OPENING OF THE DR BRIAN DOOLEY EDUCATION CENTRE On Friday 18 November following the College’s Annual General Meeting, a gathering of Board Members, Fellows and Members, the CEO and College staff celebrated the re- opening and renaming of the College’s Education Centre. The Education Centre, now known as the Dr Brian Dooley Education Centre is equipped with state of the art technology to ensure that the College remains efficient and reliable in the delivery of online education as it becomes increasingly popular. Dr Brian Dooley was an inaugural Fellows of the College. He completed his Bachelor of Dental Sciences in Melbourne in 1949 followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery at Northwestern University (Chicago) in 1952. He held notable positions which included Honorary Dental Surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital, Senior Dental Demonstrator at Melbourne Dental School, as well as Secretary and later Chair of the Dental Health Education Committee with the ADA Victorian Branch. The new President, Dr Susan Wise officially opened the room and revealed a plaque in Dr Dooley’s honour. Board Member Profiles Dr Susan Wise President Susan is a Specialist Periodontist in suburban Melbourne. She was the Chair of the Organising Committee for the 2022 RACDS Conference and chaired the RACDS Education Policy Committee. Susan is a Past President of the ADAVB and Co-Chairs the Australian Dental Health Foundation Victoria Committee. Susan has demonstrated to and examined postgraduate and undergraduate students in periodontics. She received her MRACDS (Perio) in 2011 and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Susan is the recipient of the 2021 ADA Valuable Service Award. Susan was elected to the Board in 2018. Dr Erin Mahoney Vice-President Erin is a Specialist Paediatric Dental Consultant at Hutt Valley District Health Board in Wellington, New Zealand. Erin was awarded her FRACDS in 2002 and MRACDS (Paed) in 2008. Erin has worked as a specialist for many years in NZ and Australia and is involved in research and clinical practice. Erin has examined in the Fellowship and Membership for the College for over 9 years and has been the Chair of the RACDS NZ Committee for 5 years. Erin was elected to the Board in 2018. A/Prof John Boucher AM John has had a career-long involvement in dental education and assessment. He has been a teacher and examiner at the University of Melbourne for the past 40 years, an examiner for the Australian Dental Council for 26 years and more recently an examiner for the MRACDS for the past 6 years. John is a past president of the Dental Practice Board of Victoria and the Notifications Committee of the Dental Board of Australia. John is a past president of the Australian Dental Council. John was elected to the Board in 2020. Dr Dale Gerke Dale has been a College Fellow (GDP) for over thirty years, and more recently, a Specialist Member in prosthodontics. He has 50 years’ experience in general and prosthodontic dentistry and is also involved in a number of varied businesses. He was the Chair of the SA/NT Regional Committee for four years. Dale is now providing his professional experience and knowledge to the RACDS Board, as well as offering business expertise to others. Dale was elected to the Board in 2022. Dr Dimitra Mersinia Dimitra has been serving in public and private practice since arriving in Australia. While she has been contributing to teaching in universities, research in neuroscience, and in multiple Committees in the ADA, she has also been actively involved with the College since 2008. She has experienced the journey of a candidate, a facilitator, mentor, examiner, Regional Committee member, A/Registrar and Chair of the Candidate Advisors Committee. Dimitra combines skills from her previous life in the corporate and the medico legal world. Dimitra was elected to the Board in 2022. 7 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 02 2022

2022 - 2024 Dr Hugh Trengrove MNZM Hugh completed his undergraduate and postgraduate dental education at Otago University.  He is currently working in a clinical leadership role as Service Clinical Director for Hospital & Specialist Dentistry in Auckland.  Hugh is a Fellow by Examination (1993), is a past examiner for the Fellowship Examinations and has been a RACDS Board Member for two terms (2014-2018).  Hugh has held various roles in the NZDA, NZ Defence Force and the public sector. Hugh was elected to the Board in 2022. Dr Robin Whyman Robin is Chief Medical and Dental Officer and dental specialist at Te Whatu Ora Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand. He has been clinical director at several New Zealand hospitals, Chief Dental Officer for the Ministry of Health and was on the New Zealand Dental Council for 10 years, including 3 years as Chair. Robin was a College Board Member from 2010-2014 and has been a member of NZ Regional Committee and the Board of Studies in Dental Public Health. Robin is a member of the NZ Institute of Directors. Robin was elected to the Board in 2022. Dr Barbara Woodhouse Barbara gained fellowship by examination in 1984 and then FRACDS(OMS) in 1990, for which she subsequently examined. She has previously served on RACDS council and multiple Committees, and for 15 years as a consultant at Royal Brisbane and Princess Alexandra Hospitals. She is now full time in private specialist OMS practice, serves on various hospital medical advisory and peri-operative Committees and remains active in undergraduate, graduate and post graduate dental and medical education. Barbara was elected to the Board in 2020. Dr Shiu-Yin (Rony) Cho Dr Cho is a specialist paediatric dentist in Hong Kong. He gained Fellowship by examination in 1994. He has served in different posts in the Asia Regional Committee since 2009 and is now an active member of the newly formed Hong Kong Regional Committee. Rony is the chairman of the specialty board in Paediatric Dentistry in Hong Kong, responsible for the training and assessment of trainees undertaking the training pathway to become a specialist paediatric dentist. He is also a part time clinical teacher in the Faculty of Dentistry in HKU, taking part in the clinical training of students from the Master’s programme. Rony was appointed to the Board in 2021. Mr Tony Evans Tony has extensive business, financial and corporate governance experience in the health, aged care, education, membership, insurance, property, government and not-for-profit sectors. He has been a member of various boards including the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the Australian Dental Council. Tony has a Bachelor of Business degree and a postgraduate Diploma in Education, and he is a Fellow of CPA Australia, the Governance Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Honorary CollegeACADEMIC AWARDS AND PRIZES Awards Life Fellowship The award of Life Fellowship is the highest level of recognition that the College can bestow. It is awarded to a Fellow or Member who has demonstrated an exceptional contribution of service to the College. The following Fellows were recently awarded Life Fellowship for their long and significant contribution to the advancement of the College in a broad range of areas: A/Prof Warren Shnider, Drs Suzanne Hanlin and Albert Lee. Read on to find out more on Dr Lee... Dr Albert Lee Albert graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1984 and a member of Asia Pacific Working Party and had served on the obtained his RACDS Fellowship in 1992 by examination. As a new Board of Studies, GDP and Paediatric Dentistry. College Service Award The College Service Award was introduced earlier this year and we are pleased to announce that three exceptional members have been recognised for their work by their Regional Committee peers. Congratulations to Drs Amanda Phoon Nguyen and Dina Papas, both from Perth, and to Dr Claudia Yung from Melbourne. Thank you for supporting the College the way you do. Dr Dina Papas Graduating from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Dental Science in 1989, Dina immediately commenced work in private dental practice in Perth. Since 1993 she continues to work at the Osborne Park Dental Clinic of which she became sole proprietor in 2004. In 1995 she gained admission as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the General Dental Practice field. Dina joined the WA Regional Committee in 2010 during which time Perth held the 20th College Convocation, the first to be held in WA. Since 2011, Dina has been Treasurer of the WA Committee, a position which to which proudly continues to contribute to today. Dr Claudia Yung Dr Claudia Yung completed her Bachelor of Dental Science at The University of Melbourne in 1997. She started her dental career in Moe as an intern and spent most of her time in regional Victoria before setting her own private practice in Lilydale in 2003. Dr Yung obtained her Fellowship in GDP in 2004. Dr Yung has been serving the RACDS Vic/Tas Regional Committee since 2010. She was the treasurer and secretary and Chair from 2014 to 2017 and 2017 to 2021 respectively. She was also on the RACDS Organising Committee for the 2022 Convocation – The Fine Edge of Dentistry. Dr Yung is currently working in her private practice in Lilydale and as a clinical supervisor in General Practice at Melbourne University for final year dental students. She is also an examiner for MRACDS and continues to serve the Vic/Tas Regional Committee as a co-oped member. Dr Amanda Phoon Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen is well known to many of our readers as the honorary College News Editor since 2018, a member of the College’s Oral Medicine Board of Studies, a mentor, Secretary of the WA Regional Committee, and a presenter at the recent Fine Edge of Dentistry conference. The College’s premier event, The Fine Edge of Dentistry, formerly the 25th RACDS Convocation, was held between Thursday, 8 and Saturday 10 September 2022. The event was co-hosted with the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ANZAOMS) and represented a unique opportunity for general and specialty dentists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons to benefit from the dynamic and thought-provoking scientific program. Our theme ‘bringing dentistry disciplines together for optimal patient care’ was woven throughout the Conference and fosters our mission to provide an educational home for dentists at all stages of their careers. For those unable to travel to Melbourne, the scientific program was offered as a hybrid event. International speaker, Charlotte Stillwell, an acclaimed prosthodontist based in London head-lined the impressive list of speakers at the event. The Opening Ceremony and President's Welcome Reception was held at the President, Prof Ian Meyers OAM and Professor Melbourne Town Hall and was the first event of the Conference. There were over James Angus AO, the Lieutenant-Governor of 250 in attendance including the friends and families of the 83 Inductees and Award Victoria Winners. Our guest of honour was Professor James Angus AO who provided the Opening Address. PAST PRESIDENT’S LUNCHEON A special event where Past Presidents, along with the current President come together to enjoy lunch on the first day of the Scientific Program is held each Convocation. COLGATE EMERGING LECTURE AWARD A total of 30 applications were received which was the highest number since the award was introduced. The high standard of the applications resulted in a challenging task for the convenors to choose just seven to present at the conference. The presentations were varied, some interactive and others very technical in subject matter, but all were interesting and engaging. The winner of the Award was Dr Trudy Lin who was received AUD $2850 care of Colgate. Read more about Dr Lin on page 36. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS Student volunteers from Melbourne and La Trobe Universities generously donated their time to assist with some of the customer service aspects of the event. In return, they enjoyed hearing the lectures and meeting with Fellows and Members, some of whom they may come across in their careers. We hope lasting impressions of the College were formed, and some become members in the coming years. Dr Weber Huang NSW/ACT RSC Education Coordinator & Secretary / Supervisor of Training The NSW/ACT Training Centre (Westmead, Prince of Wales, John Congratulations to Andrew Watkins, Anthony Febbo, James Hunter, Canberra) met as a group in November for the annual Clohessy (pass in 2021), Michael Qiu, Ashim Adhikari, Alan Samakeh, Statewide audit. The trainees had much to celebrate with five Paul Jung and Miles Somers. Well done! trainees successfully passing the Fellowship Examination this year and two trainees passing the SST exam. Our largest trainee group The NSW/ACT Training centre would also like to thank our dear ever! friend and colleague, Prof Hedley Coleman. Prof Coleman will move full-time into a private pathology laboratory. He has been a friend and mentor to all the trainees and consultants over the last 20 years. Prof has been given a lifetime award for his dedication, time, knowledge and expertise in educating the OMS specialty. He always approaches everything with passion and a great sense of humour. Thank you Prof Coleman.
