Passive Voice Active Voice In the passive voice, the verb takes an object. When using the active voice, the subjects are the ones OV S performing the action. • All men | are loved | by God. SV O • Nests | are built | by birds. • God | loves |all men. • Birds | build | nests. • Bones | are eaten | by dog. • Dog | eats | bones. In these three sentences the subject does the action. Hence they are in the active voice.

To change an active voice sentence to a passive voice sentence: 1.Make the object of the active sentence into the subject of the passive sentence. 2.Use the verb “to be”. 3.Use the past participle of the main verb. 4.If we want to show the person or thing doing the action we use by.
Simple Tense Present simple = active voice : S+ V1 (s,es) Ex. Richard writes a letter. passive voice: S. + is , am , are + V.3 + by..... Past simple = active voice: S + V2 Ex. Richard is wrting a letter. passive voice : S. + is , am , are + being + V.3 + by.... Past Progressive = active voice: S + was/were + Ving Ex. Richard was writing a letter. passive voice : S. + was being , were being + v.3 + by.... Future Progressive = active voice: S + will / shall + be + Ving Ex. Perfect Tense Present Perfect = active voice : S + have/has + V3 Ex. Richard has written a letter. passive voice: S. + has been , have been + V.3 + by.... Past Perfect = active voice: S + had + V3 Ex. Richard had written a letter. passive voice: S. + had been + v.3 + by.... Future Perfect = active voice: S + will / shall + have + V3 Ex. Richard will have a letter. passive voice: = S. + will have , shall have + been + v.3 + by....
Interrogative sentences If the question in the active voice begins with a helping verb the passive voice must also begin with a suitable helping verb. Supposing the question begins with ‘Wh or How’ form (what, when, how ...) the Passive Voice must begin with the same. Active Voice Passive Voice Are you writing a letter?
