Call to Worship One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come. All: Jesus is the light of the world! One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come to overcome the darkness of the world. All: On this first Sunday of 2022, we vow to walk in the light, the beautiful light of Jesus. One: Arise! Shine! Our light has come to guide our feet, while we run this race. All: Just as the bright star guided the Wise Men, we pray that Jesus lights our way – each and every day. Amen!

The Spoken Word “2022: The Year of Open Eyes and Open Hearts” Isaiah 60:1-2 and Matthew 2:1-12 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Isaiah 60:1-2 — Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you! See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Matthew 2:2 — “...Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:10-11 — When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Zephaniah 3:20 — At that time, I will gather you; at that time, I will bring you home. I will give you honor and praise among all the peoples of the earth when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes.

Key Questions: 1. Isaiah reminds us that even in a new year, some of the darkness and chaos of the last year linger. Even amid the world’s darkness, can you see the glory of the Lord rising? What does it look like for the Lord’s light to shine upon you in this season? 2.What treasures will you present to the Lord in 2022? What gifts will you share with God and neighbor this year? 3. Are your eyes open? Have you seen “the star”? When the Wise Men saw the star, it stopped them in their tracks and re- routed their journey. Here’s What’s Happening at 1st Church -January 5: Bible Study — All are welcome to participate in annual community Bible Study at the Lincoln Recreation Center. Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ZOOM information will be made available. -January 5: MLK Contest Deadline — Art and essays will be due for youth and children (K-12) who are entering the annual contest honoring Dr. King, that is sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the Brazos Valley African American Museum.
