THE COLLEGE REMEMBERS... The College Remembers The President and Council note the passing of several outstanding Fellows in 2017 Emeritus Professor Mark Jolly AM DDSc (Sydney) FRACDS 9th September 1923 - 10th May 2017 The 1949 University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry yearbook for graduating students includes the following entry for Mark Jolly: “Mark can be envied for his precision, be the problem a gold foil or the knot in his tie. The owner of an immaculate prosthetics kit, he is always ‘steaming’ someplace – to a patient, a lecture or to Saturday tennis.” 50 years later, in 1999, Prof Mark Jolly received the Award of Merit of the Sydney University Dental Alumni Society at the reunion of the 1949 graduating year. His acceptance speech notes include the following: “We, of 1949 received a wonderful training … and that training admitted us to a fine profession and that, in turn, gave us a trusted and honourable place in our community, and we have enjoyed these benefits for a full 50 years. Half a century!” Mark grew up in Guildford, Sydney and attended Parramatta High School and the University of Sydney. He attained the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1949, Master of Dental Surgery in 1953 and Doctor of Dental Science in 1965. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 1965, and in the same year was appointed McCaughey Professor of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery, the University of Sydney. In 1982 he was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia for services to dentistry. As well as his significant achievements as a researcher, teacher and administrator, Mark was a mentor to colleagues and, above all, dedicated to providing the best possible care for his patients. His former student and colleague, Dr Robert Mitchell, writes “Prof Jolly was a fine, decent and Christian man who treated all around him with equal respect and this was especially true of his patients who all held him in the highest regard. He was also revered by his colleagues across all fields of dentistry and medicine.” Mark married Adrienne Pamela Hill (always known as Pam) in 1957, and they had two daughters, Suzanne and Roslyn. Sabbaticals took them first to Chicago and London, then several times to the Welsh National School of Medicine and Dentistry in Cardiff, Wales. Mark loved gardening and built the garden at the family home in Roseville from scratch. He was also an avid antiques collector. In the last few years of their 47-year marriage, Mark cared for Pam who developed Alzheimer’s Disease and died in 2004. Emeritus Prof Mark Jolly, AM, passed away peacefully at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney on 10 May 2017, at the age of 93. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne and Roslyn, their husbands Peter and Simon, and three granddaughters – Stephanie, Christina and Alice.
