Welcome to another issue of the College News! As many will know, we sadly bid farewell to Dr Karen Luxford in July 2019. Many achievements have been made during the past 2 years, which are a testament to her able influence. We wish her all the best for her new position. We are fortunate to welcome Mr Brendan Peek, the College’s incoming CEO, and I am sure we will be hearing from him shortly. I look forward to his leadership of this fantastic College community and have no doubt he will continue to lead the College to greater heights. Since the last issue, Australia celebrated National Volunteer Week from 20 to 26 May. I was lucky enough to be made aware of some of the volunteering efforts undertaken by my fellow colleagues and dental organizations, in both dental and non- dental settings, and it filled me with such pride to be part of a generous, warm community. The theme of the Volunteer week was making a world of difference, and this year especially, I could tangibly feel it. To all the RACDS members who volunteered, have volunteered and will volunteer, thank you! In this issue, we are fortunate enough to feature some of our members who do just that. I have no doubt there are many more. If you are so inclined, please feel free to email me your stories as I would love to hear about it. Now that I am post-exams, I linger in a blissful place and am starting to feel human again! As in all things in life, balance is of paramount importance and I am looking to achieve a better work-life harmony. I would love to know, what are some non-work-related hobbies or activities our members engage in. And as always, please feel free to contact myself or Maryann Walsh, maryann.walsh@racds. org with any ideas or suggestions for future issues of the College News. Thank you and untill next time! Perhaps with basic equipment in rural Vietnam his most rewarding voluntary contribution has been his involvement with A/Prof John Boucher AM working with Dr Jamie Robertson AM, a Fellow of RACDS, and his Rotary Australia- Fellow Prof Martin Tyas AM in rural Vietnam Dental Health Project. Jamie has been leading this project since Vietnam 1991 which provides primary dental care for school age children in rural Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen fundraising Vietnam, dental specialty teaching at institutions in Ho Chi Minh City and for the Perth Children’s Hospital Hanoi, and a multidisciplinary team for orofacial cleft management. Many Foundation Fellows and Members of RACDS have made significant contributions to the project and continue to provide voluntary service. John believes the personal satisfaction gained from volunteering far outweighs the benefits provided to communities he has served. DPhroAomn aNngduayen Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen completed her Oral specialty training in Perth, Western Australia. When she was in high school, she was encouraged by her favorite teacher to start doing volunteer work, and she has not looked back since. She enjoys both dental and non-dental volunteering; providing clinical care for domestic violence victims through the Women in Dentistry Healing Smiles program, volunteering with the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation and organizing events to raise funds for organizations such as the Cancer Council WA. In particular, she loves making children and adults smile by volunteering as the children’s hospital mascot, Stitches the Bear. Knowing that she is helping others by volunteering and making a difference drives her to do so on a regular basis, and she believes the community would not be the same place without volunteers. Volunteering has been more rewarding than she could ever imagine, and she hopes to continue doing so and encouraging others to join in, for a long time to come. Dr AleBxaanrrdartat Dr Alexandra Barratt FRACDS enjoys the opportunity she has to make music with like-minded colleagues and finds it a positive factor in her work-life balance. After completing her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Sydney University, Alexandra's father introduced her to Dr Miklos Pohl OAM, the founder of the Australian Doctors Orchestra. She joined the orchestra and discovered the thrill of making music with fellow like- minded professionals. The Australian Doctors Orchestra (ADO) is a unique fellowship of medical professionals who are also classically trained musicians. The ADO holds concerts annually in both state capitals and regional centres. Members of the orchestra donate their time and fund their own travel, accommodation and subscription fees. All proceeds of their concerts are donated to charity. The pleasure of playing in the ADO inspired Dr Cathy Fraser to found the state orchestra, the NSW Doctors Orchestra know as \"Musicus Medicus\" in 2004. Alexandra has played with Musicus Medicus since then and has made many friendships which have been established via the shared interest in music. Musicus Medicus promotes the philosophy of supporting charities in the Arts and in Medicine. The orchestra has a professional relationship with Sydney Eisteddfod by funding the \"NSW Drs Orchestra Instrumental Scholarship\" for 16-25 year olds, worth $10,500 annually.
