Oral Health Promotion in Vanuatu This article came about following a formal request from Dr Barry Stewart to quote the College’s motto, “Let knowledge conquer disease” in the introduction of his report on the National Oral Health Survey (NOHS), Vanuatu 2017 due for release in October 2018.Dr Barry Stewart National Oral Health Survey of Vanuatu (NOHS) Vanuatu is a South Pacific nation of around 280,000 people, spread overMDSc (Melb), FRACDS 800 kilometres north to south across more than 60 inhabited islands. The inspiration to lead a NOHS in Vanuatu arose following several visits over the past few years as a volunteer dentist with Medical Sailing Ministries (MSM) http://msm.org.au/ and the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu (PCV) Health http://pcvhealth.org/ beginning with the first visit in June 2013. The survey, based on World Health Organisation (WHO) methodology (Oral Health Surveys, Basic Methods, Fifth Edition, 2013), was undertaken by trained volunteers, including dentists, dental therapists, dental nurses, and many other supporters from Australia, Vanuatu, and NZ. The findings from the survey are currently undergoing statistical analysis prior to the NOHS Report, including recommendations, being submitted to the Vanuatu Ministry of Health to assist in formulating a National Oral Health Policy. Noticeable observations from the survey were a high caries prevalence, especially in young children in urban areas, and high visible plaque and gingival bleeding across all survey age groups throughout the archipelago.Onboard the 53 foot yacht, Chimere, with Dr Given that dental plaque plays a significant role in theSamual Alex (left), and PCV Health workers, Bob aetiology of both major oral diseases, the “Gudfala Tut Skul(right), Morinda and Dick Projek” (i.e.,“Healthy Teeth School Project\") was introduced18 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 02 20188

For more information on these studies, readers are invited to visit the MSM and PCV Health websites or contact Dr Barry Stewart at: [email protected] a trial basis at Central School in Port Vila extending Grade 1 children at Vila Central SchoolApril to August 2017. Children in Grades 1, 6 and 9 enthusiastically brushing prior to formal class(corresponding to three of the WHO age groups room activitiesincluded in oral health surveys) were included in anoral health trial with two main objectives:1. Introduce a supervised tooth brushing program on a trial basis.2. Gauge response to a trial fluoride toothpaste formulated from local ingredients of around 70% by weight of cold-pressed coconut oil and calcium carbonate. The trial toothpaste was available in three flavours.Supervised Brushing Trial - Results to DateThere was a statistically significant reduction inplaque scores between weeks 1 and 2 of the trial, andoverwhelming acceptance of all three flavours of thefluoride toothpaste by the children and over 40 adults, who sampled the toothpaste at the local market.Plaque and bleeding scores will be re-evaluated at theend of the trial in July.Coconut oil and profuse amounts of dead coral(essentially calcium carbonate) are found on manybeaches in Vanuatu. These materials are currentlyundergoing testing as potential resources for localproduction of toothpaste. The vision of these studies, together with the manufacture of tooth brushes fromlocal bamboo, is to use local materials and profitsfrom sales of these oral health products to offer self-sustainable tooth brushing programs in all schoolsthroughout Vanuatu. Young DentistsORIENTATION COURSE REVIEW - ALEX KHOMINSKYThe 2018 Orientation Course was attended by 100 candidates and by all accounts was hugely successful. Below is areport from Dr Alex Khominsky, a candidate attending the 2018 July RACDS Orientation Course for Primary Examination. What an intense, interactive and stimulating fortnight! In retrospect, I don’t think anyone who attended the Orientation Course for Primary Examinations could have imaginedthe journey that they were about to embark upon. For most, it has motivated and sharpened our minds to undertake thePrimary Examinations this year or next, and for a few, it may have scared them away, but I think I can speak for all, the coursemade us acutely aware of our deficiencies in knowledge!Held in the newly constructed Sibyl Centre of the Women’s College at Sydney University, approximately 100 young (of heartat the very least) dentists came together to listen, learn and interact with some of the best in the profession. Returning to thecore of any health profession, we started the process of re-engaging with the sciences that are the underlying foundationof all clinical dentistry. Over the two weeks, we covered Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Histology, Pathology,Microbiology and Anatomy to various depths of knowledge, and most importantly, with a completely new perspective ofhow to approach understanding and appreciating the importance of these topics. The course encompassed a smorgasbord of dentists from all parts of Australia and New Zealand, Hong Kong and furtherabroad in the Asia-Pacific region. It was amazing to hear the different stories and dental journeys that brought us heretogether, from those hoping to challenge themselves and broaden their horizons, to those already on their path tomaxillofacial surgery and seeking to be part of the solution for health injustices in the Indigenous population, to those ontheir path towards specialisations, and to those with the buddying tendencies for research and considering PhDs. Anotherexperience of the course, that transcended all nationalities and backgrounds as dentists, was how incredible it was to havetwo weeks of regular morning and afternoon teas and lunches (many thanks to the catering staff for feeding our bruisedand battered minds).Personally, the Orientation Course and the Primary Exam seemed a logical step after completing my undergraduate dentistryand research at the University of Adelaide in 2017. A RACDS Fellowship for me represents not only a commitment to learningand education, but also a commitment to not becoming complacent and applying new-found knowledge in order to benefitpatients. My clinical and research interests currently lie in the areas of Periodontics, Special Needs and Oral Medicine, andin the future, I hope to gain more experience in these fields and find a balance between the clinical, research and academia. Many thanks to Charlotte Anneveld and to the incredible minds and personalities of presenters and lecturers.Returning to Melbourne, I am very thankful to have had the privilege to have learnt from such high calibre educators, andalso been able to meet, socialise and create what I hope to be life-long friendships from others in the profession.Orientation Course at the newly refurbished Women’s College Denny Luo, Elizabeth Land, Ashoka Lathif andat Sydney University Alex Khominsky (author)22 COLLEGE NEWS ISSUE 02 2018

Young DentistsAUSTRALIAN DENTAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION The Australian Dental Student’s Association held their Convention in Perth, Western Australia from 1 – 7 July 2018. Through its sponsorship and engagement, the College was able to speak to many dental students about the possibilities for career progression and additional academic achievement beyond University. It was fantastic to see many prospective Fellows and Members already thinking about striving for excellence after graduation. Dr Janina Christoforou co-ordinated a successful ‘Mock viva voce’ Workshop on Tuesday 2 July 2018 which gave approximately 40 final-year students valuable insight into the RACDS Primary Examinations, and what to expect in a viva voce style exam. Positive feedback was received about this workshop and we would like to thank the facilitators for volunteering their valuable time – Dr Janina Christoforou, Dr May Lam, A/Prof Peter Mack, Dr Jennifer Martins, Dr Amanda Phoon, Dr Hamish Mackie and Dr John McGeachie. Dr Raymond Lam, previous Chair of the WA Regional Committee, presented at the Career Development Evening on Tuesday 2 July with a personal account of his journey to Fellowship. The thoughtful presentation was engaging and provided the audience with insight into the personal benefits of becoming a Fellow, in addition to academic achievement. Finally, the Tradeshow on Wednesday 3 July provided a great opportunity for Drs John Watson, Peter Gregory and Ms Rachel Introna to answer questions about pathways to Membership and Fellowship and give away advertising and merchandise materials. The enthusiasm and interest from students was encouraging to see. The RACDS would like to thank the WA Regional Committee and Dr Peter Gregory for assisting with the ADSA Convention.
