Call to Worship One: This is the day the Lord has made! All: We will rejoice! We are glad! One: This is the day the Lord has made — a perfect day to preach the Gospel and to live the Gospel! All: Lord, we are striving for perfection! Lord, we are pressing toward the mark of the high calling! One: And what is our calling? All: To love the Lord with all our heart, all our mind, all our soul and all our strength! One: Is that all? All: No! We are called to love our neighbors as we love ourselves! One: Children of God — let’s get to work! All: With our worship and service, in our giving and living, we praise God and press on for perfection! Amen and Amen!

The Spoken Word “Timber!” Philippians 3:12-14 and Haggai 1:2-14 Rev. Eleanor L. Colvin Sermon Notes Key Scriptures:   Haggai 1:2-4 — This is what the Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.’” Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” Haggai 1:7-8 — This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord. Haggai 1:13-14 — Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord. So, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God.

Philippians 3:12 — Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Philippians 3:13-14 — Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Key Questions: 1.What grabs your attention (energy, time, money) when it comes time for you to focus on the Lord’s work? 2.What are the gifts — the timber — with which God has blessed you for the building of the kingdom? Are you building with them to your full potential? 3.When the Spirit was stirred up among the remnant, they came together and started working on God’s house. What is the evidence that the Spirit is moving among us? What’s being stirred up? What are we working on? 4. In pre-industrial times, timber was moved from wooded areas by the power of the river. Occasionally, there would be “logjams.” Have you experienced a spiritual logjam? A time when you desired to use your gifts, but felt stuck? _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________
