COURSE FEW RACDS Final Examination Workshop 2016 review Dr Errol Kilov (BDS., Grad Cert. Dentistry, MRACDS, ADC) Achieving Fellowship with RACDS is a respected recognition in the Dentistry profession. However, it can be quite daunting when attempting to grasp the expected depth and width of knowledge required for success in the examination. I attended the Final Examination Workshop in 2016 at Westmead Hospital with the hope that it would demystify these requirements. The Final Examination Workshop certainly achieved that. In its design, the workshop creates a platform to share the expectations of the examiners and clarifies what it means to be at ‘Fellowship’ level of RACDS. My experience was that it was invaluable in preparing candidates for potential success in the examination and beyond. The course was motivating for me. To spend a weekend with examiners and colleagues who share a passion of lifelong learning and striving for excellence was inspiring. The selfless commitment and professionalism of the presenters and examiners was evident throughout the two days. I feel that the Final Examination Workshop is not only an essential step in the pathway towards potential success in the Final examination, but it is also an opportunity for professional growth as a stand-alone workshop. RACDS Orientation Course 2016 review OC Dr Phillip Goh BDSc (Hons) I attended the RACDS Primary Orientation Course in July this year, and found the course to be both a comprehensive and also enjoyable exposition of the curriculum of understanding required for the Primary Examinations. The Primaries are an important pathway to both acceptance into specialist training, and also recognition of substantial study and achievement, culminating in Fellowship in General Dental Practice with the College. Having graduated from my undergraduate university degree in 2013, I enrolled for the Primaries in order to progress my education and professional development as a dentist. The Primary Orientation Course covers the undergraduate dental curriculum in the areas of anatomy, pathology, biochemistry, histology, physiology, microbiology and pharmacology, and does so in a comprehensive and detailed manner. The course was held in Sydney at Moore Theological College, and catered for at The Women’s College - the facilities and food provided was excellent. The highlight of the program was the speakers who were all exceptionally knowledgeable in their subject material, and also friendly and accessible. Moreover, the lectures were presented in a comprehensive and engaging manner, and the study notes complete. Complex concepts that I had previously struggled with at University were well discussed and explained. While much study lies ahead of me, I feel that attending the Orientation Course has equipped me well to study and attend for the examinations later this year. I would highly recommend dentists consider attending the RACDS Primary Orientation Course if they are interested in a comprehensively structured program to further improve their knowledge and skills as general dental practitioners, and to do so in a wonderful collegiate atmosphere. 1818 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 03 2016OLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 03 2016 C
REVIEWS RACDS CPD Masterclass 2016 reviews RACDS held its last CPD Masterclass for 2016 on the 16th and 17th of September at the Melbourne Dental Hospital. The modules covered included: • Medical Emergencies presented by Mr Ian Cash, • Clinical Examination Technique and Dental Imaging presented by Dr Louise Brown • Viva voce preparation presented by Professor David Manton. Two attendees of the Masterclasses share their experiences below – CPD Review from Dr James Cooke On September 16th and 17th, the College held the masterclass courses for both Medical Emergencies and Clinical Examination Techniques and Diagnostic Imaging at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. Firstly, was Medical Emergencies given expertly by Mr Ian Cash. His extensive experience as a critical care nurse provided the participants with unique real life scenarios to work through and discuss. His seemingly endless energy and class questions certainly kept us on our toes throughout the day. We also had the opportunity in the afternoon to practice our updated skills on the dummies provided for CPR training. The morning of the second day was set aside for Clinical Examination Techniques and Diagnostic Imaging. Dr Louise Brown provided another informative presentation covering a wide range of radiographic techniques and images. The class was very interactive and Dr Brown gave all sorts of examples of normal anatomy and pathology for the group to diagnose and discuss at length. Thanks must go to the presenters for their time and professional presentations. Review from Dr Rosalind Peart The CPD Masterclasses were, as always, very informative, covering the topics comprehensively. Being directed to other references and sources of information is always very helpful. The presenters made themselves available and assisted with sourcing information to complete the various modules. The drinks evening was held in an awesome venue with beautiful catering and was most enjoyable. It was simple and elegant and provided the opportunity to connect and talk to people that one would otherwise not have the opportunity to meet. I thought it was very gracious of the College Fellows and Members to make the effort to attend the evening. David Manton's presentation was extremely worthwhile being more about the philosophy and approach of good dentistry, as opposed to science and clinical facts. Of course, we have to know the science, but I think one of the struggles and failings of our profession is communication, respect, and truly caring for our patients. If we could all just remember this, then we'd all be doing a better job. 19 C COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 03 2016 OLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 03 2016 19

RACDS FOUNDATION The RACDS Foundation was established over two decades ago to promote scientific and academic projects associated with the College. Funding has been available for many years to promote rural based candidates for the Final Examinations in the FRACDS (GDP). Although the vast majority of candidates are working and living close to major Australasian cities or abroad, some Australasian candidates reside in remote regions and thus incur an extra financial burden in travelling to a Final Examination centre. The Foundation welcomes applications for financial assistance from such RACDS candidates. If you believe you may qualify for this grant, please contact the College CEO, Mr Stephen Robbins [email protected] who can assist you with further details. Dr Ross Bastiaan Chair, RACDS Foundation DENTAL BOARD OF AUSTRALIA The College supports the Dental Board of Australia’s (DBA’s) campaign to increase awareness on infection prevention and control. A video made for patients can be viewed on the DBA’s website, www.dentalboard.gov.au and serves as a reminder to the registered dental practitioner of their infection control obligations.
