Offertory Prayer Living God, you are the Lord of all! Thank you for sending your Spirit to bring us new life. We are grateful that you are continually at work in our lives and the world to fulfill your promises. Let your Holy Spirit revive our spirit of giving. May our giving today show our trust in You, and our desire to join You at work in the world. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen. The Spoken Word “Is Your Soil As Good As the Seed?” Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 Pastor Eleanor Colvin The Invitation to Christian Discipleship “Go forth empowered by Christ’s light to serve like Christ.”
Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Psalm 119:105 (NIV) - Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Matthew 13:19 (NIV) - When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatch- es away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. Matthew 13:20-21 (NIV) - The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Matthew 13:22 (NIV) - The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. Matthew 13:23 (NIV) - But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
Sermon Notes Key Questions: 1. Sometimes we’re good soil and sometimes we’re not. Which of the scenarios in the parable describes your faith journey when you’re struggling to bear fruit? 2. Verse 23 draws a direct link between hearing and understanding the word and how fruitful we are as disciples. What fruit are you harvest- ing as a result of learning God’s word? Do you think God is satisfied with your yield? 3. What can you do to ensure your soil is good and stays good?
