Call to Worship One: And this is how we know what love is…. All: God so loved the world that he gave his only son for us. One: God gave his son to teach us – All: How to live and how to love. One: God gave his son to reach us – All: When we were sinking deep in sin. When we were thinking our ways were better than God’s ways. One: On this Sixth Sunday of Lent, we celebrate the soon-coming King. We cry out: Hosanna! All: Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed are we who serve him. Amen.
The Spoken Word “The Road to Resurrection” Mark 11:1-11 Pastor Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures: Mark 11:1-3 – As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it…’” Mark 11:7-8 – When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Mark 11:9 – Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Luke 22:26-27 – Instead, the greatest among you shall be like the youngest, and the one who rules, like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. Isaiah 50:7 – Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame. Key Questions: 1.The people cried out: “Hosanna!” which means “Save us! Save now!” What do you need help with today? From what situations, circumstances, problems or feelings are you asking the Lord to deliver you? 2.As you continue to journey toward the cross, what do you need to lay down at the feet of Jesus as he passes by today? 3. Are you ready to walk the road to resurrection? Are you able to stay faithful through suffering and betrayal? Are you able to stay faithful –and not cause Christ suffering because of your betrayal?
