wednesday January 8 1958, Page 6. (374)All manner of unlikely items find their way to the Station and included among those atpresent in safe keeping are a carpenter’s bag and tools, a racing cyclist’s headgear, anda dagger. Wrist watches are always in stock and handbags and purses, some containingconsiderable sums of money, clutter the office safe. It is surprising the number ofpeople who inquire at the Police Station for lost articles as an afterthought, and alsothe number who do not inquire at all, as witnessed by the number of unclaimed items. The procedure for claiming lost property is simple but extremely thorough. First theloss must be reported and a description of the article given, together with details of thecircumstances under which it was lost. If the description tallies with an article whichhas been found the claimant makes positive identification and signs a receipt. Positiveidentification must be made and if a person wrongfully claims an article which they donot own charges of theft or attempted theft could be preferred.30 Expressly Marlborough in the 50’s January -April 1958

It is a road-roller, but it is powered by a high-performance diesel engine. The makers, an Englishfirm, have stuck to the original design, even to the elongated chimney, which is theexhaust.
