Second Sunday after Pentecost Order of Service Praise & Worship Call to Worship One: We praise You! God of Abraham and Sarah, James and John, Mary and Martha -- All: You use ordinary people like them and like us to do extraordi- nary things. One: We praise You! God of John Wesley, who turns our streets into sanctuaries. All: The promises of God are coming true, that’s why He’s sending me and sending you into the fields. One: The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few, so You, the God of Mother Teresa, do not wait for the sick and the helpless to come to you. You take Your healing to those in need. All: Indeed, the promises of God are coming true! That’s why He’s sending me and sending you to help and heal, to serve and save. One: We praise You! O God of laughing disciples – You keep your promises, even when we struggle to keep our faith. All: Though we may laugh like Sarah, bless us to serve like you – be- cause the promises of God are coming true! Amen. Praise & Worship First Report Prayer
Offertory Prayer Living God, you are the Lord of all! Thank you for sending your Spirit to bring us new life. We are grateful that you are continually at work in our lives and the world to fulfill your promises. Let your Holy Spirit revive our spirit of giving. May our giving today show our trust in You, and our desire to join You at work in the world. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen. The Spoken Word “Laughter Is Good for the Soul” Matthew 9:35-10:8 and Genesis 18:1-15 Pastor Eleanor Colvin The Invitation to Christian Discipleship “Go forth empowered by Christ’s light to serve like Christ.”
Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Genesis 18:10-11 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. (NIV) Genesis 18:14 “Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (NIV) Genesis 21:1 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. (NIV) Matthew 9:35-36 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teach- ing in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (NIV) Matthew 10:1 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sick- ness. (NIV)
Sermon Notes Key Questions: 1. When the world is full of chaos, it can be hard to focus on the promises of God. And yet, it’s necessary. What promises do you need to promote over your problems? 2. What might make you laugh at God’s promises as Sarah did? 3. Matthew 9:36 tells us Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion, because they were “harassed and helpless,” like sheep without a shepherd. Who might capture Jesus’ heart and compassion in our society now? What folks seem harassed and helpless? 4. Immediately after Jesus sees the needs of people, he begins sending his disciples out. How are you being sent in the world to heal, cleanse, raise and drive out?
