SUTAN PUASA, THE FOUNDER OF KUALA LUMPUR (1822-1908) THE MALAY HOUSE OF CHOW KIT ROAD 125
126 THE MALAY HOUSE OF CHOW KIT ROAD
THE LIFE OF SUTAN PUASA (1822 – 1908) Sutan Puasa was also known as Sutan Naposo who hailed from Kota Nopan, Tobang, Mandailing Julu in the province that is now known as Mandailing- Natal Regency also located next to the province of Minangkabau, in Western Sumatra. He was born in 1822 during the Padri War. The Padri War that began in 1803 to 1845 was a civil war between Minangkabau people which were somehow influenced by Wahhabi religious teachings and beliefs. They made the decision to invade the northern state where the Mandailing people lived, with the intention to convert them into following their beliefs of Islam. Many of the Mandailing were already muslims, but followed the Islamic teachings of Islam “beradat” (Islam following customary traditions). The Padris learned their religious knowledge after performing Hajj in Makkah, where they had continued their stay to learn more about the religion. They were inspired by the teachings and wished to implement their learnings in the islamic way of life of the Mandailing people. The Mandailing people were strong followers of their customary law’s or known as adat. The clash of beliefs was deadly and caused great economic hardship to the people of the state. It ended with the intervention of the Dutch. The Dutch later colonized the area and began their unpopular reign as a coloniser which had caused greater hardship to the people. Sutan Puasa was from a noble family of the Mandailing under the Lubis clan. There are several clans associated with the Mandailing sect, namely Pulungan, Nasution, Lubis, Matondang, Rangkuti, Batubara, Marbun, Harahap, Dalimunthe, THE MALAY HOUSE OF CHOW KIT ROAD 127
Hutasuhut, Siregar, Hasibuan, Daulay, Pane, Pohan. Sutan Puasa was the uncle of Sutan Mangatas also known as Haji Jaafar Sutan Sinomba. The movement of the people from the greater Nusantara (namely current day Indonesia), traditionally known Dutch East Indies, were due to the migrant networks taking advantage of the absence of boundaries delineating the boarders of the territories. In the case of Malaya, many of the Malay were from the present day Indonesia such as the Bugis, Bayanese, Javanese and Sumatrians which included migrants from Minangkabau, Mandailing, Rawa and Kerinci. Sutan Puasa passed away in 14 August 1908 and was burried in the muslim cemetary in Ampang. He was 86 years old. 128 THE MALAY HOUSE OF CHOW KIT ROAD
