Before undertaking specialist training, Amanda graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Dental Science degree, served in the Royal Australian Navy as a Dental Officer and worked in both public and private practice in Western Australia. Amanda completed her Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (General Stream) in 2016 and serves as a mentor in the MRACDS program and is a member of the WA Regional Committee. Amanda is keen on connecting with Fellows/Members of the College and welcomes all to contact her with any ideas, suggestions or interesting work that would make engaging reading for the membership. Councillor Profiles 2018 - 2020 Prof Laurence Walsh AO Councillor Laurie is a professor at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry, where he is the discipline lead for special needs dentistry. He has been the chief examiner in Microbiology for the RACDS primary since 1999. He was the head of the UQ Dental School from 2004-2013, and served 18 years on ADAQ Council and 5 years on ADAQ Executive before becoming ADA Qld state branch president in 2018. Laurie serves on AHPRA professional standards panels, and he represents dentistry on several committees of Standards Australia. Laurie was elected to Council in 2018. Dr Susan Wise Councillor Susan is the Immediate Past-President of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB). Susan was first elected on the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) Council in 2010. Susan is a specialist periodontist in suburban Melbourne and has a passion for oral health. Susan was on the ADAVB Oral Health Committee for 12 years including chairing this committee for 4 years. NZDA CONFERENCEThe President and CEO attended the NZDA Conference in Auckland from 16 – 18 August 2018. It was a great opportunity tomeet up with local NZ College members including Chair of the NZ Regional Committee, Dr Erin Mahoney and Councillor,Dr Hugh Trengrove MNZM and several others. An informal luncheon was held at Gusto Restaurant with 16 Fellows andMembers in attendance, all enjoying great food and short presentations by Patrick and Erin..There was also the opportunity to meet with the President and CEO’s of key New Zealand organisations which were veryproductive. NSW/ACT PRIMARY TUTORIALSTo assist the Primary Examination candidates, the NSW/ACT Regional Committee held tutorials over the weekend of 13 and14 October. Registrants had the opportunity to attend either in person or log-in and attend online.There were a total of 28 candidates: 7 who attend in person and 21 from areas as diverse as the Northern Territory, NewZealand, Tasmania, Fiji and Hong Kong.Not only were the candidates logging in to the tutorials, but several of the presenters, including Winthrop Prof Marc Tennantalso logged in to present to the group. 24th Convocation The 24th Convocation, and 3rd Joint Collegiate Scientific Meeting (RACDS, CDSS and CDSHK) was held at the Adelaide Town Hall Thursday 20th September and Hilton Hotel Friday 21 September to Sunday 23 September 2018. The biennial event was well-attended by RACDS Fellows, Members and Candidates from across the Australasian region. A Stand-out Scientific Program The Scientific Program was held from Friday – Sunday with 22 speakers and Masterclass facilitators presenting lectures and workshops across a broad spectrum of disciplines. ValeThe College Remembers... Dr Edmund Kai Kin Chau 6 December 1940 - 23 October 2018Dr Edmund Kai Kin Chau was well known and respected in Australia and Hong Kong. Sadly, he passedaway on 23 October 2018 in Hong Kong. He is survived by his wife, Katherine and two sons.According to College President, Dr Paul Sambrook, Dr Chau was among the first candidates to beawarded the FRACDS, Diploma of Oral Surgery (DOS) by examination, the forerunner of the specialistOMS qualification.Dr Chau graduated at the University of Adelaide in 1964 and became a Fellow of the College in 1966. Hewas the Senior Lecturer at the Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology, University of Adelaide from1972 – 1980 whilst holding the honorary post of Visiting Oral Surgeon and later Senior Visiting OralSurgeon to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.Later, Dr Chau returned to Hong Kong and worked in various positions at the University of Hong Kongincluding in the Department of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine, up until the time of his passing.Thank you to Mrs Katherine Chau who shared this photo of her husband, saying that ‘his days in Australiawere some of his proudest and happiest’.
