Order of Service Praise & Worship Call to Worship One: Come, let’s worship! All: In worship, our God is sowing seeds of faith, of hope and of love. May our hearts receive! One: Come, let’s worship! All: In worship, our God is planting peace and prosperity. May our hearts receive! One: Come, let’s worship our God, who is able to take the tiniest seed and bless it to become the greatest tree. All: May the word of God water and increase our Mustard Seed faith today. One: May the word of God take root in our lives, so that we might bear fruit that glorifies our Creator. All: Lord, bless our worship and discipleship to help Your kingdom come on Earth as it is in heaven. May it be so. Amen. Praise & Worship First Report Prayer
Offertory Prayer Living God, you are the Lord of all! Thank you for sending your Spirit to bring us new life. We are grateful that you are continually at work in our lives and the world to fulfill your promises. Let your Holy Spirit revive our spirit of giving. May our giving today show our trust in You, and our desire to join You at work in the world. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen. The Spoken Word “The Kingdom of Heaven is Like …” Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 Pastor Eleanor Colvin The Invitation to Christian Discipleship “Go forth empowered by Christ’s light to serve like Christ.”
Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Matthew 13:31-32 (NIV) - He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Matthew 13:33 (NIV) - He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” Matthew 13:45 (NIV) - Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. Romans 8:28-29 (NIV) - And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Sermon Notes Key Questions: 1. How would you explain the kingdom of heaven to someone who is new to the faith or growing in faith? 2. The image of the mustard seed is probably the most popular among the images Jesus offered to describe the kingdom of heaven in this parable. Which of the other images captures your spiritual imagina- tion? (Some of the other ideas were yeast spreading through dough, a treasure hidden in a field, a net let down to receive a great catch, etc.) 3. What might God be trying to accomplish through your mustard seed faith? What spaces have you been planted in? For what purpose?
