WeLCOMe As mentioned in the previous Newsletter, one of the important priorities of this Council term is to enhance members’ benefits, values and privileges through strengthening of education delivery. One of these initiatives is by way of on-line learning-CPD accessible by members in different geographic locations. The first phase of online learning is expected to be launched at Convocation in April. in addition, the creation of the new Centre for Learning, education and Research is now complete with the installation of high quality audio-visual equipment. This Centre will provide excellent facilities to further support educational activities for the College membership. Striving towards strategic goals Over the last few months we have seen major development and progress towards meeting the 2013-2016 strategic plan goals, with work being conducted by the education team on defining the roles of examiners and providing a clear set of criteria and pathway for application to be an examiner, new College wide policies for special Consideration in Assessment as well as Reconsideration Review and Appeal, proposals for CPD points to be allocated to examiners and supplementary reports for the Australian Dental Council and Australian Medical Council to meet the nationally legislated education standard regulations. [in foCuS] aSia To those outside of Asia, it’s easy to see the region as one area for which you can have a universal RACDs business strategy. The reality is that far more effort is required and greater cross cultural issues across Asian nations exist than you might first expect. This diversity, coupled with the need to support existing Members and Fellows with ongoing professional development in Asia, provides the College with an interesting challenges and opportunities. The College Council is strategically keen to see that all members and potential members throughout Asia have the opportunity to access core College activities, such as Members of the Asia Regional Committee with the speakers at the Annual the Primary exam and other professional development scientific Meeting. The Asia Regional Committee today continues to support local candidates with a series of revision courses in preparation for the Primary examination. The courses held in October and November 2013 focused on Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Microbiology. The majority of local candidates attended the courses and all expressed positive feedback that the courses were extremely beneficial. Thanks to the invited speakers Drs George Tipoe, Michael Ho, J. This was an excellent opportunity lecturing in the United States of America for further collaboration on patient management and insights in to the best management and potential future developments. in september last year, Associate Professor Andrew Heggie was invited to attend as visiting professor at the Craniofacial A/Prof Andrew Heggie is the Head, Oral & Maxillofacial unit at Boston Children’s Hospital by the Chief, Division of surgery unit, The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne, Plastic surgery, Professor John Meara. President of the Australian & New Zealand Association of Oral During the week-long visit Professor Heggie attended ward & Maxillofacial surgeons and is on the RACDs Board of studies rounds and clinics interacting on issues relating to cleft and for Oral & Maxillofacial surgery and is the current Chair of the craniofacial anomalies. He delivered a lecture on “skeletal examinations Committee (OMs). correction in craniofacial microsomia”. His visit provided an opportunity to discuss the management of this relatively common craniofacial condition in an institution where much of the clinical research regarding the protocol and management of this patient group has been developed and adopted worldwide. it was pleasing to note that the outcomes delivered by Professor Heggie’s unit at The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne were regarded as of the highest quality. The Oral and Maxillofacial surgery Training Programme within the Harvard Medical school also invited him to deliver their monthly “Grand Rounds” lecture to the faculty in the “ether Dome” of the Massachusetts General Hospital. A/Professor Andrew Heggie Professor Heggie presented on “upper airway obstruction in the paediatric patient: a surgical challenge” on Wednesday 4 september. A further invitation was received by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Boston university to deliver a “Grand Rounds” lecture, again on Wednesday 4 september 2013, entitled “Treatment strategies for total skeletal correction in craniofacial patients from birth to adulthood”. Following the Boston visit, Professor Heggie attended the biennial conference of the international society of Craniofacial surgery in Jackson, Wyoming and presented a paper on the management on craniofacial microsomia. 14 College neWSissue #04 2014

THe COLLeGe ReMeMBeRs... Richard King 1924 - 2013 Dr Leonard Ryder Dr King passed away on October 16, 2013 at Dunedin Hospital; 1931 - 2013 aged 89 years. A foundation member of the Royal Australasian Len died peacefully on 9 December College of Dental surgeons, he became President (1986-1988) 2013 after months of illness. and was awarded Honorary Life Fellowship in 1989.
