CIC CENSOR-IN-CHIEF DR WARREN SHNIDER At the Council Meeting in November 2016, I brought to the director's attention the need to critically review the Education Board. I noted that there is an immediate need to investigate the purpose, function, responsibilities, structure and composition of the current Board. To that end the Council made a resolution to form an Education Governance Working Party to investigate these issues. A Working Party was formed with the following members: Dr Patrick Russo (President) Dr Warren Shnider (Censor-in-Chief) Prof Ian Meyers (Council, Chair of Working Party) Dr Chris Callahan (Council) A/Prof Debbie Cockrell (External appointment) Mr Haldor Aamot (Director of Education) Ms Rachel Introna (Examinations & Assessment Officer (SDP) The Education Governance Working Party shall consider the following expectations of Council: • The need to develop an overall education strategy aligned with RACDS vision, mission and values • The need to develop an overarching Education and Examination Framework (EEF) across all disciplines • The need to develop online Learning and Examinations in line with best practice The Working Party has met twice since the November 2016 Council meeting and Prof Ian Meyers has provided an interim report to the Council at the February 2017 meeting. The scope of Working Party: • The Working Party reviewed the Terms of Reference, as provided, and noted that the main aim was to conduct an overall review of the education governance of the College with the objective of determining what is required to govern the educational (including examination and assessment) aspects of the College in a holistic and succinct manner on behalf of Council. • The Working Party reviewed the existing governance structure of the College, the various programmes within the College and the role of the current Education Board. • The Working Party discussed the need to develop an overarching Education and Examination Framework (EEF) across all disciplines, and how this would be possible and could be implemented, given some of the existing educational frameworks within the current programmes being offered. • The Working Party noted that a number of other Colleges and organisations with multiple educational programs, in particular the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Australasian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP), have been through the process of Educational Governance Review, and it was suggested that looking at the process undertaken by these Colleges may provide a guide or framework to assist the RACDS Educational Governance Working Party in developing the EEF. I thank the working party on their expediency and efficiency of their work thus far and I look forward to the next progress report at the July Council meeting. 12 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2017

Dr Sarah Ting and I attended on behalf of the College. Along with many dignitaries, we battled the Wellington wind and enjoyed being part of this ceremony on an important day for all New Zealanders. Her Excellency spoke of the importance of the Tiriti o Waitangi, Treaty of Waitangi, and how this helped to unite our country 177 years ago. The Tiriti o Waitangi, when originally translated into Maori from English, resulted in different meanings in each document around governorship and sovereignty. When I thought about this in regards to the RACDS it made me realise how important our constitution and all College documents are when we have to encompass the needs and wants of our Dr Erin Mahoney, NZ Prime Minister Bill English, Dr Sarah Ting Fellows and Members from many different countries. As the College moves forward, complexities will develop between the needs of the countries of our Fellows and Members and we must ensure we remove any ambiguity and minimise ‘translation’ differences between New Zealand, Australia and all the countries now involved in the RACDS. I found it very humbling to see all these deserving people who give of their time to help others and are rarely recognised. Our Prime Minister Mr Bill English and Her Excellency Dame Reddy spent a lot of time talking to as many people as they could. Community Engagement SUGARY DRINKS The College supports the New Zealand Dental Association’s (NZDA) Consensus Statement on Sugary Drinks. Dr Tom Butchard from Auckland, attended the discussions on behalf of Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons held at NZDA House in November 2016. The recent launch of the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) led Consensus Statement on Sugary Drinks shows both the value in working collaboratively, as well as the development of a wider range of strategies to reduce sugary drink consumption. Sugary drinks are unique in that they have no nutritional value, they contribute empty calories and replace healthier beverage options. They are also extremely acidic. The NZDA recommends that adults and children switch sugary drinks to water. To reduce the intake of sugary drinks, a range of actions by government, beverage industry, schools, non-government organisations and others are urgently needed. The approach focuses on seven strategies; 1) Joint advocacy campaign aimed a Government and the beverage industry to introduce a sugar icon on the packaging of all sugary drinks to indicate the amount of sugar in each product in teaspoons. 2) Introduction of mandatory regulation of marketing of sugary drinks to children through independent monitoring and evaluation of food marketing, especially at times and places frequented by children such as children’s sports and events. 3) Introduction of daily allowance for the intake of free sugars for New Zealanders, in line with the recommendations from the WHO. 4) Encourage the public to switch their sugary drinks to water by; a) Introduction of warning labels linking overconsumption of sugary drinks to poor health b) Expansion of successful nation-wide social marketing campaigns such as ‘Switch to Water’. 5) Encourage schools and early learning services to adopt ‘water-only’ policies 6) Development of policies by local government to introduce ‘water-only’ policies at council venues, events, and limit the sale of sugary drinks in and around schools. 7) Joint advocacy campaign, aimed at government, to introduce an excise tax on sugary drinks consistent with WHO guidelines. The Consensus Statement is endorsed by the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons For further information visit: www.racds.org/sugarydrinks 20 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2017 20 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2017

SUTHERLAND PRIZE The Kenneth J.G. Sutherland Prize is awarded to the candidate who has gained the highest marks in Part I General Dentistry of the Final Examination and who, in the opinion of the Board of Examiners, had demonstrated eminence in the elective section of the Examination. The prize consists of a medal and a monetary award of $500. The 2017 Sutherland Prize was awarded to Dr Joshua Ch’ng of Victoria. Dr Joshua Ch'ng says... My name is Joshua Ch’ng and I sat the FRACDS Final Examinations in 2017. I’d like to briefly share about my journey in completing the FRACDS program. I graduated in 2013 from the University of Melbourne and have been working in private practice since. Like many, my reasons for undergoing the FRACDS program were varied and included: leaving open the option for further post-graduate studies, improving in my knowledge and skills as a general dentist, as well as becoming a part of the RACDS. After DR JOSHUA CH'NG completing the program these expectations were not only met but far exceeded. One aspect of the program which was striking to me was the emphasis on learning about the RACDS values of professionalism, the lifelong pursuit of excellence, integrity and altruism. These really resonated with me and fuelled my motivation to study hard, and make me proud to be part of both the College and the dental profession. Completion of the program has improved my confidence as a clinician and given me the assurance that I am giving quality care to my patients, in knowing that my clinical decisions are based on current best evidence. I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to be awarded the Kenneth JG Sutherland prize for 2017. This would not have been possible without the help of many including my family, friends and in particular my church community who have encouraged me in my journey especially during times of exam stress. I’d like to thank the RACDS for providing all of us candidates with excellent programs including the Final Exam Workshop (FEW), web- based education modules, and state branch-run workshops which were an immense help in our preparation. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded colleagues in the Melbourne FRACDS study group including Mike, Vish, Catherine and Errol. In many ways, completing these exams was a team effort; we complemented each other in our strengths and weaknesses, and provided much needed company as the only ones studying during the festive months of December and January! Lessons I learnt which helped me to successfully complete the FRACDS program include humility in recognising my limitations, seeking help from others, constantly striving to improve, avoiding complacency, developing an organised approach to studying, working hard and consistently. While I’m not sure what the future holds for me, I am excited about improving as a clinician as well as being an active member of the College and dental profession. I would highly recommend the FRACDS program to all general dentists and can say that I am a totally different dentist after completing this program. CHRISTENSEN PRIZE The Christensen Prize is awarded to the candidate with the highest marks in the Primary Examination. The prize consists of a medal and monetary award of $500. The 2016 Christensen Prize was awarded to Dr Samuel Shaw of Western Australia. Dr Samuel Shaw says... Completing the 2016 Primary Examinations was a big challenge after close to two years away from textbooks and lectures. I attended the Orientation Course in Sydney in July. At this course, the knowledge expected was made clear and the necessary materials provided. It also became clear that sitting the Primary Examinations required a substantial dedication to study. Over the following months I spent many late nights and lunch breaks learning and revising, which ultimately culminated in a stressful two-week examination period. While the exams were challenging, they have also reinforced and filled gaps in my DR SAMUEL SHAW knowledge and have created a solid foundation for further study. I was surprised and honoured to have received the F.G. However, it provides candidates with a great opportunity to apply basic health sciences into daily clinical work. You also make great friends along the way and the RACDS office was always very helpful with any enquiries. Some advice for future candidates - think critically about the lecture material and you will perform well on the exam. Rote learnt answers can only take you so far. Dr Andy Wong (Hong Kong) Good preparation is always the key to sucess to any kind of exam. Good strategy and planning are essential for exam preparation. EXAM My way of preparing exam can be concluded in three words: Reading, Understanding and Memorising. Reading is the first step. It is about gathering and reading through all material required for exam. The material in the Orientation Course is so adequate to pass the exam. However, to be well prepared, I also referred to some reading on the recommended lists especially for the anatomy. Understanding takes the longest time for me. After reading through all the material, it is then time to understand and integrate and link the information. If you can figure out the similarities and differences of different concepts, it is not difficult to memorise the information. It is because you have already processed the information. Memorising is the final step. It is true that exams require short-term memory rather than a long-term one. It is important that you can write and present the information that you understand and learnt during the exam. Therefore, to me, the weeks before the exam, are the \"golden time\" to memorise the information. Of course, questions in the past papers provide us with important clues as to what is very likely to be asked in the future exam. Last but not least, preparing for exams should not be done alone. Invite some of your friends to study together and form study groups. So, get ready and enjoy the Primary Exam! 24 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2017 24 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 01 2017
