Governance Beyond 2020 ‘’So what are the proposed changes?’’ The Board (formerly Council) is smaller with 8 Directors elected by the membership and 2 appointed Directors. The emphasis will be on a ‘skill-based’ Board. The Board will be supported by an Advisory Council - a larger group whose composition reflects the whole College community and makes recommendations to the Board. Advisory Council membership would include all Regional Committee Chairs, Boards of Studies Chairs, Trainee representative, recent Members/ Fellows, Life and Indigenous members). ‘’What are the benefits for the members?’’ A smaller skill-based Board, meeting more frequently will have the expertise and agility to respond to issues quickly and ensure strategic decision-making for the College. The Advisory Council will give a greater voice to the diverse groups that make up our College. The membership will have a clear conduit to raise ideas and bring issues forward. ‘’When will this happen?’’ You have plenty of time to consider the changes. Membership will be consulted about the draft changes to the Consititution in mid 2019. Changes will be put to a membership vote at the 2019 AGM. If successful, the new governance structure would come into effect from Nov 2020. COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2019 3

He has worked as an Oral and Maxillofacial House Surgeon at Waikato Hospital for been awarded to the candidate the last two years. with the highest marks with outstanding proficiency at the Why did you decide to undertake the RACDS Primary Primary Examination. Examinations? Sitting the RACDS Primary Examinations were a natural step forward for me as I have always intended to specialise. It’s a great opportunity to get back to the books and a stepping stone towards applying for specialties or preparing for further study. Previous candidates have always spoken highly of the course and that, while challenging, it was valuable and relevant to daily practice. Do you have any tips for candidates who are studying for the RACDS Primary Examinations? Getting started can be overwhelming at first as there is a lot of content to cover. The Orientation Course held mid-year is an excellent place to start as it gives a lot of direction for what's important. After that, the difficult part was finding time to chip away at it all. I found it challenging to juggle work, on-call, and my personal life. The most reliable time I had to study was before work! My main tip is to make a planner to lay out how best to cover all the subjects. It’s not an exam you can cram that easily. What are your plans for the future? 2019 has got off to a tough start for my family. As such, I am currently taking the year off to spend time with and care for a family member. In the future I hope to specialise in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Any last comments? I will be forever surprised and honoured to receive the Christensen Prize for 2018. There were plenty of other candidates I’ve studied with and learned from along the way. This prize would not have been possible without my family, girlfriend, and colleagues at Waikato Hospital supporting and encouraging me. 32 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2019
