50 Days of Easter May 8, 2022 First United Methodist Church 1125 Wellborn Road, College Station, TX 77840 Rev. Eleanor Colvin, Pastor (979) 690-8415 Website: 1stCollegeStation.org

Call to Worship One: Christ the Lord is Risen! All: The Lord is risen indeed! One: The Risen Lord is at work in us and in the world. All: Calling us to be disciples. Calling us to make disciples. One: The Good News is that Christ lived, died and rose again with us in mind. All: It’s our mission to share that message at all Times. One: The Good News is, with Christ, there is forgiveness of sins and fullness of life. All: What a testimony we have! God bless us as we get to work sharing Your Good News! Amen!

The Spoken Word “A Life That Testifies” Acts 9:36-43 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Acts 9:36-37 – Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Acts 9:38-39 – Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Acts 9:40-42 — Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. John 9:4 — We must do the works of the One who sent us while it is day. Because when night comes — no one can work.

Key Questions: 1. Tabitha was described as one who was always doing good and helping the poor. What is your one-sentence discipleship description? What might folks say about your life of service? 2. This is the only New Testament text that names a woman as a disciple. What are the things from your life story that society might say “count you out” as a disciple? What parts of your story does God hope to use to bless others? 3. Does your life testify? What do your character, faithfulness and good works say even when you aren’t around to speak? 4. Tabitha’s body had been washed, but not anointed for burial. This means they weren’t planning to bury her that day, because they were fully confident that she would be raised. Do you believe in the Resurrection for your own life’s situations? _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
