The Annual General Meeting accepted the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting held on 24 November 2017 as a true and accurate record. The meeting also received the Annual and Financial Report for year ending 30 June 2018, the President’s and Chief Executive Officer’s Report. Dr Sivabalan Vasudavan, Chair The formal activities commenced in March with a New Fellows and Members Welcome function, which was held at the Drs Peter Gregory and Sivabalan Vasudavan luxurious surrounds of the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. We were able to duly acknowledge the efforts of Dr Annabelle Dr John Watson Shalders, the recipient of the 2018 KJ Sutherland Prize awarded to the candidate who scored the highest marks in Part 1 General Drs Janina Christoforou and John McGeachie Dentistry of the Final Examination. Moreover, this enjoyable event provided an opportunity to welcome several new Fellows and Members to our region. The social interaction from various generations and diaspora highlighted the important role which the RACDS holds in bringing together the past, present and future leaders of the dental profession. The Annual RACDS Scientific Day held in June was universally heralded as a resounding success, with the meeting over- subscribed with 212 registered delegates. The program was titled, Kids’ Teeth, Kids’ Trauma and the Tortuous Journey of a New Kids’ Hospital and featured paediatric dentist, Prof Monty Duggal from the University of Singapore as the keynote speaker. Prof Duggal certainly educated and entertained us with his profound knowledge and insights from the fields of dental traumatology and paediatric dentistry. Prof Duggal was very well supported by our local speakers, Drs Peter Ricciardo, Chris Wholley, and John Winters, all of whom contributed excellent lecture presentations that resonated with all delegates in attendance. I would like to formally acknowledge the exemplary vision and foresight of our College President, Dr Patrick Russo, and acknowledge the generous support of the College in assisting with the attendance of the UWA Final Year DMD Student cohort at our Scientific Day to learn and experience first-hand the many benefits of becoming a Fellow and/or Member of the College. The Australian Dental Student Association Annual Student Convention convened in Perth in July. The College was well represented with presentations by Drs Andrew Bochenek, Janina Christoforou, Amanda Phoon Nguyen, Raymond Lam, John Watson, and Peter Gregory. The Regional Committee once again hosted a Candidates Advisory Function in August, and a number of our members including Drs Andrew Bochenek, Janina Christoforou, Ahmed Saleh and John Watson graciously availed themselves to provide examination and viva preparation support for our Primary and Finals Examination candidates. Our steadfast commitment to providing exceptional continuing professional education to our region will continue in 2019. Prof M. Thank you to all our members of the NZ Regional Committee who have put their time and energy into supporting our NZ Fellows and Members. A special mention should be given to the work of Dr Lara Friedlander has done for the NZ Committee and for the wider RACDS community. The whole Committee would like her acknowledged for all the work she does. In October we had our Annual Study Day in Wellington. We had a variety of lectures by a series of fellows and invited guests which was attended by approximately 30 Fellows, Members and candidates. We also had our Annual Meeting where we were able to set some goals for the committee to follow over the next couple of years. There is momentum coming from our younger members which is wonderful for the more senior members of our NZ College community. A large number of NZ Fellows and Members attended Convocation where they attended the social functions and Education Days, provided education through lectures and masterclasses and compete in the Young Lecturer award. The sense of camaraderie, friendship and shared dental values was evident throughout Convocation with the NZ contingent and the wider College community. As of November 2018, we have two members from NZ on the College Council- Dr Hugh Trengrove and Dr Erin Mahoney. We also have a number of NZ Fellows and Members who have helped on Committees and as Examiners which continues to allow the College to provide high quality services. 24th RACDS Convocation The 24th Convocation of RACDS was held at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide, South Australia, from Thursday 20– Sunday 23 September, 2018. Paired with 3rd Joint Collegiate Scientific Meeting, colleagues from the College of Dental Surgeons Hong Kong and the College of Dental Surgeons of Singapore were particularly welcomed. The College President, Dr Patrick Russo warmly welcomed official guests including His Excellency, the Governor of South Australia, the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Fellows, Members and inductees and their partners to the Adelaide Town Hall for the Opening Ceremony. The 63 inductees were congratulated for achieving Fellowship or Membership in both general and specialist dental practice. Their achievements in becoming leading professionals in their fields were acknowledged as they were formally admitted to the College as Fellows or Members. His Excellency, the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC officially opened the 24th Convocation by welcoming guests to the Adelaide, the City of Churches. The new inductees and those who have completed specialist accreditation were congratulated and commended for their passion, skill and dedication to the dental profession. His Excellency spoke of the importance of good dental His Excellency, the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC health for our wellbeing, quality of life, and how we Prof Scarfe, Dr Karen Luxford (CEO) and A/Prof Gallucci feel about ourselves and how others see us. He was Prof Steve Wesselingh particularly interested in the theme, Digital Dentistry, noting that ‘Technology has great potential to further enhance diagnostic tools, record keeping and share cutting-edge information’. Convocation Theme The theme of the Scientific Program was Digital Dentistry: The Era of the Virtual Patient. The conference explored the fundamental issues posed by the ability to create a digital virtual patient, at an individual patient and society level. The impact of digital data throughout the stages of patient care from pre-natal care through to the very elderly patients was presented by world- class and local professionals. The keynote speakers were Prof Bill Scarfe and A/Prof German Gallucci, both hailing from the United States. Prof Scarfe, originally from Adelaide and now based at the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre, USA, is considered a leading authority on Imaging Technology. He has contributed to recent consensus statements on general and specific use guidelines and discipline specific applications of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). A/Prof Gallucci is the Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences, and the Head of the Division of Regenerative and Implant Sciences at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He actively participates in clinical research related to implant-prosthodontics and Digital Dentistry. His work has been published in International peer-reviewed journals and he is a member of the editorial board for several scientific dental journals. 18th Robert Harris Oration The 18th Robert Harris Oration at the Opening Ceremony was delivered by Prof Steve Wesselingh, Executive Director of South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Prof Wesselingh delivered a thought provoking oration on Health Reform in Australia, outlining the need for better, more accessible, equitable and affordable healthcare. Animal keepers showed guests a range of Australian native animals including a bilby and a blue-tongued lizard. Vale The College Remembers... Dr William James Mackie 18 February 1937 – 22 December 2018 Dr Jim Mackie, a well known and highly respected Orthodontist, passed away on 22 December 2018 after a long illness. Jim was an Inaugural Fellow of the College and served as the Honorary Secretary of the NSW Organising Committee from 1967- 1968 in the College’s formative years. Dr Jiko Fatafehi Luveni 1946 - 22 December 2018 It is with great sadness that the College learned of the passing of Dr Jiko Luveni from Fiji. In November 2017 Dr Luveni was awarded RACDS Fellowship (without Examination) for outstanding services to dentistry and the wellbeing of the people of Fiji by establishing outreach and community engagement programmes. Dr Edmund Kai Kin Chau 6 December 1940 - 23 October 2018 Dr Edmund Kai Kin Chau was well known and respected in Australia and Hong Kong. He passed away on 23 October 2018 in Hong Kong. He is survived by his wife, Katherine and two sons. Dr Chau was among the first candidates to be awarded the FRACDS, Diploma of Oral Surgery (DOS) by examination, the forerunner of the specialist OMS qualification.
